Dear Ms. Smith,
I don’t know if you still remember me. Perhaps you don’t. After all, I am only one of the
many people, at one time or another, that you have helped.
I don’t remember your face as clearly as I wish I could, but I do remember how you looked
at me. I was nine years old and standing at your desk, not for borrowing a book but looking for
hope, for a path forward. I remember that you smiled at me warmly in the library. I just felt I was
safe staying with you.
You were always there—a kind, supportive adult. When I asked you a question, you would
do your best to explain and answer it. When I felt confused because life seemed to be harder than I
had imagined it could be, I would go to you. You would always calm me down by sharing your
love for books with me. You would always help me find a way out.
I don’t know how to thank you enough, but I’ll try. Thank you for letting me understand
that books can be like medicine. Thank you for knowing that sometimes, people come to you not
for books at all. You are a carer, a social worker, a soul(心灵) teacher, among the many other roles

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not
munication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to
communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here is some advice for you to bridge the
generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents
probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself
well if you are angry. Firstly keep calm. Then make sure you understand why you are unhappy.
Next think about what you want to say to them. If you don’t want to talk with them face to face,
try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something.
You can keep your opinions to yourself and try to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree
with him about buying a toy. They argued about it. But she finally agreed with him. Michael
bought the toy, but only played it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might disagree with you on something. In these situations, it is
especially important to show love and respect to them. It will help keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from yours. Tell your
parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your
purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is a
pleasure to have a try!

But on the eighty-fifth day, he felt a sudden strong pull on his line. He held his hands harder, and
he knew this was not a common fish.
“He must be huge,” the old man whispered. The line began to cut into his hands, but he
refused to let it go. Hours passed. The sun burned him, and his back ached from turning. Still, he
held on.
As night fell, the fish leaped out of the water. The old man’s heart raced. “I must not lose
him,” he thought. He tied the line to the boat and sat against it, trying to save his strength.
In the early morning, the old man’s hands were hurt, and his legs shook. Yet, he kept talking
to himself, “A man can be destroyed(毁灭 ) but not beaten.” He remembered teaching the boy,
Manolin, how to fight. “Patience,” he had said. “The sea rewards those who respect it.”
Suddenly, the fish surfaced again. This time, it was closer. The old man raised his
harpoon(鱼叉) shaking arms.
Tired but proud, the old man tied the fish to his boat. However, sharks soon smelled the
blood. They attacked, trying to eat his prize. The old man fought and shouted, “I will fight to the
end!”
When he finally returned to the beach, only the fish’s skeleton(骨架 ) remained. The boy
rushed to him. “You did it!” he cried. The old man smiled weakly. “But the sharks took
