In a neighborhood in the east of Paris,if you walk out of your front door, you can arrive at a kindergarten in one minute and a bookstore in three minutes.A bakery It’s across the street.Actually, all key things in daily life—work, food, schools and entertainment—are within a 15-minute walk.
This neighborhood was built in this way more than 150 years ago and this old idea of having all important things close by has now evolved into an urban planning model that is gaining popularity around the world.
“A 15-minute city not only improves quality of life, but can also reduce greenhouse gases.Transportation accounts for about 20% of global ①energy-related CO2 pollution, with cars making up almost 10%,” says Carlos Moreno,a professor at University of Paris, who has been helping the city put this idea to use.“Paris should integrate the 15-minute city as part of a broader strategy to get closer to net zero goals.”
Besides reducing greenhouse gases, there are lots of “co-benefits” for people who live in 15-minute cities.Facilities that prioritize walking and biking mean less noise from cars and more safety for the people, less air pollution from cars and daily routines with more walking and biking promote health.Redesigning cities where homes are mixed in with businesses can ②drive more foot traffic to those businesses.
But one challenge to building 15-minute cities across France is financial. Many banks are still unwilling to provide loans for mixed-use developments, because they are still a relatively uncommon way to build communities.Other barriers have to do with parking in a more heavily populated area. The biggest hindrance involves public schools. When couples have kids, they often leave cities for suburbs, which they think have better schools.
“If we want regional ③sustainability,we have to look to these urban places,”Makarewicz says.“But if we want to successfully introduce a 15-minute city approach to an area,we should focus on the way people want to live.”
5.What is a feature of the so-called 15-minute city
A. Better schools are built in the suburbs.
B.People are required to walk or ride bikes.
C.All important daily things are close by.
D.Greenhouse gases are reduced to net zero.
6.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The difficulties of redesigning cities.
B.The benefits of a 15-minute city.
C.The harms of living in big cities.
D.The costs to build 15-minute cities.
7.Which of the following best explains “hindrance” underlined in paragraph 5
A.Failure. B.Plan.
C.Change. D.Problem.

There are a lot of good and logical reasons not to say what you think, especially when others disagree.Offending people isn’t nice, and it can lead to social consequences.Nodding along might seem practical or ①charitable,despite the fact that you are screaming disagreement on the inside. However, the true act of charity is to say what you really think.Your committing to complete honesty can be an act of love.
One of my friends takes honesty to the extreme. He calls talks with others that get to the complete truth of things, even difficult admissions in views,“love conversations”.Once two people have such a conversation, his theory goes, they can understand each other and act accordingly. As a philosophical matter,my friend’s belief of “love conversations” is Kantian. The German philosopher Kant argued that lying to others prevents them from making choices based on the truth, which is contradictory with friendship and love.
In the 1990s,Brad Blanton argued when the truth is hard to accept, telling it can have costs, including social disapproval and broken relationships. But it is worth the consequences because it can reduce stress, deepen connections with others, and reduce emotional reactivity.
Both sides can’t be right here.Either Kant,Blanton, and my friend are embracing a faulty theory,or our society is missing a big opportunity for moral growth. You might say that little white lies are a society lubricant(润滑剂).They can even seem ②virtuous.After telling ③a white lie,I sometimes pat myself on the back, turning my evil into a virtue inside my own head. Some lies might make life easier, but they don’t necessarily make life happier.I wouldn’t want my wife to tell me what she thinks I want to hear,as if we were strangers avoiding conflict, and finding out that she had done so would make me feel distrusted and therefore hurt our relationship.I don’t want a stranger to tell me she likes my writing if she doesn’t,because unreal compliments make me suspicious.

