Talking therapies for anxiety and depression
Talking therapies, or psychological therapies, are effective treatments delivered by fully trained and qualified experts. They can help if you’re struggling with things like feelings of depression, excessive worry, social anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
· You can access talking therapies for free on the National Health Service (NHS) in UK.
· You can refer yourself directly to a talking therapies service without recommendation.
· Help is available in person, by video, over the phone or as an online course.
What can talking therapies help with
You do not need to have a diagnosed mental health problem first. Getting support as soon as you start having difficulties can help to reduce their impact.
You may be:
· feeling anxious
· feeling low and hopeless
· having panic attacks
· finding it hard to cope with work, life or relationships
· struggling with flashbacks and nightmares about things from your past
· feeling stressed
Other things that talking therapies can help with include:
· worrying a lot
· excessive thoughts or behaviours
· fear social situations
· being afraid of things, such as spiders, flying or heights
Types of talking therapies
There are a range of evidence-based talking therapies. Which therapy you are offered depends on which one has been shown to be most helpful for your symptoms.
Examples of talking therapies include:
· guided self-help-where a therapist coaches you as you work through a self-help course in your own time, either using a workbook or an online course
· cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)-based on the idea that thoughts, feelings, what we do, and how our bodies feel physically, are all connected. CBT helps you notice and challenge thoughts or behaviours to help you feel better.
· interpersonal therapy (IPT) or dynamic interpersonal therapy (DIT)-therapies that look at the link between your depression and your relationships
Talking therapies can also help if you have mental health problems resulting from other conditions, such as diabetes (糖尿病), cancer, long-term pain.
Talking therapies are oftered in different ways, including:
· using a self-help workbook with the support of a therapist
· as an online course
· one-to-one sessions either in person, over the phone or as a video consultation
· in a group
1. You are recommended talking therapics if you are________.

C. lacking in thoughts or behaviours
D. afraid of getting along with others
2. During the therapy, which of the following might happen
A. You conduct a self-help course all by yourself.

At 18, British writer Lara Prior-Palmer chose an extraordinary path: the Mongol Derby, an extremely challenging 1,000-kilometer horse race across Mongolia’s wilderness.
In her first book, Rough Magic, Prior-Palmer describes her ride in all its pain boredom, and ultimate success. “Somehow,” she writes at the beginning, “against all the odds, I won a race labeled the longest and toughest in the world and became the youngest person, and first female, ever to have done so.” Yet her story avoids overused phrases of self-praise, balancing vivid landscapes with honest words about painful saddle (马鞍) wounds and bad-smelling outdoor toilets, making it an unusual pleasure to read.
For much of the book, she and her horses — 25 in all, a new horse every 40 km — drag slowly with great effort across a landscape that resists Prior-Palmer’s sight. She’s especially gifted with metaphor — when it rains, “there appears a smooth path behind us, as though the earth is water and we have been fish, until now,” and the clouds are “piled high as if lining up for a funeral”. For every gorgeous metaphor, there’s a pair of wet riding trousers or a toilet that is only “a smelly hole in the ground with wet boards above to stop you from slipping into it”.
By the end of Rough Magic, Prior-Palmer is amazed by the land around her. “Living in desertion,” she writes, “the land knows what I don’t, no one can carve a story into earth or sky. The wind sweeps the clouds away, the stage clears for another day.” She keeps competing, while trying to persuade herself to be more patient, and humbler. Her final hope is not to win the race — though she wants that, too — but to let the race make her free.
Rough Magic seems to stand as proof that she succeeded. And as I read it from the skyless comfort of my couch, I briefly felt a bit freer, too.
4. How did Prior-Palmer feel about her performance in Mongol Derby
A. Unsatisfied. B. Pitiful. C. Expected. D. Proud.
5. What is the language style of Rough Magic
A. Plain. B. Humorous. C. Descriptive. D. Logical.
6. Why does the land impress Prior Palmer
A. It blocks heavy winds. B. It mirrors human evolution.
C. It shows competitive spirits. D. It varies with time and weather.
7. What is Rough Magic about
A. A bittersweet journey. B. A well-grounded theory.
C. An inspiring fairy tale. D. An impressive landscape.
C
People pursuing perfection and those valuing being on time often don’t see eye to eye in the workplace. But according to a recent study, it is better to deliver a good-enough project on schedule rather than perfecting it through procrastination.
