Asking for directions is the first thing we need to do when we get to a different
country.Knowing how to ask for help can make our life much easier! Here are some tips for you.
Use greetings and polite expressions
Starting the conversation with a friendly greeting is a must.If you want to get a great answer ,begin by saying “hello ”.And finish with a “thank you ” and “have a nice day ”. Examples: Excuse me ,could you help me? Hello!May I ask for some help?I need to get to the CN Tower.
Build your vocabulary
You should know the basic vocabulary that can be used when getting directions.Try to remember places like High Park ,Queen Street ,and words like traffic lights ,bank ,block ,etc. Examples: It’s about two blocks away from here. Go along the street until you reach the traffic lights.
Learn the most commonly used prepositions and adverbs
Some important prepositions to remember are between ,next to ,and straight ahead. And the adverbs near, nearer ,and nearest are very useful when you need to find somewhere fast. Examples: The zoo is straight ahead. It’s between a bank and a post office.

Every city in the world has its own landmarks. You can cut down on search time if you know what the important landmarks are. Examples: It is next to the CN Tower! Go past the Aquarium and then turn left.

Does it seem that the things you say often cause offense(冒犯)? If so , maybe people think that your English isn’t polite. Learn how to be polite with this great guide!
◆“I’m afraid I can’t. ” vs “No. ”
It can often be difficult to refuse an invitation from a friend. Simply saying “No ”
would sound impolite. Next time you have to refuse an invitation , you can say , “I’m afraid I can’t. ”
◆“Would you mind … ? ” vs “Stop it! ”
If someone does something you don’t like , would you like him or her to stop? To get the good result , rather than shouting “Stop talking on your phone in the cinema! ”, ask him or her politely by saying “Would you mind not using your phone in the cinema , please? ”
◆“Can you pass me … ? ” vs “Give me … ”
People do not like being told what to do , so it’s sometimes difficult to get what you want without causing frustration(懊恼). Replace(替换) phrases that sound like commands , such as “Give me the newspaper. ”, with a request like “Can you pass me the newspaper? ”
◆“Could you give me five minutes? ” vs “Go away. ”
You’re really busy at work , but your co-worker needs your help. When you’re busy and can’t do anything else ,just saying “Go away. ” is certainly not proper. Instead,
keep everyone happy by using the phrase “Could you give me five minutes? ”

C
You can get worried in Costa Rica , especially in San Jose , trying to find your way around. Except for the center of San Jose , most streets have no names or numbers.
People use known landmarks to get around , find addresses and give directions.
It is easier to find your way in the center of San Jose. Avenues(大道) run east to west. Streets run north to south. If you get lost , looking for a street sign on the side of a building will usually help you get to your place.
To find your way around Costa Rica , you need to know that “ 100 meters ” is another way of saying one block or 50 meters for half a block. The word “vara ” is often used instead of the word “meter ” when people there are giving directions.
Landmarks , such as corner stores , shopping malls , schools and other buildings , are usually used with the metric(米制的) block system to locate addresses. For example , to find a house , someone might say , “From that shopping mall , 200 meters west and 300 meters south. ” An old trick Costa Ricans often use is finding four compass points(方位点). The front doors of all churches in Costa Rica face west. If you live in San Jose , there is another way for finding the compass points. The Poas Volcano is north , the Cruz de Alajucla Mountain is south , the direction of Cartago is east and the direction of the Sabana or Rohrmoser is west. This system of using landmarks should make it easier for you to find your way around the city.
( A )55.What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A. How to find your way in the center of San Jose.
B. How to build a house in the center of San Jose.
C. What to do when you travel in San Jose.
( C )56. If you want to walk three blocks in Costa Rica , how far do you walk?
A. 100 meters. B. 150 meters. C. 300 meters.
( C )57. How does the writer introduce each way of finding the way in Costa Rica?
A. By telling a story.
B. By telling some experiences.
C. By giving examples.
( B )58. What is the text mainly about?
A. The ways to travel to Costa Rica.
B. Finding your way in Costa Rica.
C. Famous places in Costa Rica.

