For most people,a minor wound will be relatively harmless. After some time the wound will heal and disappear without leaving any visible evidence on the skin. But it is not so simple for everybody.Diabetics(糖尿病患者) and elderly people with reduced blood circulation may have far greater issues when it comes to wound healing. However, scientists have introduced a new weapon against such extreme wound reactions.
Swedish scientists from Chalmers University of Technology have developed a technology which can stimulate wound healing so that it can happen more rapidly. The technique involves electrifying the skin.“Long-standing wounds make up a severe problem that we do not hear very much about,” says Associate Professor Maria Asplund from Chalmers University of Technology, who ①headed the project.“We have now found a method that can make wounds heal up to three times faster, which could be a ②gamechanger for elderly people and diabetics, who often have wounds that cannot heal.”
To test this, the Chalmers researchers made a kind of biochip(生物芯片) on which they grew skin cells. They then made small wounds in the artificial skin and tested how fast the wound healing happened when they either passed electricity through the chip or did not.The results showed the healing process happening three times faster in the presence of electricity.
The scientists will now receive funds to continue their research beyond the lab.“At the moment we are investigating how different skin cells react to electrical stimulation to take a step closer to realistic wounds,” says Asplund.“We aim to develop a concept that allows us to examine wounds and ③personalize the electrical stimulation to individual wound types. We are convinced that this is the way to help people with slow-healing wounds.”

“John Cotter’s Losing Music is a powerful addition to the classic memoir(自传),” said Gretchen Cherington in The Millions. The first-time author has a strange disease that causes severe hearing loss, and Cotter shows well how destructive(破坏性的) the condition can be.Music first began disappearing, then the sound of the ocean.Beginning when he was 30,a ringing in his ears came and went, sometimes becoming so loud that it was painful. As his condition got worse significantly,he found how the loss of normal hearing separated him quickly from the whole world of pleasure.“The feeling is like losing life’s colour.” After detailing how he fell into complete despair, his “①hard-hitting,beautiful,②deep-going” book also reveals how he managed to rediscover a certain sense of satisfaction again.
“The most memorable sections in Losing Music are about Cotter’s daily struggles,” said Lisa Zeidner in The Washington Post.As a poet and essayist who was working as a part-time writing professor when his hearing troubles began,“he is lyrical about sounds we take for granted:rain beating windows,③old-fashioned heating hissing(嘶嘶响),a cat drinking water.” Still,“he reserves his most passionate writing for music,” providing ④poetically precise descriptions of much of the music he has loved, and connecting the loss of those experiences to the loneliness of being deaf.By 33,his hearing was gone.Hearing aids and medication helped begin a partial improvement.
“Cotter ultimately finds the best hope for a life without music:to get right with silence,” said Melissa Holbrook Pierson in The Wall Street Journal. There can be no happy ending in a book about hearing loss, but in writing it,he “turned difficulty into quiet success”. Losing Music comes closest to capturing what’s behind music “by nearly being music itself”.Even though his hearing has failed him,“evidence that Cotter’s ear is still keen for the beautiful tune of language sings from every page.”
5.What do we know about Cotter from paragraph 1
A.Losing Music is his first work.
B.He knows well about his illness.
C.The ringing in his ears was like music.
D.He drives away loneliness by writing.

B.His position as a professor.
C.His daily hardship and effort.
D.His detailed style of writing.
7.How does Cotter finally deal with his illness
A.He tries his best to cure it.
B.He comes to terms with it.
C.He ignores the inconvenience of it.
D.He collects evidence about it.

When John Todd was a child,he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems.A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older,John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college,John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria(细菌) Which kinds of fish can eat ①cancer-causing chemicals With the right combination of animals and plants,he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did.He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge(污泥).First,he constructed a series of clear ②fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited.Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks,John added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks,it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years,John has taken on many big jobs.He developed a greenhouse-like facility that treated sewage(污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou,a city in southeast China.
“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does.“Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says.“You put organisms in new relationships and observe what’s happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to ③self-repair.”

