“Ann Matthews, urgent call on Line One,” announced the voice on my telephone speaker.
As a social worker, I knew a 11 response might mean life or death for an abused(受虐待的)child. Jean Smith, my boss, had even come up with a slogan, “Call early – save a child!” So I 12 over a metal wastebasket and quickly picked up the phone.
“…no, thanks, I don’t need a sandwich today,” I said to the sandwich delivery boy on the other end.
I appreciated my secretary Sara’s hard work, 13 her non-emergency “urgent” calls were driving me crazy!
I walked past the switchboard where Sara sat. “I’m out. Hold my calls.”
“But what if it’s an urgent 14 ?” Sara asked in a serious voice.
“Take a message,” I said. “I’ll 15 it as soon as I get back.” I then headed out the door.
When I finally got back to the office, I had a headache. There on my desk was a bright orange sticky note. “Urgent Message! Please take action 16 ,” it said.
“That Sara! I wonder what it is this time. Probably a message from the dry-cleaner’s.” I threw it into my 17 and finished up some work that was urgent.
I came to work early the next morning. I made several calls to set up meetings for the afternoon. In the office next door, I heard Jean slam her telephone down and hurry out.
“The principal of Lee Middle School just called Jean,” one of the coworkers said. “He says they reported a child with unexplained injury yesterday. And they still haven’t gotten a(n) 18 from us.”
“That’s awful! Who took the message?” asked the other.
“Sara did, but she doesn’t 19 who she gave the message to. And what’s worse, the child didn’t show up for school today!”
I 20 . Could they be talking about my “urgent message”? I dug in my wastebasket until I found the orange sticky note: “School Nurse at Lee Middle. Reporting possible child abuse. Please call before school closes.”
Through the half-open door, I could hear Jean talking to Sara. “The child is fine this time, but that does not 21 your mistake.” I shut my eyes tightly to think.
“Sara doesn’t remember putting this message in my box. I could 22 I never got it!” I told myself. Then I 23 my eyes. I knew what I must do. Tightly holding the orange sticky note, I knocked on the door. Sara’s face relaxed as I began to explain.
Weeks later, I opened a file and found a note in Jean’s handwriting: “Ann Matthews is hard working. In the area of social work, mistakes are sometimes made. Ann’s greatest strength is her willingness to take 24 .”
Now, I keep an orange sticky note on my desk to 25 me.

We were extremely poor. We had no house, no food. We had nothing. My parents had many problems. My family was always on the edge of violence. It was unbelievably stressful. There wasn't a moment to relax during my entire childhood.
I wanted to be an artist when I was about six. But my family was so poor that I got knocked off track by the working-class educational system and the environment I was living in. I became a street gang member, causing trouble and fighting against other groups.
Being a teenager with vivid imagination, a strong sense of adventure and some degree of courage, it was attractive to steal cars, drive them away, and get chased by the police.
If I had nothing to do, I would go to evening school to learn painting. I tried to enter one of those art schools, but I was rejected by 11 schools when they heard I had been a street gang member. When I was not accepted, I cried a lot.
When I was finally accepted by Croydon College of Art, I felt I was in heaven. I felt that my life had been saved. I worked with great stress that other students found scary, and it scared me too. Unlike other students I could also feel a kind of happiness to do my best to realize my dream.
I went through a long period in my life where my art was not accepted. The only time I almost considered giving up was one morning, about 3 a.m. I had an exhibition in New York. I could sell none of my works. I could not afford to live. I was so defeated. I thought maybe I should go somewhere in the middle of America and find a new job, have a car and a house with a garage. That lasted about an hour, but it was such a stressful experience.
Now I'm famous, and I got a lot of my works sold at a pretty high price. I think before one is famous, one has to be infamous, and before one is accepted, one has to be rejected. Painting doesn't explain itself. Painting is not an explanation. Painting doesn't try to teach. Painting is a body of experiences. Painting is called a hard business. One has to have firm beliefs. And I do. One has to have courage to be an artist because one has got to put up with all the insults one has to suffer as an artist. So one has to persist, in other words, to have a little hope.

