Yu Zeling,an award-winning master of paper cutting, fills her studio with ①cutouts of animals, people, and scenes that are so vivid that they seem to leap from the walls. Her art covers village life in Ansai,a rural district in Shaanxi Province.
Ms Yu came to paper cutting in the late 1970s as naturally as she breathed the ②earthy air.“We were very poor, and when it was time to celebrate the New Year,we all put paper-cuts on the windows to decorate our houses,” she says, recalling the holiday at her childhood home.Ms Yu and others are working to keep the folk art alive, even as it evolves away from its roots as adornment for farmhouses.
The art originated in China in the centuries after paper was invented in A.D.105.Full of auspicious(吉利的) symbols from daily life, the decorations represented good weather, many offspring, long life, wealth, and happiness.
Using newspaper,Ms Yu first practiced cutting the image of a Chinese national flag that she saw in a school textbook. She cut it 100 times before she was satisfied. Then her aunt took over, introducing her to increasingly complicated traditional themes.
Ms Yu was later invited to train in the Ansai’s Cultural Center. After years of training,Ms Yu became a master in her own right, winning one award after another. Her works are on display in museums. But she’s humble about her achievements.“I was,and still am,a farmer,” she says with a smile.

On March 6,2024,a report revealed that in 2023 the order volume of horse-face skirts—a type of hanfu, the traditional style of clothing worn by the Han people—among female users ①skyrocketed by 841 percent compared to the previous year.
“I’ve noticed that there are so many people wearing horse-face skirts on the streets now, from young women to children;it’s unbelievable,” said Wang Zicheng,a 23-year-old hanfu enthusiast.
He recalled that when he wore hanfu for the first time in 2018 at his coming-of-age ceremony,it was still a minority interest. Now,he is confident wearing it everywhere, even outside of China.
As hanfu gains popularity, traditional attire(服装) and modern fashion are merging(融合),influencing not only clothing styles but also cultural perceptions and people’s understanding.
Some hanfu enthusiasts argue that each design and structural form of hanfu carries distinct historical and cultural significance, insisting that these details should be adhered to(遵循) strictly. However, other consumers prioritize the aesthetic(美感) and comfort of the clothing.
Zhou Shuang,37,②specializes in character styling for film and television. She pointed out that for those unfamiliar with traditional clothing culture,it’s ③understandable for them to desire a mixture of classical elegance with modern fashion.

A potential solution could be integrating hanfu into everyday attire.Indeed,Zhou’s students are currently exploring ways to preserve hanfu’s cultural heritage while accommodating the demands of daily fashion choices.

D.Hanfu has mixed clothing styles from other countries.
7.What are Zhou’s students doing now

In 2020,the parents of the landmark bird were ②translocated from the Outer Hebrides and north-west Sutherland in Scotland to the Isle of Wight. This is an area with plentiful food to sustain them.It is also a location from which the birds could spread out to cliffs, lakes and forests.

The chick hatched earlier this summer at a nest on private land, the exact location of which is being kept a secret to ensure the welfare of the young bird.

The harsh winters and modern cities can make life tough for a wild animal, especially when they get lost and are outside their natural habitat for too long.Animal shelters are crowded with animals in ①desperate need of help, especially during the winter season. 1
One day,a man found a small owl(猫头鹰) that was soaking wet and appeared to be struggling. He brought it into a local shelter. 2 The little owl was unable to fly,not because of an injury, but because it was too fat.
The owl weighed 245 grams, which was 33% more than the upper limit of what an owl that size should weigh. The reason for the weight gain was quite natural. The owl was eating too much. The winter had been unusually warm, and as a result, the area had a higher than normal population of mice. 3 So it got carried away.
The shelter staff put the owl on a ②systematic plan of diet and exercise, and it started to lose weight quickly. After some time, the owl was back to its normal health and was released back into the wild.
The question of whether this obesity issue is a strange result of climate change or just a coincidence(巧合) is difficult to say. 4 Wild animals are not used to living in modern cities, and they often struggle to survive.Luckily, there are many animal shelters that offer refuge for these animals. These shelters help restore them to their natural condition and put them back into the wild.
5 Some focus on specific animals, such as owls, while others focus on a particular region. However, they all have the same goal—to provide a safe haven for wild animals.
A.Different types of animal shelters have different purposes.
B.Animal shelters are not just a place for injured or sick animals.
C.This meant that it was like an all-you-can-eat buffet for the little owl.
D.They are really important when animals struggle to survive in cold weather.
E.After a thorough check-up,the shelter staff found out that it was not injured at all.
F.However,it is clear that it is vital to care for wild animals and to ensure their safety.