Using hypodermic needles to deliver drugs has been common for more than a century. The past hundred years have seen all manner of medical advances, yet the needle has stayed mostly unchanged.Although now available in a variety of different sizes,it remains a hollow(中空的),pointy tube. With luck, that may soon change.Researchers around the world are looking for ways to ease the ①passage of needles into the skin. Many have been inspired by nature.
An obvious source of ideas has been mosquitoes, which manage to take their blood meals almost ②painlessly.One reason is that the insects release anaesthetic(麻醉的) chemicals when they first puncture(刺穿) the skin. But another has to do with the shape and action of their mouthparts.
The point of a mosquito’s mouthparts is serrated (锯齿状的) and softer at its tip.The insect stretches the skin of its target before biting, and shakes its mouthparts quickly as it pushes it in.All of this helps to reduce the force needed to puncture the skin. One paper, published in 2020 by a group of researchers in America and China, found that a ③mosquito-inspired needle required 27% less force than an ordinary one.And less puncture force means less pain.
Mosquito-inspired needles might also be useful for delicate procedures such as biopsies(活组织检查).A paper from the University of Michigan, also published in 2020,found that the lower puncture force led to less movement of the sampling area, ensuring that the needles were guided accurately to the area, rather than missing the target.
For now, such devices remain restricted to labs. But there is a big market for better needles.According to the World Health Organization, around 16bn injections were given in 2018.With one person in four saying they suffer from trypanophobia,or a fear of needles, the savings on stickers and sweets for the brave souls who roll up their sleeves would be considerable.
5.What contributes to mosquitoes’ getting blood without causing pain
A.The sound they make before biting.
B.The special shape of their mouthparts.
C.The high speed of their action.
D.The small size of their mouthparts.
6.What can we learn about the mosquito-inspired needles from the text
A. They have been put on the market.
B.They require more puncture force than the ordinary ones.
C.They cause less pain when getting through the skin.
D.The lower puncture force may cause them to miss the target.
7.What is the author’s attitude towards the mosquito-inspired needles
A.Unclear. B.Tolerant. C.Doubtful. D.Positive.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) geolocation(人工智能定位技术) solutions are changing the way researchers track and ①monitor wildlife, enabling more powerful conservation efforts. These systems use advanced sensors, satellite imagery, and machine learning algorithms(算法) to gather real-time data on animal movements, habitat preferences, and migration patterns. 1
Traditional tracking methods often rely on ②non-automatic tracking or inconvenient necklace-like systems, which may cause stress and ③discomfort to the animals. 2 The devices can work as tags and the camera traps can be set up remotely, which decreases human impact on wildlife.
In addition,AI-powered devices collect and analyze data precisely.Through their assistance, scientists can gain insights into habitat choices and evaluate the effect of global warming on wild animal locations. 3 For example,by analyzing the collected data, conservationists can promote targeted habitat restoration efforts according to the patterns and connections they discovered with the help of AI geolocation devices.
4 By monitoring animals’ behavioral changes in real-time,researchers can quickly detect signs of environmental issues.Sudden changes in an animal’s movements could indicate threats or problems.Researchers can then respond immediately, potentially saving the animal’s life.
Sharing geolocation data through online platforms can also help raise awareness about protecting endangered species. 5 This help them feel more connected to the issues wildlife face in habitats. The bond promotes a sense of responsibility among individuals and encourages them to contribute to wildlife conservation efforts through various means, such as donations, volunteer work, and so on.
A.This knowledge enables them to make accurate and efficient decisions.
B.However,AI tracking does not require disturbing contact with the animals.
C.AI monitoring needs fewer battery replacements than the traditional methods.
D.The solutions have offered the following key benefits to wildlife conservation.
E.Directly engaging with conservation efforts gives people a first-hand experience.

Imagine living in a cool, green city alive with parks and threaded with footpaths, bike lanes and buses which transport people to shops, schools and service centers in a matter of minutes.
This fancy dream is behind the idea of the 15-minute city, where all basic needs and services are within a quarter of an hour’s reach, improving public health and lowering vehicle emissions.
Artificial intelligence could help urban planners realize that vision faster, with a new study from researchers at Tsinghua University in China demonstrating how machine learning can generate more efficient spatial layouts(空间布局) than humans can.
Automation scientist Zheng Yu and his colleagues wanted to find new solutions to improve our cities which are fast becoming blocked. They developed an AI system to tackle the tough tasks of urban planning and found it can produce urban plans that outperform human designs by about 50 percent in three aspects:access to services, green spaces and traffic levels.
Starting small,Zheng’s team tasked their model with designing the urban area only a few square kilometers in size (about 3×3 blocks). After two days of training, the AI system searched for the ideal road designs and land use to fit with the concept of the 15-minute city and local planning policies and needs.
While the AI model has some capabilities that could extend its use for planning larger urban areas, designing entire cities will be more complex.Drafting a neighborhood consisting of 4×4 blocks contains twice as many planning decisions as designing 3×3 blocks, the researchers said. But automating even a few steps in the planning process can save huge amounts of time:the AI model can compute in seconds certain tasks that take human planners between 50 to 100 minutes to work through.
Rather than AI replacing people,Zheng and his colleagues think their AI system can work as an “assistant” to urban planners, who could generate concept designs optimized(优化) by the system, and reviewed, adjusted and evaluated by human experts based on community feedback.
4.According to the text, which of the following is a benefit of the “15-minute city” concept
A. Better public health.
B.Zero vehicle emissions.
C.Decreased access to green spaces.
D.Slow and convenient service.
5.Which major issue in cities did Zheng Yu and his team want to address
A. High levels of pollution.
B.Limited access to public services.
C.Shortage of affordable housing.
D.Rising crowding and traffic problems.
6.What can be concluded from the text about the AI model’s capabilities
A. It can design entire cities easily.
B.It takes longer to train for greener urban areas.
C.It can complete tasks much faster than human planners.
D.It is limited to planning only a few square kilometers at a time.
7.What’s the best title for this passage
A. Designing Better Cities with AI
B.The 15-Minute City:A Dream or Reality
C.Improving Public Health with Greener Cities
D.The Role of Machine Learning in Urban Design