32. What does the underlined word “ that ” in Para. 6 refer to?

A new study has found that social media could be affecting the sleep of young adults. The study is a project of researchers at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine. They found that young people who often use social media are more likely to suffer from sleep disorders than those who use social media less.
The researchers say doctors should ask young adults about their use of social media when treating sleep issues. "This is one of the first pieces of evidence that social media use really can affect your sleep," said Jessica C. Levenson. She is a postdoctoral researcher in the university's Department of Psychiatry. She was the lead author of a report on the study. The researchers set out to examine the connection between social media use and sleep among young adults.
The researchers wanted to find out how often young people used social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and etc.. For the study, they gave questionnaires to nearly 1,800 adults, aged 19 to 32. On average, members of the study group used social media sites one hour a day. They also visited various social media accounts 30 times per week. Thirty percent of the study's participants reported having serious problems with sleeping. Those people who used social media a lot were three times more likely to have a sleep disorder. And those who spent the most time on social media were two times as likely to suffer from sleep disturbances.
Frequent checking is big part of the problem. Levenson said the number of times a person visits social media is a better predictor of sleep problems than overall time spent on social media. If this is true, she adds, then practices that stop such behaviors may be most effective.
Researchers say social media can influence sleep patterns in a number of ways. People can lose sleep by staying up too late looking at social media. Sensitive issues argued about on social media can cause "emotional, cognitive or physiological" excitement. Using an electronic device can disturb a body's natural sleep rhythms because of the light coming from cell phones or computer screens. The researchers note that in some cases, young adults who have a hard time sleeping may use social media to help them fall asleep.
"It also may be that both of these hypotheses (假定) are true," says Brian A. Primack. He is director of the Center for Research on Media, Technology and Health. He is also the study's senior author. Primack says, "Difficult sleeping may lead to increased use of social media, which may in turn lead to more problems sleeping. This cycle may be particularly problematic with social media. Many forms of social media involve interactive screen time that is stimulating (刺激) and rewarding and, for those reasons, can keep you awake."
34. From the results of the questionnaire, who are more likely to have a sleep problem?
A. The participants aged from 19 to 32.
B. The participants visiting social media frequently.
C. The participants using social media sites one hour a day.
D. The participants spending the most time on social media.
35. The main purpose of the passage is to ______.
A. compare and evaluate
B. examine and reason
C. inform and explain
D. argue and conclude
36. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Social Media Is Keeping Young Adults Awake
B. Difficult Sleeping Is Affecting Sleeping Patterns
C. Electric Devices Are Influencing Sleep Rhythms
D. Young Adults Are Suffering from Sleep Disorders

MCDONALD’S, one of the world’s largest restaurant chains, recently made a big decision. On March 9, the company announced that its chicken suppliers in the US would stop using human antibiotics within two years. Antibiotics are medicines that attack harmful bacteria1 to help cure illnesses. Many cattle, pig and chicken producers give their livestock2 antibiotics to help them stay healthy. Feeding antibiotics to animals is legal in the US. But the producers feed their livestock not only animal antibiotics, but also those used by humans. Experts say it can lead to public health problems. Overuse of these human antibiotics could cause germs3 to become resistant4 to drugs. When the drugs are used to treat humans, they may no longer be effective. Many US fast food restaurants already say they serve chicken which are raised without antibiotics, but the decision by McDonald’s is important because of its size. The company has over 30,000 stores around the world, including 14,000 in the US. In recent years, customers have started to care more about food ingredients5. If they feel certain foods are made with ingredients that are of low quality or don’t meet certain levels of quality, they’ll choose other higher quality foods. After seeing customer visits to US stores drop two years in a row, McDonald’s says more changes to their food could be on the way. However, McDonald’s won’t be applying the new antibiotics policy to its Chinese stores soon. The company said it’s not a double standard but they have to take Chinese food safety standards into consideration. “The measures will be carried out gradually, based on the actual situation of Chinese agriculture,” McDonald’s China said in a statement.