People may typically think of memory as the recollection of the past.Memory enables people to learn from past experiences and apply that knowledge in present circumstances. It is a vital part of our identity. So is culture, the way of life specific to a group of people.
Cultural memory is the constructed understanding of the past that is passed from one generation to the next through text, oral traditions, monuments and other symbols.Cultural memory is often amassed in objects, such as museums or historical monuments. To understand culture, humans access a mass of cultural symbols, such as books.Artifacts of the past provide insights into where we came from.Libraries and the Internet keep a seemingly ①boundless amount of data on what it means to be part of a culture.Cultural memory is the longest-lasting form of memory.
Like all forms of memory, cultural memory has important functions. For example,it makes the experiences a nation owns clear. It provides us with an understanding of the past and the values of the group to which we belong.Besides,it creates a form of shared identity and a means for communicating this identity to new members. The most powerful forms of cultural memory may involve memories of past disastrous experiences undergone(经历) by groups of victims. For example,in Russia, their role in World War Ⅱ—in which tens of millions of Russians were killed—is still an important part of modern Russian identity.Because all groups have cultural memory,it can bring about a spirit of ②resistance or survival among threatened groups.
The main function of cultural memory is not to recall the past, whether it is good or bad.Rather,it is to use knowledge of past experiences to avoid making the same mistakes again and again.Aleida Assmann,a professor who has worked on memory theory since the 1960s,calls this “remembering forward”.Cultural memory enables people to adapt to their culture; it enables cultures to adapt to new circumstances by keeping traces of what worked in the past.

Mayan civilization was a Central American (Mesoamerican) civilization that covered one third of Central America.Mayan civilization is famous for its fully developed written language, striking art, huge architecture, and advanced mathematical and astronomical knowledge. These features came out of the Preclassic Period but reached their highest development in the Classic Period (250 to 900 CE).When it prospered(繁荣),it was one of the most densely populated and culturally active societies in the world.
Mayan civilization was not one single empire, but rather many separate city-states which had a common cultural background.Strangely, after the Classic Period, these cities stopped to be centers of importance.Mayan culture continued and still exists today but in a rural setting. One question that interests scholars is why these cities just disappeared. They were swallowed up by the tropical jungles.Travelers and scholars ①rediscovered them and have studied them only in the last two hundred years or so.In fact, scholars have debates about what happened, but some factors seem to be part of the explanation of why they disappeared.
Toward the end there was large-scale,②continuous warfare among the city-states.The rulers were highly competitive and made fierce wars on one another.Another factor considered is ③overpopulation.Scholars indicate that the Mayan population reached up to 200 people per square kilometer, among the highest in the ④pre-industrial world.Overpopulation led to overuse of the tropical forest, the source of their food.
Research from pollen(花粉) indicates that there was almost no tropical forest left. This led to damage to the environment of the area, further resulting in a lack of water and then drought. Thus warfare, overpopulation, overuse of resources, and destruction of the environment appear to be active factors involved in the disappearance of Mayan cities.
5.What is the function of the first paragraph
A.To present a different view.

A planet that suffers 475℃ beneath a thick acid atmosphere may be the last place you’d expect alien(外星的) life in our solar system. But one NASA scientist claims that extraterrestrials(天外来客) are most likely hiding on Venus amid conditions that are unbearable for humans. The new theory was put forward by the research scientist Dr Michelle Thaller. She says that possible signs of life have already been seen within the carbon-dioxide filled atmosphere, adding that she was absolutely certain that life exists somewhere.
Venus is often described as Earth’s twin due to its similar size and structure. But their conditions couldn’t be further apart,as astronomers believe it would be impossible for humans to exist on Venus.①Positioned 67 million miles from the sun,Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system, suffering temperatures that can even melt lead. Its atmosphere also adds to the ②uninhabitable situation.
Despite this, scientists have long debated whether Venus’ clouds may host microbial(微生物的) life forms that can survive. Many scientists think that photosynthesis(光合作用) is possible on the planet’s surface as Venus receives enough solar energy to pass through its thick clouds.
However,Professor Dominic Papineau,a biologist at the University College of London, believes Dr Thaller’s views are “difficult to realistically assume”.He explained,“For life-related chemical reactions to take place, liquid water is necessary.Hence,to find extraterrestrial life,we need to find liquid water, and to find extraterrestrial fossils requires looking for special rocks that were associated with liquid water in the past.”
This makes life on Venus today difficult to realistically assume, because its surface is too hot, although Venus might have had liquid water in its past.Even still, both Professor Papineau and Dr Thaller agree that the icy moons of our solar system could also be sites of potential microbial life.NASA suggests there are 290 “traditional moons” in our solar system—excluding 462 smaller minor planets.