As people hold different views on almost anything,we live in a ①judgmental world where people are quick to point out the faults and imperfections of others, yet seem ②unaware of their own. Some misguided souls believe they have a duty to help you to be a better person by telling you what a failure you really are first and then offering suggestions as to how you can improve.
So what is the possible solution to criticism
If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves,STOP.Make a conscious decision rather than focus on the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes. You are more likely to offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue of yours,a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive.Instead, simply reply with “OK”.This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.
It is important to remain emotionally attached to what the other person is saying,to listen without feeling,to be a sensible(理智的) observer. In fact, there is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself:Did I make a mistake Could I have done better Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand If so,how can I improve myself As for chronic(习惯性的) ③criticizers:It is important to set strict boundary with them.Remove yourself from their presence when necessary.
In any case, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.

More than 400 athletes across a variety of sports, ages and levels of experience were questioned for the study by sports psychology experts from Staffordshire University and Manchester Metropolitan University. The findings reveal that athletes’ belief systems—specifically irrational(非理性的) beliefs—are related to poorer self-confidence,and in turn, greater competitive anxiety and depressive symptoms.
“Phrases that reflect self-depreciating(贬低) beliefs such as ‘If I lose,I’m a failure’ or ‘If I face ①setbacks,it shows how stupid I am’ are warning signs,” said the authors.Paul Mansell,Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Staffordshire University, said,“Despite the psychological benefits of physical activity, studies frequently report poor mental health in athletes, which may be exacerbated by adversities, such as injury,②deselection,and performance pressure. We investigated athletes’ beliefs, how they view stress, their levels of self-confidence and put all the data together to work out what might predict psychological well-being.We found irrational beliefs to be a core reason for symptoms of poor mental health in athletes.”
This is the first known study that has examined irrational beliefs,self-confidence,and the psychological well-being of athletes all together.Irrational beliefs are extreme, rigid, and illogical ideas that people hold. For example,a person might believe that they “must” get what they want,or that just because they have failed, they are a “complete failure”.
“We can all work to help athletes develop ③mindsets that help them deal with the challenges of sport and life.By encouraging rational and logical beliefs about performance,we can help athletes to stay healthy amidst the high demands of competitive sport,” said Paul Mansell.
The authors propose Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) as an effective tool for protecting self-confidence.REBT helps athletes to challenge these self-depreciating beliefs and develop beliefs that are more helpful and healthy. For example, rather than believing “I am a failure if I fail”,this might be countered with “Failing is not ideal, but it does not mean that I am a failure”.
5.What did the study centre on
A. Physical health of athletes.
B.The competition state of athletes.
C.Psychological health of athletes.
D.Competition habits of athletes.
6.Which can best replace the underlined word “exacerbated” in paragraph 2
A.Worsened. B.Examined.
C.Promoted. D.Recognized.
7.Which of the following is a sign of irrational beliefs

C.It is a world full of competition.
D.What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.

The taste of champagne as we know it could change beyond recognition in the coming years. As global temperatures continue to rise, the climate crisis poses a threat to the production of wine.
The supply of Chardonnay,Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, among other popular ①wine-making grapes,is at risk.By 2050,about 85% of the lands on which good wine grapes are grown will no longer produce suitable wine grapes.
Grapes are susceptible to even the most subtle changes in weather.“Wine is kind of the canary(金丝雀) in the coal mine for climate change impacts on agriculture because so much of the character of wine is tied to the local climate,” said Benjamin Cook,a climate scientist. He published a paper in 2020 on how grape variety can resist climate change.
He adds that scientists are “seeing pretty much all plants, including wine grapevines, start their lifecycle in the growing season earlier, and often finish up earlier. You basically ripen your fruit earlier and typically you harvest earlier.” In the Champagne region of France, these changes can alter the distinctive personalities of grapes grown there.“If it ②matures too quickly, the ratio of acidity and sugar might be different,” Cook said.
A grape’s qualities are dependent on its environment. With a warming planet,it’s harder to produce grapes that make champagne taste sweeter and boozier(酒精浓度高的).For instance,in a Chardonnay grape, what you’re looking for in a cooler climate is generally an apple taste, whereas in a warmer climate the warmth can change the grape’s qualities to be more like a tropical fruit,or even banana-like.
Farmers and winemakers are picking good places to grow grapes, like Belgium and Sweden, which benefit from warmer weather. This helps with making wine in changing climates.
The ③downside for those Swedish winemakers If those champagne grapes aren’t grown in the Champagne region of France, you can’t call it champagne, which is a protected designation of origin.
1.How does the climate change threaten the production of wine
A. By increasing the diversity of grapes.
B.By increasing the cost of wine making.
C.By intensifying the competition between winemakers.
D.By reducing the production of suitable wine-making grapes.
2.What does the underlined word “susceptible” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Sensitive. B.Resistant.
C.Adaptable. D.Tolerant.
3.What can we learn from the text
A. The lifecycle of wine grapevines is becoming longer.
B.A Chardonnay grape may taste like banana in cooler climate.
C.Grapes’ ratio of acidity and sugar influences champagne’s taste.
D.Wine making in Sweden faces the same challenge as that in France.
4.Which can be the best title of the text