Researchers surveyed thousands of people in the U.S. and U.K, including managers and others whose jobs included evaluating others. They presented participants with the same examples of work, and then asked them to rate it. But first, they mentioned whether it was either submitted early, right at the deadline or late.
Respondents who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than those who were told the same work was early or on time. The study also found there wasn’t much benefit to submitting work early since evaluators tended to rank work submitted before and at the deadline as the same quality. Furthermore, it didn’t matter how late the work was submitted, with one day or one week delays viewed just as negatively and that remained the case if the employee gave their manager advance warning.
A field experiment was conducted in a high school in China that had students grade pieces of art in a staged contest. The art was on a piece of paper that also included the date it was submitted. Even though the kids were told to ignore all other details on the paper other than the art itself, the works submitted after the deadline received lower grades. That study made the broader point that it didn’t really matter who set the deadline. In the eyes of the evaluator, any miss was a meaningful miss.
However, the reason behind the missed deadline mattered, researchers found. If it was due to forces beyond an employee’s control, evaluators didn’t end up with as negative a view of the work as they did when the reason was one within their control. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know,” Maglio says. “That seems to be one of the few situations in which people cut you a break.”
8. What does the underlined word “procrastination” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Delay. B. Editing. C. Teamwork. D. Reviewing.
9. What can be concluded from the research result
A. Minimal delays get better evaluations. B. Preannounced delays get positive feedback.
C. Late submissions are more negatively judged. D. Submitting work early means a lot in evaluations.
10. What does the author want to show by mentioning the field experiment in China
A. Kids judge submissions more objectively. B. The art itself rather than other details counts.
C. A peer-to-peer evaluation can be informative. D. The finding holds true across age and culture.
11. What can be implied from the last paragraph
A. Employees get unfair reviews. B. A set deadline is absolutely unchangeable.
C. Bosses should care about employees. D. Employees should report unavoidable misses.
D
Nations with large amounts of wind and solar in their power grids (电网) are particularly exposed to rising energy bills due to sharp increases in the gas price. The relationship between decarbonization and swings in prices has been a controversial (有争议的) issue as governments consider clean energy strategies, but an analysis of power prices has now provided evidence to inform the debate.
Vast quantities of wind and solar capacity have been introduced across Europe in recent years, but these power sources are intermittent, generating electricity only when winds blow or the sky is cloudless.
Gas power plants, which can be switched on and off relatively easily, are frequently relied on to provide power when renewable generation is low. But gas is often the most expensive source of power, and electricity market rules mean the most expensive generator sets the price for the entire market.
Raul Bajo-Buenestado at the University of Navarra and his colleagues found nations with more wind and solar in their power systems were more vulnerable (易受影响) to natural gas price shocks. Spain, for example, has large volumes of solar power and is particularly sensitive to power price changes. “If you have natural gas, wind and solar, this is going to make the perfect cocktail for you to be vulnerable,” says Bajo-Buenestado.
It is the need for flexible generation alongside wind and solar that is the issue. Bajo-Buenestado points out that other nations with low-carbon power grids, such as Norway and France, rely on hydropower and nuclear technology, which are reliable generators. “We don’t see a clear correlation between decarbonization and sensitivity to natural gas price changes,” he says.
Solving the problem will require nations to replace gas as the back-up fuel of choice. One answer is for grid operators to push the power system to become better able to absorb peaks and valleys in generation. “The underlying message is that getting a flexible system is now as important as building renewables,” says Michael Grubb at University College London.
12. What does the controversial issue in the first paragraph refer to
A. How rising gas prices will affect power grids.
B. Which countries may face higher energy bills.
C. What should be included in clean energy strategies.
D. Whether carbon cuts are linked to varying power prices.
13. What does the underlined word “intermittent” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Faulty. B. Costly. C. Unstable. D. Inefficient.
