Plant Hope Under the Sen: A Scientist’s Story
Zhang Peidong from the Ocean University of China has spent the pus 17 years on one thing: planting “grass”. This special grass, known as seagrass, grow in the ocean. It helps clean the air by taking in carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and provides food for many sea animals.
Staring in 2008, Zhang’s team studied how seagrass grow in coastal waters. They bravely went into cold water and carefully recorded every small change of the seagrass. “When does seagrass produce flowers and seeds (种子) When do the seeds fall off And when do they start to grow ” Zhang asked. To find out tho answers, they did many experiments and never gave up.
Zhang said the biggest difficultly in restoring (修) seagrass beds is planting the seeds in the right place. “We usually plant the seeds at 1 to 1.5 cm deep in the soil,” said Zhang. “If the seeds are placed too deep, they can’t grow easily, while if they are too near the surface, the water might wash them away.”
To help the seagrass grow faster, the team came up with new methods. Every June, they collect young seagrass plants and grow them in pools. By the end of September, they move the young plants lo the ocean floor.
Thanks to their efforts, there is now more seagrass in the ocean. This has made the water cleaner and brought more animals to the area. For Zhang’s team, every tiny plant is a step toward making the sea healthy again. They believe that even small actions can make a big difference for the future of the ocean.

Should books always have a happy ending
The purpose of World Book Day is to encourage people to enjoy reading and there’s no doubt that a book’s ending is usually a big part of that joy. Even so, there are plenty of stories that don’t finish on a happy note. What do you think Should books always have a happy ending
Part of the reason we read in the first place is that reading makes us happy. We read to get away from troubles and worries in real life. If your reading experiences are full of sadness or other negative feelings, you may give up reading. If your experiences of reading are connected to positive feelings, you could be encouraged to carry on reading. It doesn’t mean stories with happy endings cannot make you enjoy reading. They can also include surprises, which make the stories quite dramatic and exciting, even if you know everything’s going to end well. Exploring love into the characters’ lives is equally as satisfying.
In real life, the story doesn’t stop at the “happy ending”. It doesn’t end. It keeps going past that happy moment to a lifetime of more moments both good and bad. Books with unhappy endings are useful because they show you the true feelings such as sadness but in a controlled way. They can help you deal with these feelings in your life. The stories explore the painful side of love and the topic of heartbreak. Reading about these kinds of things in stories can help make us feel like we’ re not alone in our personal experiences. Some experts say that experiencing negative feelings can make you better at understanding how other people are feeling. This ability, known as empathy, helps you to connect with people and support them through hard times. It’s the “unhappy” endings that have the greatest influence.

Farming and creativity don’t often go hand in hand, but rice paddy art (稻田画) is turning ordinary fields into pictures. However, you may be asking, “How is the art created from only rice plants ” The secret is to use different kinds of rice seeds (种子). As the plants grow, each type shows a different color, from green to purple, to bring an artwork to life.
Creating rice paddy art takes a lot of work and planning. First, farmers draw a picture with a computer program. Then, they mark the design on a map of the field. This helps show which kind of rice should be planted in each section. After that, they’re ready to sow (播种) the seeds, either with the help of drones or volunteers.
Rice paddy art in China started in 2010 in Shenyang, showing dragons and Chinese paintings. Then the practice started to catch on in some other places like Harbin and Hangzhou. On October 24, 2023, a huge 3D rice field painting in Tianjin set a Guinness World Record! Named “Celebrating Harvest, Promoting Harmony”, it covers 50,798 square meters—bigger than any other 3D rice field artwork ever around the world.

What Can Trees Tell us about Climate Change
Trees can keep a record of the earth’s climate (气候) for a long time. In fact, trees can live for hundreds, even thousands of years!
If you see a stump (树桩), you may find that the top of the stump has many rings. These rings can tell us how old the tree is, and what the weather was like during each year of the tree’s life.
In most places, daily weather records have only been kept for the past 100 to 150 years. So, scientists can use trees to learn about the climate hundreds to thousands of years ago.

In the past, scientists didn’t know that trees could sense things. Now, they are discovering that trees can notice lots of things around them!
Trees can feel the four main periods of the year. They know when to drop their leaves in autumn, and when to grow new leaves in spring.
Trees can sense light. They know where the sun is, so their branches grow in that direction. That’s why trees in the northern hemisphere (半球) usually have more branches growing out on the south side.
Trees can recognize insects. If an insect starts eating a tree of a certain species, the tree has clever ways of fighting back. For example, if an insect is eating the trunk of a pine tree, the tree can produce a glue-like liquid (液体), and use it to catch the enemy.
Trees can sense directions. They can feel where “up” and “down” are. There is no light down in the earth, but the roots always know which way to grow.
Tree roots can also sense sounds. They really like the sound of running water when they are thirsty. If the sound continues for a long time, the roots will slowly start growing towards it.
There are still many things we don’t know about trees. Scientists are working hard to find out more.