Urban agriculture, the practice of farming within the restrictions of a city,is becoming increasingly popular and is viewed as a sustainable alternative to big industrial farms.By some estimates, between 20% and 30% of the global urban population engages in some form of urban agriculture. But until recently, its carbon footprint remains understudied.
Using data from 73 ①low-tech city farms, community gardens and personal plots of land,Newell and his team compared the average carbon emissions of food produced at low-tech urban agriculture sites to those of conventionally grown crops. The team found that because of urban gardens’ relatively low yields, along with the energy used in constructing the planting beds,big-city spuds(马铃薯) were significantly more ②carbon-intensive than commercially grown ones. This held true even when the researchers factored in emissions from transporting commercially grown produce to often distant grocery stores. That doesn’t mean that growing vegetables in big cities is totally bad, however.“Urban farming is great,” if imperfect, says Carola Grebitus,a food choice expert. It can be a powerful tool for job creation and education, she says, and a good way to introduce fresh produce to urban “food deserts” where healthy fruit and vegetables are hard to come by.Community gardens can also provide a place to connect with nature, and the added green space can reduce the risks of heat and flooding.
Conscious of these benefits,Newell’s team highlighted several ways to make urban agriculture more sustainable. One option is to be selective about what crops are grown. For instance, tomatoes grown in the soil of open-air urban plots had a lower carbon intensity than tomatoes grown in conventional greenhouses.Another strategy is to rely on existing constructions.Include old structures into a new garden’s design instead of taking down old buildings. Finally, take the local climate, water quality and soil into account.Growing plants that are ③ill-suited to an area requires more water, energy and pesticides(杀虫剂),all of which affect the environment.
5.What can we know about urban agriculture from paragraph 1
A.It is thoroughly researched.
B.It is welcomed by city people.
C.It is environmentally friendly.
D.It is limited to industrial farms.
6.How does the author explain the reason for urban agriculture’s higher carbon intensity
A.By making a comparison. B.By telling a story.
C.By giving a definition. D.By using a quote.
7.According to Carola, what is a benefit of urban agriculture
A.It adds variety to urban people’s diet.
B.It provides recreational opportunities.
C.It strengthens the bonds of community.
D.It helps to contain drought and flooding.
8.What is recommended to make urban agriculture more sustainable

语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。文章主要探讨了全球气候变化对葡萄酒产业,特别是香槟酒生产的影响。
1.D [细节理解题。根据第二段中的“By 2050,about 85% of the lands on which good wine grapes are grown will no longer produce suitable wine grapes.”
根据画线词后的“Wine is kind of the canary(金丝雀) in the coal mine for climate change impacts on agriculture because so much of the character of wine is tied to the local climate”可知,气候学家认为对于气候变化的影响,葡萄酒就像煤矿里的金丝雀,因为其特性与气候密切相关。由此可推测,葡萄容易受到气候的影响,也就是说葡萄对于气候的变化很敏感。故选A。]
3.C [推理判断题。根据第四段中的“If it matures too quickly, the ratio of acidity and sugar might be different”和第五段中的“With a warming planet,it’s harder to produce grapes that make champagne taste sweeter and boozier(酒精浓度高的).”可推知,葡萄的酸度和甜度的比例会影响香槟酒的味道。故选C。]
4.C [标题归纳题。通读全文尤其根据第一段中的“As global temperatures continue to rise, the climate crisis poses a threat to the production of wine.”和最后一段中的“If those champagne grapes aren’t grown in the Champagne region of France, you can’t call it champagne...”

根据最后一段中“Finally, take the local climate, water quality and soil into account.Growing plants that are ill suited to an area requires more water, energy and pesticides(杀虫剂),all of which affect the environment.”可知,文章建议种植适合当地环境的植物,这样可以使城市农业更加可持续发展。故选D。]
