Yesterday morning I was having breakfast in the 37th floor club lounge(休息室) at the InterContinental Bangkok, quite enjoying my conversation with Julia. She is a lovely Bavarian lady who works in the club lounge. Suddenly I felt really dizzy(晕眩的). I hadn't drunk anything the night before and had got a great night of sleep, so I found that a bit strange. But it continued. After a few moments I realized what was going on -- I wasn't dizzy, but it was an earthquake. For over 20 seconds the club floor was shaking.
Julia tried to remain calm and asked us to go down the stairs. When I walked past the rooftop pool, I saw water rushing out of it, which terrified me even more. I skipped down the 37 flights of stairs as if I were taking part in the Olympics.
However, as I was trying to get to the ground floor, I found it strange that nobody else was escaping. Eventually I made it to the ground floor. Again, I had never been in an earthquake before, so I had no sense of what it was like during an earthquake. I was kind of expecting disorder on the streets, a thousand people in the hall, and a general Armageddon style setting.
Sure enough I hurriedly got through the doors on the first floor and went straight to the reception desk, thinking the girl at the desk knew what was going on. But she looked quite confused, not knowing what I was talking about. Then I asked another one but I got the same response. I believed the world was coming to an end, while everyone looked at me as if nothing had happened.
Well, as it turned out, nothing did happen to them. Clearly there was an earthquake in Myanmar, and it was only felt at the top of some of the taller buildings in Bangkok.
Julia kept the club lounge closed for safety for some time, while I was happy just to be on the ground level.

A.Because no one was running.
B.Because the author looked strange.
C.Because she didn't feel any shaking at all.
D.Because she didn't speak the author's language.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.A joke others played on the author.
B.How the author survived an earthquake.
C.The author's most unforgettable experience.

