Big storms and tornadoes hit Oklahoma late at night on Sunday. They threw cars around and uprooted trees and sent debris (碎片) flying through the air. Many people got hurt, and 11 needed to go to the hospital. Much of the damage was reported in the state capital of Oklahoma City, near the state’s center, but it happened in other places too. The early morning storms set off tornado warnings that extended (延伸) south to the Arkansas state line. Rain caused floods, and lightning started a house fire. More than 99,000 Oklahoma homes and stores lost power during the overnight storms.
Richard Thompson, the main weather forecaster in Oklahoma, thought six or more tornadoes would hit the state overnight. He told people to get ready for more rain and severe weather on Monday.
“We’re not done yet,” he said. A warning for tornadoes was in place for central and southeast Oklahoma until 8 pm on Sunday. Other places were warned about thunderstorms and floods.
In the town of Choctaw, east of Oklahoma City, firefighters and police checked houses to see if anyone was hurt. The town’s mayor, Chad Allcox, said a whole neighborhood was destroyed with power lines down everywhere and lots of roads blocked, which made it hard to find and help people. As recovery efforts began, Oklahoma would face more challenges ahead with people coming together to rebuild and support those affected by the storms.

Last year, hundreds of people’ spent good money on an experience that they knew would include crowds, discomfort and danger. M any would become sick, due to the extreme cold and low air pressure, and a few would even lose their lives. However, by the end of the trip many were already planning a return to Qomolangma. For these people, climbing Qomolangma is an experience like no other, making some feel weak and others, powerful.
British mountain climber George Mallory wrote of climbing Qomolangma, “What we get from this adventure is pure joy. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means.” He added, “There are a thousand reasons to turn around and only one to keep going. You really have to focus on the one reason that’s most important and unique to you.”
With the majority of attempts to climb Qomolangma resulting either in total success or failure, is there also a scientific reason behind this risk-taking Recent studies indicate that risk-taking may be part of human nature, with some of us more likely to take risks than others. Psychologist Frank Farley has spent years studying people who jump out of planes and drive fast cars, as well as those who climb Qomolangma. He refers to the personalities of these people as “Type T”, with the “T” standing for “thrill”. Speaking to the LA Times about the “Type T” personalities, Farley said, “They’ll say, ‘I’m not taking risks, I’m an expert...’ They don’t want to die and they don’t expect to die.”
With this in mind, is climbing Qomolangma worth the risks It’s totally up to you.
12. Why did many Qomolangma climbers decide to try again

C. They were unwilling to waste the money used.
D. They thought climbing Qomolangma was an easy task.
13. What’s George Mallory’s attitude towards climbing Qomolangma
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
14. According to Frank Farley, which of the following best describes “Type T” people
A. Sports-loving. B. Quick-minded. C. Strong-willed. D. Thrill-seeking;
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. Life’s Meaning From Risk-Taking B. Climbing Qomolangma Worth the Risk

When I entered the vet hospital, the vet helper was helping another customer. She knew what kind of cat food I needed to buy and asked if I wanted a partial case (半箱) or a full case. Thinking I was always busy, I decided to buy a full one.
Just then another new customer hurried in and rushed to the front of the vet helper. The vet helper asked him to wait after me. Since I wasn’t in a hurry, I told the helper to serve the gentleman first. I could go to the pharmacy and give them time to do the paperwork while I was gone.
The helper said, “Thanks, that would be great!”
The gentleman said sorry for his cutting in the line just now because of something important to do, and said, “You should go first— you were here before me.”
“No worries, you go right ahead. My pleasure,” I said.

I was walking to our local pharmacy (药房) when I suddenly remembered I needed to buy a special type of cat food from the vet (兽医) for my daughter’s cat. She couldn’t afford to pay for the expensive food so I had to pay for it. To be honest, paying $300 a month for the cat food made me feel stressed.
He jokingly replied “Wow, how can I thank you ”
Not really thinking, I blurted out (脱口而出), “You could buy me a bag of cat food. Haha.” I laughed and left.

【答案】参考范文:
I went back to the vet’s after about ten minutes. I walked up to the vet helper, and she was waiting with a huge grin. “You don’t have to pay! That gentleman bought all your cat food for you!” “What the !” I was so surprised. “Did he know how much it cost before he decided to buy it ” “Yes! He asked first. I thanked him many times for you! I also asked him why he bought the food for you. He said your kindness just now helped him a lot and you asked him to do so, too. He wanted to pass on your kindness.”
Holding the cat food paid by the gentleman, I felt good inside. The gentleman’s action not only made it easier for me to pay for the cat food but also made me believe in the kindness of people. On my way home, I couldn’t stop smiling, thinking about how being polite had led to such a nice surprise. I decided that I would keep looking for opportunities to help others, no matter how small, to keep the cycle of kindness going.
