C. Methods of controlling the feelings.
【答案】18. A 19. B 20. A
【原文】W: On average, American women cry about 3.5 times each month, while American men cry about 1.9 times each month. These figures may take some of us by surprise, especially as our society has often looked at crying — particularly by men — as a sign of weakness.
As a phenomenon that is unique to humans, crying is a natural response to a range of emotions, from deep sadness to extreme happiness and joy. But is crying good for your health The answer appears to be yes. Medical benefits of crying have been known as far back as the Classical era. Thinkers and physicians of ancient Greece and Rome believed that tears work like a magic medicine that could purify us. Today’s psychological thought largely agrees, emphasizing the role of crying as a mechanism that allows us to release stress and emotional pain.
Crying is important, largely because keeping negative feelings inside can be bad for our health. Crying has also been shown to increase attachment behavior, encouraging closeness and support from friends and family.

Even if a bushfire threatened the rural Australian community of Wytaliba, Gary Wilson and his wife Julie Willis decided not to leave their wooden house. The couple had a home which was full of orphaned (孤儿) baby kangaroos to protect.
More than 10 of the baby kangaroos stayed safe inside fabric pouches that hung in the couple’s living room. Each piece of cloth looked like the opening where mother kangaroos carry their young babies. As the wild fires grew nearer, full-grown kangaroos and other wildlife that had left their care long ago came back to the house in search of protection.
Even if the couple’s house is now surrounded by burned land and vehicles, they decided to defend their home for at least 14 hours with fire extinguishers (灭火器) and water pumps. To their relief, their house had a special device on its top that sprayed water on hot ashes falling on this house. What they had been well ready for helped the building stay safe as before. So did the motherless animals.
But what was really bad was that the fire hitting the small community killed two of Wilson’s neighbors. “It was a horrible thing,” Wilson said. “The whole bush has been burnt. Most animals, such as possums, gliders, lizards and even many birds, were not fast enough to escape.”
While Wilson and Willis usually care for baby kangaroos that are rescued after their mothers are struck by vehicles, they are now welcoming an increasing number of fire orphans. Wilson said, “We didn’t have children ourselves; this is what we spend our time doing. We think it is worthy — a worthy cause — looking after our babies no matter what they are.”
24 Why did the couple stay at their wooden house
A. To defend their wooden house.
B. To protect those baby kangaroos.
C. To wait for more chances in the fire.
D. To collect more orphaned animals.
25. Why did the couple’s house stay safe
A. They had good luck.
B. They had firefighters to help.
C. They had made good preparations.
D. They had a house with solid building materials.
26. What is implied in Wilson’s words in the last paragraph
A. The couple expect to have their own time.
B. The couple think that their care is of little value.
C. The couple treat the orphaned animals as their children.
D. The couple have a preference for animals than their neighbors.
27. What is the main idea of the text
A. A couple provided a shelter for the orphaned animals.
B A couple was unwilling to leave their beloved house.
C. It was dangerous to survive when a bushfire broke out.
D. A bushfire caused great damage to a rural community.

Described as bottled poetry, wine is one of our wonderful creations. Nothing conveys that better than the great flavor of New Zealand’s wines. However, New Zealand’s wine industry struggles with issues like pesticide (杀虫剂) use, water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change impacts like droughts and disease. Fortunately, the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) program offers hope by improving the industry’s environmental practices.
First launched in 1995, SWNZ was one of the world’s first sustainability certifications for winemakers. Since then, it’s been widely adopted. Members of the program must submit annual reports and undergo independent examination. Besides its commitment to environmental health, the program also focuses on employees working in the industry, climate action, water conservation, waste reduction and soil health. Over 90% of New Zealand’s vineyards (葡萄园) participate, showing the industry’s commitment.
While only a small percentage of these vineyards are fully organic, most of them use eco-friendly pest control. For example, they cut off vines to increase airflow and sunlight to reduce diseases naturally. They remove some leaves sometimes to improve soil and save water. Besides, they turn to SWNZ for help to prevent the spread of unwanted diseases.
Wine production also causes other environmental impacts. A lot of water is needed during the process. Therefore, most of vineyards have practices to reduce water use, including recycling cleaning water and purchasing new equipment for better water use. Together with wine, lots of waste is produced in the form of grape skins, seeds and stems. Most vineyards compost (把……制成堆肥) this waste, spread it back to the earth, or turn it into feed for livestock.
New Zealand’s wine industry, though small, has global influence. In 2024, exports reached $2.1 billion, making it the country’s sixth-largest export. By taking small, consistent steps—like lighter packaging and carbon reduction—the industry aims to balance quality wine with a healthier planet. As climate challenges grow, SWNZ’s model offers lessons for industries worldwide.
28. What is the SWNZ program working on
A. Creating best wine worldwide.
B. Employing workers for wineyards.
C. Awarding certificates to skillful winemakers.
D. Controlling the environmental impacts of winemaking.
29. What do we know about the vineyards from the examples in paragraph 3
A. Most of them are fully organic.
B. Eco-friendly methods are widely used.
C. The farmers gain more profits.
D. Unwanted diseases have been totally prevented.
30. Which practice has been widely adopted in New Zealand
A. Using water more efficiently.
B. Applying pesticide to reduce diseases.
C. Reducing waste in wine production.
D. Raising money for buying new equipment.
31. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Influence of New Zealand’s Winemakers
B. Benefits from New Zealand’s Wine Industry
C. Developmental challenges of Wine Production
D. Sustainable Solutions in New Zealand’s Wine Industry
【答案】28. D 29. B 30. A 31. D