Being an opinion writer and journalist,I was always demanded that I make a public statement about hot issues online. The voices yelling at me and anyone else who failed to post seemed to believe that not making a statement was itself a statement—and an ①immoral one,at that.
On social media, people take a position that results in positive comments but reduces complex issues to a simple yes or no.Taking simplistic ②stands can also lead to twisting words. This kind of simple thinking is deeply unserious and further fuels hatred(敌意),changing personal opinions into ③extremism and mistaking the expressions of anger for brave action in the face of horror.
These loud,④reductive declarations reflect genuine fear about horrors that lie beyond words.Simple binaries imply simple solutions. And it’s much more pleasant to tell yourself you stand on the side of good, against evil, than to question whether the lines of boundaries were drawn correctly.
Sitting with uncertainty is hard, especially when social media has urged us to expect perfect real-time information during unfortunate events and immediate answers and resolution.Moral certainty is a point we stand on when factual certainty is not possible. And the faster we express it,the more certain we appear.
Such thoughtless posts are not what bother me most, though.Instead,it’s the idea that not posting is wrong somehow—that everyone needs to speak, all the time.It discourages shutting up and listening and letting the voices that matter the most be heard over the noise. It suggests that having any doubts about what’s happening or forming moral conclusions that don’t make sense to share on social media is unacceptable.
I do have opinions,of course, but they don’t fit on social media. While I’ve regretted posting half-formed thoughts too quickly,I’ve never regretted waiting until I was less angry or not posting at all.
1.What does the author think of people’s quick posts on hot issues
A.Positive. B.Irresponsible.
C.Uncaring. D.Unkind.
2.What do paragraphs 3 and 4 try to explain
A. Reasons why people rush to post opinions.
B.Ways people use to express ideas.
C.Means by which people solve difficult problems.
D.Facts on which people base their judgement.
3.What upsets the author most
A. Too many posts online.
B.Too much false information.
C.People’s judgement on not posting.
D.People’s unawareness of current issues.
4.What message does the author really convey
A. It’s useless to post ideas on social media.
B.It’s better to keep silent than blindly follow suit.
C.Everyone has the right to voice his opinion.
D.Everyone must guard network security.

Since the growth of online streaming services, subtitling(加字幕) has become something of an art.
Subtitles started out as an accessibility feature for deaf audiences, and to translate foreign language films into your own.Of course,it’s not just deaf audiences that subtitles help. The translated subtitles of foreign films are great for learning languages, letting you read and hear how it’s pronounced at the same time.Movie subtitles are written ahead of time, but subtitling for live TV has to be done in the moment as the person is speaking,so mistakes are likely to happen. But because subtitles can be everything, from monster squelches(扑哧声) to bombs exploding,it’s a great way to learn many things, such as new adjectives.
Subtitler Karli Witkowska explained how her choice of adjective creates emotion for the audience.Karli belongs to a team of subtitlers who try to make their descriptions as close as possible to the sounds they hear.Karli bases her descriptions on the film’s type. The sound effects needed for a ①thriller like Stranger Things—creaking(嘎吱作响的) stairs and sudden screams—are very different from the sounds used in historical period dramas. This influences the adjective Karli chooses to describe a sound. For example,light-hearted and cheerful music might be described as jaunty—full of energy and confidence.
Another time, her team found exactly the right expression “gobsmacked silence”.In this scene, the characters were about to gasp—take in a short, sudden, and quick breath of air without speech or sound.“So when my colleague came up with that one,I definitely gave him a big ②thumbs-up,” she said.
In fact, the phrase “gobsmacked silence” is so good that it goes viral and is being used in all kinds of situations.
5.What does the writer want to convey about subtitling in paragraph 2
A.It helps solve learning problems.
B.It helps people to stay concentrated.
C.It can be important and challenging.
D.It improves ability of understanding.
6.Which emotion does “gobsmacked silence” possibly express
A.Sad. B.Hopeful.
C.Disappointed. D.Surprised.
7.What does Karli think of her teammate’s work
A.It needs improving. B.It’s well done.
C.It makes her speechless. D.It’s very popular.
8.Which of the following statement will Karli possibly agree with
A. Subtitling is difficult but fashionable.
B.Subtitlers are often some strange persons.
C.Subtitlers are those who create new words.
D.Subtitling involves translating sounds accurately.