If you want to take good care of your eyes and vision, I encourage you to adopt the habit of blinking (眨眼) softly as often as possible. Frequent and gentle blinking is important to maintain healthy eyes and good vision because it helps to keep your eyes coated with three beneficial layers (层) of tears.
The first layer of tears lies right up against the whites of your eyes, and provides an even coat of protein-rich moisture (水分) for the second layer to stick to. The middle watery layer helps to wash away foreign dust. It also provides your eyes with minerals, a variety of proteins, and moisture. The third outer layer of tears is somewhat oily. It serves to prevent the middle watery layer from drying quickly, and smooths your eyes.
If your eyes are not regularly coated with the three layers of tears described above, they will be short of moisture and cleaning, and they will be unnecessarily tired.
One of the reasons why many of us don’t blink as often as we should is that we don’t see frequent blinking in mainstream media. Actors and news presenters are typically trained to blink as infrequently as possible, so when we take in most forms of media, our minds learn that it isn’t normal to blink frequently.
To fully support your eyes and vision, it’s best to blink softly every two to four seconds, which translates to about fifteen to thirty blinks per minute. By making an effort to softly blink at this rate, over time, your body will turn your efforts into a habit. If you’re thinking that such frequent blinking will make reading a book or viewing a movie uncomfortable, give it a try and you’ll see right away that it doesn’t take away from these experiences at all.
28.What does the author suggest in the text
A.Taking good care of our eyes by eye exercises.
B.Closing and opening our eyes frequently and gently.
C.Maintaining healthy eyes to prevent nearsightedness.
D.Crying as often as possible to gain three layers of tears.
29.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.The classification of tears.
B.The causes of three layers of tears.
C.The functions of three layers of tears.
D.The importance of the first layer of tears.
30.How does the author think of blinking frequently when reading
A.Annoying. B.Disagreeable. C.Stupid. D.Harmless.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Keep Eyes Coated with as Many Layers of Tears as Possible
B.Try Frequent Blinking for Healthier Eyes and Better Vision
C.Actors and News Presenters Set Us a Bad Example in Lifestyle
D.Blinking Lowers the Experiences When Reading or Seeing a Film
Recently, a case of lifeboat ethics occurred. On Aug. 4, Graham and Sheryl Anley, while boating off the coast of South Africa, hit a rock. As the boat threatened to sink, the husband got off, but his wife was trapped in the boat. Instead of freeing his wife and getting her to shore, Graham grabbed Rosie, their pet dog. With Rosie safe and sound, Graham returned for Sheryl. All are doing fine.
It’s great story, but it doesn’t strike me as especially newsworthy. News is supposed to be about something fairly unique, and recent research suggests that, in the right circumstances, lots of people also would have grabbed their Rosie first.
We have strange relationships with our pets. We look after our pets with great love and better health care than billions of people receive. We speak to pets with the same high-pitched voices that we use for babies. As an extreme example of our feelings about pets, the Nazis had strict laws that guaranteed the kind treatment of the pets of Jews being shipped to death camps.
A recent paper by George Regents University demonstrates this human involvement with pets to an astonishing extent. Participants in the study were told a situation in which a bus is out o control, bearing down on a dog and a human. Which do you save With responses from more than 500 people, the answer was that it depended: What kind of human and what kind of dog
Everyone would save a brother, grandparent or close friend rather than a strange dog. But when people considered their own dog VS people less connected with them -- a distant cousin or a hometown stranger -- votes a favor of saving the dog came rolling in. And an astonishing 40% of respondents, including 46% of women, voted to save their dog over a foreign tourist.
What does a finding like this mean First, it is that your odds aren’t so good if you find yourself in another country with a bus bearing down on you and a cute dog. But it also points to something deeper: our unprecedented attitude toward animals, which got its start with the birth of kind - hearted societies in the 19th century.
We prison people who abuse animals, put ourselves in harm’s way in boats between whales an whalers and show sympathy to Bambi and his mother. We can extend sympathy to an animal and feel its pain like no other species. But let’s not be too proud of ourselves. As this study and too much of our history show, we’re pretty selective about how we extend our kindness to other human beings.
32.Which of the following is true according to the article
A.The story of the Anleys and their dog was too unique to be newsworthy.
B.Most people surveyed choose to save their own dog rather than a human.
C.It wa in the 19th century that human beings started to love their pets.
D.Human beings are more and more concerned with animals nowadays.
33.What is the function of the first of paragraph
A.To create a relaxing mood for readers.
B.To present the theme of this essay straightly.
C.To lead in the main topic of this essay.
D.To raise problems that will be solved later.
34.The author mentions Nazi laws in the third paragraph ________.
A.to show how cruel the Nazis’ were to the Jews
B.as an example to persuade people not to love pets
C.to illustrate the strange relationship between human and pets
D.as an example to display the kindness of the Nazis
35.What does the author mainly argue for
A.Pets are of great significance to us human beings.
B.We should rethink about out attitude towards animals and mankind.
C.It is kind of human beings to extend kindness to animals.
D.We should be selective when showing attitude toward other human beings.

I had just poured my second cup of tea that morning and sat down to read the paper. From somewhere, an inner voice said, “Go see Jeff and bring him the chair to repair. Go right now.”
It was such a strong need that I hurriedly dressed and carried a dining-room chair to his door. Jeff was a neighbor who had lost his wife a while back, and he sometimes did minor repairs for me because he enjoyed working with his hands.
I knocked on his door and waited a while. I was about to walk away when he answered. He looked like he was far away in his thoughts. I felt awkward about upsetting him so early. I greeted him and then asked if he could repair my chair. He invited me inside. We sat in his living room. He looked very sad and not his usual self. He said he had had a stroke recently, and while he was home now, he still needed to attend physical treatment. He had to build his strength back up. I apologized for the chair and told him I would just bring it back home. He said to leave it.
We talked for a while. He said that, before I arrived, he was seriously sad. So, my visit stopped his darkness. I listened to how hard it had been since his wife passed and how much worse it was now since the stroke. The longer we talked, the more I saw his mood (情绪)lighten.
After I left his home, I went to the supermarket and gathered ingredients (材料). I made him a hot meal I thought he would like. Carefully, I cut up vegetables and prepared stew (炖菜)for him. I believe it was the best stew I ever made. I made homemade biscuits and prepared fresh fruit for dessert. I realize there might have been healthier food, but I thought a hot meal would lift his spirits. I dropped it off for him. He was glad that someone cared. Emotionally, he seemed in a better place.