When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it’s easy to be hard on yourself. Then stress is caused. Feelings of anger, disappointment and sadness come along. That’s why such stress needs to be dealt with.
Max, a 14-year-old boy, used to be very competitive and always felt stressed. Now he is learning to give himself care and kindness. When he doesn’t win or get the top marks, he talks to himself, “It’s OK not to be perfect.” He knows he always does his best and that is enough.
What Max does is called self-compassion (自我和解). With self-compassion, you treat yourself kindly like a friend. It allows you to forgive (原谅) yourself when you mess up or fail. After feelings of guilt (愧疚) go away, you get more relaxed and you can think more clearly. This way self-compassion makes you move forward. Many studies have shown it is of great help.
However, some disagree. They argue that self-compassion leads people to be less active. But Breines and Chen’s study had a different result. They gave students a difficult word test. The students were given the chance to study for a second test. They found those who were compassionate toward their failure spent more time preparing.
Experts suggest that you should write a letter to yourself, describing the situation that causes your pain and accepting how you feel. Or you can do something you like to make yourself feel at peace. In today’s world, many people want quick success, but real growth takes time and the right mindset. Mindset is how we think about our abilities. It plays a big role in our progress. There are two kinds of mindsets: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.
Carol Dweck, a professor at Stanford University, studied these two mindsets:

My name is Jeff. I like learning foreign languages. When I retired (退休) in 2018, I could speak three foreign languages. At that time, my biggest wish was to learn a new one.
Later, I watched a program about Chinese culture on TV. I was so interested in it that I made the decision to learn Chinese. I found a cultural center in the north of London by chance. It offered Chinese language courses fit for me. In March 2019, I began to learn. To attend the classes, I left my home at 5 a.m. every Saturday and drove 3 hours to the cultural center. But this didn’t stop me. After class, I practiced a lot. Through learning, I developed a love for Chinese poems and joined in activities like Chinese poetry readings. I increasingly dreamed of visiting China.
My Chinese teacher Mr. Liu always mentioned “It’s better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books”. He suggested that I should take part in a study tour in China So in August 2024, I visited Xi’an with my classmates of the cultural center. During the trip, as the student best at Chinese among us, I tried to act as an interpreter (口译员). I helped my classmates in many ways like asking the way and shopping in Chinese. This experience encouraged me to study further.
The British often say “Learning is a lifelong pursuit (追求)”, which means “It is never too late to learn”. I will keep on learning Chinese, hoping to be a lifelong learner. I believe that learning Chinese will bring even more possibilities to my life.

The Super Power of YET!
Growth Mindset:People believe they can improve with effort and learning. Fixed Mindset:People believe their abilities are unchangeable.
She has found that having a growth mindset benefits our learning a lot.
Learning happens in four stages:
One of her experiments is at Parkland Soccer Club. Her group teach the players that mistakes are part of learning. If a player says, “I can’t do this,” that usually means he fears making mistakes. Then he is encouraged to say “I can’t do this, YET!” instead of “I can’t do this!”.
Challenges are… for growth. Let’s believe in ourselves, work hard, and keep improving. The superpower is “YET!”

From Tradition to the Modern
Customs and Tradition
During the Dragon Boat Festival, Chinese always put mugwort leaves on doors or windows to make the air fresh and keep flies and other insects away. Mugwort, a kind of plant, is highly valued for its medical use in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Chinese have been making use of herbs (草药) like mugwort to help people improve health or treat illness for thousands of years.

Nowadays, we are seeing more interest in TCM especially among the young. ①Influenced by TCM ideas, some young people stop having icy drinks. They accept hot Chinese herbal tea, instead. When people feel ill, some choose to go to TCM hospitals and clinics for treatment. With the spread of TCM, some schools start courses about it. For example, students learn to make joss sticks (线香) with herbs in class. More TCM programs appear on TV and the Internet, which helps people form better living habits.
Ideas and Spirit
In fact, the ideas of Traditional Chinese Medicine are everywhere around us. Following the natural rules can make us healthier. As an old saying goes, “Early to bed, early to rise.” TCM also pays more attention to the balance of diet. Different coloured foods are friendly to different parts of the body. White food is good for lungs, red for heart…If a body is like a tree, TCM focuses on its root (根). It aims at keeping the body and mind in harmony (和谐).