What exactly is the importance of teachers in the current ①educational landscape The last few years have witnessed the rise of education technology and online tutoring firms. 1 Such people, however, have completely ignored the one thing that makes studying in a proper classroom ②irreplaceable and that is the importance of teachers.
The Internet has more information about any given topic than any one person can ever hope to possess. 2 Knowing that “tomato is a fruit” is information, and not putting it in a fruit salad is wisdom. This example does a perfect job in illustrating just how important wisdom is in the day to day life.Books and the Internet can give you information, but only a teacher can pass on wisdom. 3
Understanding the reason for the poor performance of a particular child and helping them overcome their weakness while also pushing the top performers to do better are things only a teacher can do.
You can develop the most amazing online tutoring platform and fill it with amazing and interesting videos but it is never enough. 4 But videos are made for a general audience. They can hardly be sufficient for the problems that students face in their life outside the classroom.Only teachers who have spent time with their students can guide the students in a way that can help them figure a way out of any problem they might be facing in their life.
5 While the list of reasons stating the importance of teachers is a bit too long to put in a single article, these two are sufficient to silence anyone who believes that going to school to be taught by proper teachers will soon become obsolete.
A.Wisdom, however,is something that it badly lacks.
B.Every single student is unique in his or her own way.
C.Teachers are also important in shaping the future of the youth.
D.On this point, the importance of teachers should never be understated.
E.Everything people can possibly learn is freely available on the Internet.
F.Many argue that they might one day completely replace formal schooling.

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is an Italian-American tradition that dates back to an immigration(移民) wave in the 1900s.The Italian American tradition of the “Feast of the Seven Fishes” has appeared in movies and recently in the hit show The Bear. But talking of the origin, you’ll get many different answers. The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a dear tradition to many Italian Americans who enjoy at least seven different seafood dishes on Christmas Eve.
A vast majority of Italian immigrants to the United States were from rural Southern Italy at the turn of the 19th century. They came to America because there were jobs from building railroads to skyscrapers.Friends and families found success and brought their loved ones to the U.S.Some say fish was chosen for the Feast because it was ①plentiful for impoverished families in Southern Italy.Others say the sea represented Italian Americans’ connection between their old and new homes.
Writer and director Robert Tinnell made a comic in 2004 about his experience with the Feast of the Seven Fishes, which he later made into a 2019 movie.Growing up in North Central West Virginia,he ②fondly remembers his great grandmother organizing the Feast. After she died, his grandfather and other men in the family took over. That particular manly activity is something that the first Italian immigrants would have also performed out of necessity:men came to America first, without their wives and daughters.
However, knowledge about where to shop, when to prepare, how to cook, the history behind the meal and family traditions soon became the responsibility of mothers to pass down to their daughters, says Di Giovine,a professor at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. They are also likely the ones who have the final say in making changes to recipes.Over time, families often adjust the menu to make things easier, cheaper, more abundant, and more accommodating of dietary restrictions.