M: Today is the third day of my week’s holiday in Paris. The journey here was very long and I felt tired because I didn’t get much sleep on the plane. But I was excited when I got in the taxi and I could see the Eiffel Tower from the window. It really is quite an impressive sight. The weather here is a little bit cold, and sometimes rainy. So I had to buy a new umbrella because I forgot to bring one. The traffic is very bad, so usually I like to walk if I can. But it’s a big city, so it can get very tiring after a few hours. The food here is delicious, but I don’t like the breakfast served at the hotel. However, I am so lucky because there is a nice bakery close to where I am staying. They have fresh bread every morning and the shopkeeper always greets me with a big smile. I have visited most of the famous places, but I couldn’t get into the Louvre, because I went too late last night and the tickets were all sold out. I really hope I can go today, because I’m a big fan of art galleries and I must see the painting of Mona Lisa. It’s the real reason I came here.

根据第二段中“The first layer of tears lies right up against the whites of your eyes, and provides an even coat of protein-rich moisture (水分) for the second layer to stick to.(第一层眼泪正好贴在眼白上,为第二层提供了一层均匀的富含蛋白质的水分)”和“The middle watery layer helps to wash away foreign dust.(中间的水层有助于冲洗掉外来的灰尘)”以及“The third outer layer of tears is somewhat oily. It serves to prevent the middle watery layer from drying quickly, and smooths your eyes.(眼泪的第三层是油性的。它的作用是防止中间的水层快速干燥,并抚平你的眼睛)”可知,第二段是对眼泪的三层作用进行了解释。故选C。
30.
推理判断题。根据最后一段最后一句“If you’re thinking that such frequent blinking will make reading a book or viewing a movie uncomfortable, give it a try and you’ll see right away that it doesn’t take away from these experiences at all.(如果你认为这样频繁的眨眼会让看书或看电影不舒服,那就试一下,你马上就会发现眨眼并没有影响你的阅读体验)”可知,阅读时眨眼睛并不会让你不舒服,也不会影响阅读,它是无害的。故选D。
31.
第一段中“adopt the habit of blinking”讲述的是作者推荐温柔的眨眼睛的习惯有助于自己的眼睛和视力;第二段通过“the first layer of tears”、“the middle watery layer”和“the third outer layer of tears”解释了为什么眨眼睛有助于双眼健康,是因为产生的泪水具有三层护眼功效;第三段和第四段中“one of the reasons why many of us don’t blink as often as we should”和“we take in most forms of media”阐述了为什么很多人认为经常眨眼睛不好的原因即受到大众媒体的欺骗。 Try Frequent Blinking for Healthier Eyes and Better Vision(尝试频繁眨眼,让眼睛更健康,视力更好)适合作本文最佳标题。

根据第三段前三句“We have strange relationships with our pets. We look after our pets with great love and better health care than billions of people receive. We speak to pets with the same high-pitched voices that we use for babies.”
根据第二段“It’s great story, but it doesn’t strike me as especially newsworthy. News is supposed to be about something fairly unique, and recent research suggests that, in the right circumstances, lots of people also would have grabbed their Rosie first.”
根据第三段第一句“We have strange relationships with our pets.” 再根据“As an extreme example of our feelings about pets, the Nazis had strict laws that guaranteed the kind treatment of the pets of Jews being shipped to death camps.”
根据最后一段中“We can extend sympathy to an animal and feel its pain like no other species. But let’s not be too proud of ourselves. As this study and too much of our history show, we’re pretty selective about how we extend our kindness to other human beings.”