根据短文内容,从框内6个选项中选出能分别填入5个小题空白处的最佳选项。

D. First , you must know some important and useful expressions.

Homestays offer cheap places to stay and the chance for guests to see the area like a local. They are very popular with people who want to stay in another country to study or on holiday. We asked three families who run homestays to tell us about where they live.
The Atal family
Our family home is in a small village in the north of Pakistan , in the Himalayan mountains. The village is quite small and very quiet. The mountains are extremely beautiful. You can go for long walks and swim in the rivers , but there are no shops, cinemas or cafes.
Kate and Julian Foxton
Our two-bed house is by the sea in the south-west of England. It is about five minutes ’ drive to the nearest village of Portreath. There are lots of beaches , rivers and forests and it is very quiet. We spend a lot of time reading books , watching films and going for walks. Our area is great for sports like surfing , kayaking(皮艇运动) and mountain biking. However , the houses here are expensive , which can be a problem for local people. There are no buses or trains here , so it can be difficult to get around without a car.
Chafic and Aline Halwany
Our home is near the center of Beirut , Lebanon , one of the largest cities in the Middle East. There are lots of cafes and restaurants , which open late at night. We love it here because it’s so friendly and you can always find what you need—lots of people come to stay to learn Arabic and French. However , it can be noisy at night , and there is quite a lot of traffic during the day.

A. By telling a story.
B. By telling some experiences.
C. By giving examples.
( B )58. What is the text mainly about?

B. Finding your way in Costa Rica.
C. Famous places in Costa Rica.

Homestays are becoming more and more popular , and people around the world are offering their homes as hotels.

To find your way around Costa Rica, you need to know that “100 meters” is another way of saying one block or 50 meters for half a block. The word “vara” is often used instead of the word “meter” when people there are giving directions.
Landmarks, such as corner stores, shopping malls, schools and other buildings, are usually used with the metric(米制的) block system to locate addresses. For example, to find a house, someone might say, “From that shopping mall, 200 meters west and 300 meters south.” An old trick Costa Ricans often use is finding four compass points(方位点). The front doors of all churches in Costa Rica face west. If you live in San Jose, there is another way for finding the compass points. The Poas Volcano is north, the Cruz de Alajucla Mountain is south, the direction of Cartago is east and the direction of the Sabana or Rohrmoser is west. This system of using landmarks should make it easier for you to find your way around the city.

Homestays are becoming more and more popular, and people around the world are
offering their homes as hotels. Homestays offer cheap places to stay and the chance for
guests to see the area like a local. They are very popular with people who want to stay in
another country to study or on holiday. We asked three families who run homestays to tell
us about where they live.
  The Atal family
Our family home is in a small village in the north of Pakistan, in the Himalayan
mountains. The village is quite small and very quiet. The mountains are extremely
beautiful. You can go for long walks and swim in the rivers, but there are no shops,
cinemas or cafes.
Kate and Julian Foxton
Our two-bed house is by the sea in the south-west of England. It is about five
minutes’ drive to the nearest village of Portreath. There are lots of beaches, rivers and
forests and it is very quiet. We spend a lot of time reading books, watching films and
going for walks. Our area is great for sports like surfing, kayaking(皮艇运动) and
mountain biking. However, the houses here are expensive, which can be a problem for
local people. There are no buses or trains here, so it can be difficult to get around without
a car.
Chafic and Aline Halwany
Our home is near the center of Beirut, Lebanon, one of the largest cities in the
Middle East. There are lots of cafes and restaurants, which open late at night. We love it
here because it’s so friendly and you can always find what you need—lots of people come
to stay to learn Arabic and French. However, it can be noisy at night, and there is quite
a lot of traffic during the day.

To Be a Good Traveler

How to be a good traveler?I think we should do the following.
First of all,we need to travel in an environmentally friendly way.We can try to
walk or ride a bike as much as possible. Then we have to take care of the environment. We
should protect the water source and not litter everywhere.Secondly,we should spend
money properly. It’s good to buy some local products and support the development of local
tourism, but you’d better not buy something you can’t afford. Finally,we should love
charity activities. We can take an active part in volunteer activities to help those who need
help.