2. livestock: the animals kept on a farm

阅读下面短文,从各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
“There is no evidence that any amount of homework improves the academic performance of elementary students.”
This statement, by homework research expert Harris Cooper, of Duke University, is surprising to hear, no matter which side of the homework debate you’re on. Can it be true that the hours of lost playtime, power struggles and tears are all for naught? That millions of families go through a nightly ritual that doesn’t help? Homework is such an accepted practice that it’s hard for most adults to even question its value.
When you look at the facts, however, here’s what you find: Homework has benefits, but its benefits are age dependent.
For elementary-aged children, research suggests that studying in class gets superior learning results, while extra schoolwork at home is just . . . extra work. Even in middle school, the relationship between homework and academic success is minimal at best. By the time kids reach high school, homework provides academic benefit, but only in moderation. More than two hours per night is the limit. After that amount, the benefits taper off. “The research is very clear,” agrees Etta Kralovec, education professor at the University of Arizona. “There’s no benefit at the elementary school level.”
Before going further, let’s get rid of the myth that these research results are due to a handful of poorly constructed studies. In fact, it’s the opposite. Cooper collected 120 studies in 1989 and another 60 studies in 2006. This comprehensive analysis of multiple research studies found no evidence of academic benefit at the elementary level. It did, however, find a negative impact on children’s attitudes toward school.
This is what’s worrying. Homework does have an impact on young students, but it’s not a good one. A child just beginning school deserves the chance to develop a love of learning. Instead, homework at a young age causes many kids to turn against school, future homework and academic learning. And it’s a long road. A child in kindergarten is facing 13 years of homework ahead of him or her.
Then there’s the damage to personal relationships. In thousands of homes across the country, families battle over homework nightly. Parents complain and persuade. Overtired children protest and cry. Instead of connecting and supporting each other at the end of the day, too many families find themselves locked in the “did you do your homework?” cycle.
When homework comes too early, it’s hard for children to deal with assignments independently — they need adult help to remember assignments and figure out how to do the work. Parents often take the role of Homework Patrol Cop. Besides the constant conflict, having a Homework Patrol Cop in the house weakens one of the possible purposes of homework: responsibility.
1. Homework research expert Harris Cooper may agree that __________.
A. elementary students have too much playtime
B. the value of homework should not be questioned
C. extra school work at home helps improve learning results
D. doing homework may not improve elementary students’ scores
2. The underlined words “all for naught” in Para. 2 probably mean ________.
A. useless B. valuable C. harmful D. helpful
3. What does Para. 4 mainly talk about?
A. Homework is very necessary for elementary-aged kids.
B. The benefits of homework are actually age-dependent.
C. Academic success depends on the amount of homework.
D. There are many benefits for middle school students to do homework.
4. What might be the possible consequence of homework for elementary students?
A. They become troublesome at school.
B. They develop a good habit of doing homework.
C. They fight with their parents against doing homework.
D. They can do homework without their parents’ supervision.

One possible version:
With the growing number of private cars, air pollution has become a serious problem in Beijing. The polluted air seriously affects our health.
Last Monday, we held a class meeting with the theme “Green Travel”. At the meeting, we discussed the causes and effects of air pollution and came up with some possible solutions. We all agreed that it was time to take action without hesitation. In order to have more people join us, we put up some posters on the walls and advised people to travel in a more environmentally-friendly way. Upon seeing our posters and hearing us out, they agreed.
In the following days, many of us changed how we travelled to school. Some took buses and others took the subway. For me, I really enjoyed cycling to school.
I believe if everyone makes small changes, we’ll improve the quality of our air. A small step in the right direction can surely make a big difference.

W: Dinner will be ready soon, Tony. Go and wash your hands first.
M: OK. By the way, did anyone call me?
W: Yes. A girl named Kathy asked you for her book.
M: Oh, my God! I forgot it! I left the book in the classroom!
W: You are so careless!
M: I should have returned the book to her this afternoon, but Jim invited me to play football. I was so tired that I hurried back without going back to the classroom.
W: It sounds as if she needs the book right away.
M: I must go back to get it immediately.

M: I’d like some mountain bikes for children.
W: Mountain bikes…yes. What color do you want? We have black and red, and yellow and purple as well.
M: Yellow and purple.
W: All right… Mountain bikes in yellow and purple. How many do you want? The recommended price is $139. If your order is more than 20, the price is $120.
M: I see. I want 40.
W: OK. More details, your name and address, please?
M: I’m Jerry Cook at 127 Clonard Road. C-L-O-N-A-R-D, Clonard Road.
W: Right, and your phone number?