Imagine being able to use energy from the sun all the time, even when it’s night. That’s the idea that scientists at Caltech(California Institute of Technology) are exploring. They’re working on collecting sunlight in space and sending its energy to Earth.
Caltech’s scientists have created a special tool for this project. They call it MAPLE.MAPLE and two other devices are part of a project that was sent into space in January,2023.MAPLE’s job is to test the idea of sending energy ①wirelessly from space to Earth. We’re used to using wires to move electrical energy from one place to another. But sending energy without wires is a lot trickier.
The method used by Caltech’s scientists depends on the way waves act when they meet.Imagine two waves coming together as they travel in the same direction. If the tops of the waves line up,they combine to make a bigger wave. But if the top of one wave ②lines up with the low point of the other, the waves cancel each other out.The Caltech team has found a way to control the timing of lots of microwaves so that they can combine their power, and focus the energy in one direction. It’s a little like using a magnifying(放大的) glass to focus sunlight into a small, hot point of light.
To prove that the system could ③work,MAPLE sent energy to two devices just 30 centimeters away in space. This energy was then turned into electricity, which made two small lights light up.Next,MAPLE sent energy all the way down to a lab at Caltech. The scientists were able to detect the energy, proving that it’s possible to send solar energy to Earth from space.
Dr.Hajimiri, one of the project’s leaders, thinks that one day,the system could be extremely useful, bringing energy to places that need it,all over the world. He believes that in the future,we’ll be able to send energy to remote regions and areas destroyed by war or natural disasters.
5.What is the challenge in Caltech’s project with MAPLE
A.Solar energy detection.
B.Wireless energy delivery.
C.Sending devices into space.
D.Using wires to move electricity.
6.How does the Caltech team concentrate solar power

75 years after humans successfully put their first object into space,it’s much easier to launch a satellite, but a lot messier once we’re up there. 1 There are around 5,000 satellites in orbit with fewer than half actually working. When a satellite stops functioning,it keeps orbiting at very high speeds, making a great threat for the useful ones.
So space sustainability has become a big concern. 2 One suggested solution is to ①refuel the dead satellites and bring them back to life.Another concept is to use a robot with four arms to catch a dead satellite before pulling it into the atmosphere to burn it up.
3 Operating a robot from hundreds of miles away is tough. And the world hasn’t yet reached a consensus(共识) on why we should clear the space junk and there are no real rules that govern how we work out there.
First why should we keep things clean in orbit We use satellites to check the weather, find our way around, and for financial purposes.Space data gives us not just beautiful pictures of the earth, but also information about climate change, natural disasters and other things that can help humans with ②earthbound challenges. 4
Then how can we humans think as one big community Governments should make powerful panies ought to engage in shared practices and scientists are expected to think up practical methods. 5 Only in this way can we keep those orbital highways open for the next generation and beyond before they are deadly blocked by space junk.
A.They provide services closely related to our life.
B.This is hard both technically and politically, though.
C.Anyway,we should ③quicken the pace of clearing up.
D.Space is getting increasingly crowded and dangerous.

Thirty years ago Chicago professor James S.Coleman showed that parental involvement ③mattered far more in determining school success than any quality of the formal education system.Across a wide range of subject areas,in literature, science and reading,Coleman estimated that the parent was twice as powerful as the school in determining achievement at age fourteen.Psychologist Lawrence Steinberg, who recently completed a six-year study of 20,000 teenagers in nine different communities, confirms the importance of parents.Steinberg shows that one out of three parents is “seriously disengaged” from his or her adolescent’s education, and this is the primary reason why so many American students perform below their potential and below students in other rich countries.
A weight of evidence now demonstrates obvious links between absentee parents and a wide range of behavioral and emotional problems in children.A 1997 study of 90,000 teenagers—the Add Health Project undertaken(承担) by the Carolina Population Center and the Teenage Health Program at the University of Minnesota—found that youngsters are less likely to get depressed, use drugs or become involved in crime when they spent significant time with their parents. This study found that the mere physical presence of a parent in the home after school,at dinner and at bedtime significantly reduces the incidence of risky behavior among teenagers.