14. Why is natural gas still needed in high-renewable-energy systems
A. It helps lower energy costs.
B. It can quickly fill gaps in supply.
C. It ensures consistent market prices.
D. It is a key driver of energy innovation.
15. What might be an ideal combination of power sources
A. Solar and gas. B. Nuclear and gas.
C. Solar and wind. D. Nuclear and wind.

Orienteering: My Life-long Passion
Orienteering is a timed event across a mostly natural landscape, where participants navigate through a series of checkpoints along the way. The route from one checkpoint to the next isn’t marked. ___16___ Beyond mere exercise, orienteering builds physical endurance and mental sharpness, with each move requiring split-second judgement.
At the age of ten my family moved to a new town and I changed to a new school. In my new class there was an orienteer and I joined him in the practices. Now 50 years later, I still do orienteering!
I have always enjoyed nature. Growing up in a village on the forest’s edge, I spent my childhood in nature, playing, walking, and skiing. ___17___
When I started with orienteering, I was the first in our family. But soon afterwards my parents realized that instead of just driving me to the practices and competitions, they could just as well participate themselves. We have always been out walking in the forest, but their participation opened up a new dimension. ___18___ With a lot of discussions driving to the competitions, about anything, and the analysis after the race, our family bonds grew stronger.
___19___ In most cases the competitions are in new areas where I have never been and would never go to otherwise, each offering unique landscapes to explore.
But maybe the best part is that each race is a new challenge. No one runs the same course twice, so each time there are new challenges. Orienteering is for life. ___20___
A. Nature offers countless things for us to explore.
B. The event also requires accurate map-reading skills.
C. I hope I will be able to continue for many years to come.
D. Each participant decides the best route on the run or walk.
E. I think that orienteering is a perfect activity for the family.
F. I also appreciate how orienteering connects us to different places.
G. Such experiences laid the foundation for my love of outdoor activities.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend was different from any other friends they had brought home. With a yellowish coat and tiny brown spots dropped across her nose, she was the cutest puppy I had ever seen. When my husband got home that evening, she ran to him right away and after dinner climbed into his lap to watch TV. By now the girls were both begging me to keep her.
She had no collar (颈圈) or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Resides, her owners should have watched her more closely. I tried to find seemingly logical reasons to explain my behavior.
By the end of the week, she was part of our family. We had named the puppy Molly. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time for the girls to take responsibility for another life, so they would learn the nurturing skills they’d need if they decided to become mommies when they grew up.
The following week, something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was asking for the return of a lost beagle puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately seeking.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸相应位置作答。
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad.

【46题答案】
【答案】Dear Jenny,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. I’d choose “Environmental Protection Around Us”.
Environmental issues are part of our daily life. The column can share small acts like saving water, recycling, or planting trees — things every student can relate to. It’ll make us more aware of our role in protecting the planet. By writing about these, we practice English while spreading green ideas. It may even inspire class activities, linking studies to real change. This mix of learning and action makes it a great choice.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad. I didn’t want to spoil the perfect days. Molly brought us so much joy and laughter with her playful and adorable traits. The girls took their responsibility as pet owners seriously, ensuring that the cute creature had plenty of food, water, and toys. But at the sight of the heartwarming scene where my daughters were happily playing with the puppy, I couldn’t bear the thought of causing someone else pain and heartache just because of my sheer selfishness and avoidance. After days of struggle, I finally made up my mind and dialed the number in the ad to arrange a meeting with the owners.
The girls were overwhelmingly stricken when I told them the whole story. But in the end, they decided to go with me. The moment Molly met the family, she sprinted towards the couple, who were obviously overcome with the joy and touch of regaining. They expressed deep gratitude for our taking care of their “beloved treasure”. It was a bittersweet moment as we waved goodbyes. As we walked away, tears streamed down the girls’ faces, and I gave them a hug and wiped away their tears. “I know it is hard, but you make it.” I was so proud of them for their responsibility, empathy, and the ability to make the right choice even when it was difficult. ”