One billion people globally are not accessible to basic transportation, and they live over two kilometers from a usable road. This isolation causes severe problems: dangerous journeys to school or clinics, and difficulty reaching markets. Building footbridges is a key solution, but identifying where to build a bridge remains a major challenge, especially in Africa where about 60% of rivers and waterways are unmapped.
To solve this, Bridges to Prosperity, a nonprofit organization that builds footbridges in isolated communities across the world, partnered with others to build WaterNet. It is an AI model designed to use available satellite imagery and data to map missing waterways. It has already identified three times the number of known mapped rivers globally, adding over 124 million kilometers of previously unseen rivers and streams.
The model is publicly available and open-source for other organizations and governments to use, and mapping rivers is only the first step. Bridges to Prosperity uses WaterNet along with another tool, Fika Map, which models travel times to assess how long it takes someone to walk to a school or clinic, providing accurate data they lack for rural areas. This combined data empowers governments to make smarter, evidence-based infrastructure (基础设施) investments.
While WaterNet was designed with rural bridges in mind, its potential is much broader. Unlike high-powered AI language models, it runs on a lightweight, affordable, and energy-efficient system. However, it also has a restraint. “People think AI knows everything,” said Nivi Sharma, CEO of Bridges to Prosperity. “But if you don’t train it right, it can exclude entire populations. AI is a support system, not a substitute for judgment.”
WaterNet has already made a significant impact, but it is the beginning of a broader movement. “As weather patterns change, rivers become unpredictable. The communities most affected are often the least visible. That has to change. I believe that WaterNet doesn’t sit in some academic corner of the Internet, but it really changes the mainstream maps and how we think about rural communities,” said Sharma.
32. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To lead into the main topic of the text.
B. To present the challenges humans face.
C. To introduce the advantages of building footbridges.
D. To provide some technical knowledge of WaterNet.
33. How does WaterNet help in building rural bridges
A. By offering good advice to the experts.
B. By making smart evidence-based decisions.
C. By providing accurate data to map waterways.
D. By solving the problems caused by weather changes.
34. What does the underlined word “restraint” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Preference. B. Limitation.
C. Level. D. Measure.
35. What can we infer about WaterNet from Sharma’s words in the last paragraph
A. It will become a more influential tool.
B. It is a result of an academic research.
C. It has become mainstream and scientific.
D. It will change weather patterns in the end.

【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m excited to share my experience in the school debate competition last Friday afternoon. The theme was “Youth in Bloom, Truth through Debate”, which perfectly captured the spirit of critical thinking and youthful energy.
Our team argued against the motion “Technology makes teenagers lonelier”. As the third speaker, I presented our arguments by using statistics and real-life examples. The most thrilling part was the free debate session, where both sides exchanged sharp arguments. After heated discussions, we won by a narrow margin! This experience taught me the power of teamwork and logical reasoning. It was an unforgettable experience for me!
What’s new with you Looking forward to your reply!

Three years ago, I was annoyed with my weight. Every day, I had to face the same battle — waking up breathless, and feeling terrible as I climbed the stairs to my classroom. How I wanted to become thin and healthy like the girls in gym class. Yet every attempt to exercise ended in failure. My gym shoes gathered dust in the closet as I returned to old habits of late-night snacks and sitting for a long time on the couch.
One cold morning, as I returned home slowly after a disappointing jog where I’d hardly reached the park gate, I noticed an elderly woman practicing Tai Chi in the community garden. Her movements were wonderful and powerful even if she looked thin and weak.
“Good morning!” I greeted her, trying to hide my own red cheeks and labored breathing. She stopped her routine and smiled, the wrinkles on her face looking like the pages of a well-read book. “Ah, I remember that look,” she said, pointing to my water bottle and gym shorts. “It is the same look of someone who has been fighting the same battle for too long.”
I nodded with shame as she invited me to sit on the bench beside her. “Let me share a secret,” she said calmly. “Thirty years ago, I was diagnosed with a heart condition. The doctors said I needed to make a change or I’ll be at the risk of losing my life. I was still young and I wasn’t ready to die yet.” Her story went on with the rhythm of her breathing exercises. She spoke of starting small — ten minutes of walking daily, and then gradually increasing distance.
“What kept you going ” I asked when she paused, my eyes fixed on her weathered hands that now moved very flexibly. “Habit,” she answered firmly. “Not perfection. Some days I walked through rain, others through snow. I didn’t measure success by the scale but by how many stairs I could climb without pause. And slowly, my body began to change — not just in size, but in strength and reaction.”

【答案】
Her words hit me as I watched her practice Tai Chi. That evening I took out my dusty sneakers, not with grand ambitions, but with a quiet determination. I began where she suggested — ten minutes of walking daily, gradually incorporating short jogging intervals. I also replaced my sugary snacks with fruits kept conveniently in my backpack. Several months later, I noticed some small changes in myself. I got enough energy that could carry me through school days. What’s more, I had the confidence to complete the training tasks given by my teacher during PE class.
Last Saturday morning, I was running when I met the elderly woman again. I stopped and greeted her. “You have become a completely different person. You look so healthy and dynamic. What’s really impressive is that you have a thin figure,” she said. I told her what I had been doing after she shared her experience. It was her words that did have an influence on me. Thanks to the elderly woman, I realized that the small choices we make every day really make a difference in our life. What’s more important, I have been offering the same advice to those in the same trouble.绝密★启用前
