At age 14, McKenna “Mak” Whitham has become the youngest player to appear in a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match. Off the coast of Donegal lies Owey Island, a car-free place that was last inhabited (居住) full-time in the 1970s. Today, it’s being revived by locals and adventurous travelers seeking a simpler life. Accessible only by private boat, the island has no electricity or running water, offering a sharp contrast to modern living.
In its golden age, Owey was home to around 100 residents and 30 families. However, the attraction of the mainland’s conveniences caused it to be deserted in 1977. The island remained inactive for over 25 years.
It was not until pioneering locals like Paul Cowan decided to restore it that things began to change. Paul Cowan spent his teenage years there. Cowan and his family had moved to Owey in the 1970s to avoid the political and social unrest in Belfast. In the early 2000s, he and his brother returned to fix up their family home and build new houses. Their efforts inspired other descendants of the island to restore the island to its former honor. Now, around 20 homes stand, with a seasonal community of 20-30 people living there during warmer months.
The island’s isolation (隔绝) attracts those seeking a break from modern life. Visitors can stay at the Owey Island Cottage Hostel or camp nearby. If you live near a body of water in the northern place, you likely have heard of your local polar bear club, usually made up of a group of strong swimmers who take part in cold water swimming. Submerging (浸入) in cold water dates back to ancient civilizations, with the first documented evidence appearing in an Egyptian text in 3,000 BC. Fast forward to modern times, a group of swimmers founded the first cold water swimming organization in the U.S. in 1903. Today, the Coney Island Polar Bear Club still holds weekly ocean swims from November to April.
Cold-water swimmers say that swimming in icy water is good for you. It helps reduce muscle pain, improves sleep, and increases your energy. But what does the evidence say A growing body of research proves that jumping into cold water is good for you, especially for your feeling and how well your brain works.
In a study published this year in the journal Physiology & Behavior, 13 healthy subjects submerged themselves in 10-degree Celsius water for 10 minutes, three times per week. Researchers measured participants’ (参与者) mental performance, self-reported well-being, sleep quality and worry. They found participants’ thinking processing speed and mental flexibility improved over the four weeks of the study. Participants said they had less trouble sleeping and felt less worried.
Two earlier studies back up these findings. In the first, participants reported a significant decrease in negative emotions like tension, anger, depression, tiredness and confusion after a 20-minute swim in cold ocean water. In the second study, participants who submerged in a cold bath for five minutes reported feeling more active, attentive, proud and inspired.
What’s going on here Researchers don’t exactly know. However, it’s important to know that cold-water swimming can be risky. It can lead to problems such as getting too cold, breathing too quickly, and having muscle cramps (痉挛). It’s important never to swim in a body of open water alone, and to check with your doctor first if you have any ongoing health conditions.

If you live near a body of water in the northern place, you likely have heard of your local polar bear club, usually made up of a group of strong swimmers who take part in cold water swimming. Submerging (浸入) in cold water dates back to ancient civilizations, with the first documented evidence appearing in an Egyptian text in 3,000 BC. Fast forward to modern times, a group of swimmers founded the first cold water swimming organization in the U.S. in 1903. Today, the Coney Island Polar Bear Club still holds weekly ocean swims from November to April.
Cold-water swimmers say that swimming in icy water is good for you. It helps reduce muscle pain, improves sleep, and increases your energy. But what does the evidence say A growing body of research proves that jumping into cold water is good for you, especially for your feeling and how well your brain works.
In a study published this year in the journal Physiology & Behavior, 13 healthy subjects submerged themselves in 10-degree Celsius water for 10 minutes, three times per week. Researchers measured participants’ (参与者) mental performance, self-reported well-being, sleep quality and worry. They found participants’ thinking processing speed and mental flexibility improved over the four weeks of the study. Participants said they had less trouble sleeping and felt less worried.
Two earlier studies back up these findings. In the first, participants reported a significant decrease in negative emotions like tension, anger, depression, tiredness and confusion after a 20-minute swim in cold ocean water. In the second study, participants who submerged in a cold bath for five minutes reported feeling more active, attentive, proud and inspired.