From beautiful bronze(青铜) wine cups to grand bronze ding(food containers),this exhibition ①features discoveries that will fundamentally change visitors’ understanding of ancient Chinese civilization.
At about the same time that Stonehenge was rising in England,a Bronze Age culture was developing in China that in many respects was seldom equaled and never surpassed. This development seemed to have begun by 1600 BCE in the Shang (about 1600 BCE—1046 BCE) along the Yellow River. For thousands of years, this area had witnessed cultures of increasing complexity, which laid the foundation of the Chinese civilization.By the time of the Bronze Age,this culture was characterized by a strong centralized government, urban communities with obvious social ②classes,a distinctive system of writing, strict religious rituals, diversified art forms, and advanced bronze-producing methods.
Unlike other cultures, where bronze was first used chiefly for tools and weapons,in China, bronze was used to make vessels(容器) that played central roles in official ceremonies and ancestor worship for more than 1,000 years, even after the official beginnings of the Iron Age in 400 BCE.Possession of bronze vessels thus became a symbol for the holding of power and rulers used bronze cups and food containers to present offerings of food and wine to royal ancestors.
During Shang times, wine played a major part in such ceremonies, and containers for wine therefore far ③outnumbered other types. Then, the Shang were criticized for too much wine drinking, which gave the Zhou,Shang’s enemy, the right to overthrow the Shang.Safeguarding its own dynasty, the Zhou replaced the wine vessels with more practical cooking and storage tools.
After the Shang period, bronze vessels became more important as expressions of personal status than as vehicles for official ceremonies. This is evident from the changing content of bronze inscriptions.Carved into the surface of a vessel, these writings first appeared during the late Shang period as an identification of the vessel’s owner or of the ancestor to whom it was dedicated.During the Western Zhou period, inscriptions became increasingly common and lengthier, praising the achievements of the owners.
5.What was happening in China by the time Stonehenge was rising in England
A. The Chinese had yet to invent their writing system.
B.China was still relatively backward in many respects.
C.China had already had a strong centralized government.
D.Social classes just started to emerge in the Chinese cities.

A. The main applications of bronze in China.
B.The complex official ceremonies in China.
C.The significance of the discovery of bronze.
D.The differences between China and other countries.
7.Which of the following most probably belongs to the Zhou
A. Huge bronze ding with short religious texts.
B.Bronze vessels showing the kings’ achievements.
C.An unearthed tomb with lots of bronze wine cups.
D.An ancient kitchen with lots of bronze cooking pots.

Seated at the grand piano in MIT’s Killian Hall last fall,first-year student Jacqueline Wang played one piece of Mozart’s music. When she’d finished,Mi-Eun Kim,a pianist and lecturer at MIT,asked her to move to the back of the hall.Kim ①tapped at an iPad.Suddenly, the music Wang had just played poured forth again from the piano—its keys sinking and rising just as they had with Wang’s fingers on them.Wang stood with a confused expression, taking in a repeat of her own performance.
This unusual lesson took place during a three-week residency(驻留期) of the Steinway Spirior,a piano that obtains the data of live performances and offers students new possibilities for studying and experimenting with music.
Wang was one of several participants to have the experience of hearing herself play while watching the data of her performance move up and down across a screen:color-coded rectangles(矩形) indicating the speed and duration of each note, and a moving line ②charting her use of the damper pedal(阻尼踏板).Wang could even edit her own performance when Kim suggested her rhythmic use of the pedal might be unnecessary.Using the iPad ③interface to erase the pedaling entirely, they listened to the playback again, the notes gaining new clarity.
For Wang, the session introduced an element she’d never experienced since beginning her piano studies. The visual display of how long each key was played and with what speed gave her a more precise demonstration of the ideas of voicing and evenness.
Playing the piano is one of the most complex activities that humans do with their hands. Some people might think the new technology will replace the pianist. In Kim’s view, that human complexity is complemented by this kind of technical possibility. But it doesn’t mean all of the things that go into learning music will be abandoned. It’s going to be an ④invaluable third partner:the student, the teacher, and the Spirior. It’s going to play a necessary role in lots of musical efforts.

It’s happened to all of us:a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately ①transported back to a time in our past. 1
There are a few things that connect tunes with our memories.Music is often a necessary element of many important life events, and it is also very effective in ②arresting our attention. 2 Besides, the emotional nature of music helps make it particularly memorable.
We often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. The more familiar a piece of music is,the more effective it is in bringing back memories. 3 The reason is that we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than to watch a film or a TV programme in the same way.
Tiffany Jenkins, writing for a culture column, has a different opinion: 4 She tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs because of this characteristic. The rhythm(韵律) and rhyme in lines of songs all serve as memory aids.
5 This fact corresponds with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump(怀旧性记忆)”,where older adults (over forty) have increased ③recollection of events that occurred during their adolescence and early adulthood.
It’s clear that our memories and music are closely linked—to the point that music is being used to help Alzheimer’s disease sufferers access memories that they thought they had lost.
A.Familiarity is important.
B.Music itself is easy to remember.
C.But what makes music so effective in doing this
D.Our musical preference usually forms during our teens.
E.This applies to music more than other cultural products.
F.Pop music especially can be connected with an important memory.
G.Music and these life events are likely to be linked together in our memories.
