When Craig Miller moved to the Catskill mountains in New York after retirement, the journalist wanted to get away from traffic jams and wildfires and enjoy a quieter pace of life. Yet, one year into his stay, he became his town’s newest volunteer firefighter.
Driving around town and noticing recruitment (招聘) signs, he decided to dig further. “Speaking to fire chiefs, I realized they are in crisis since more than 60% of all firefighters in the US are volunteers, and rural areas can’t get young people to join,” he says. “The chief was trying to recruit me, saying that it didn’t matter about my age.” Miller realized that volunteering would be a good way to become a part of the community, so he signed up to train as a firefighter.
“The training owned my life for three months, with night classes and Saturday sessions covering everything from operating a panel to throwing ladders (梯子),” he says. “We started every session with a ‘donning drill(穿钻)’, racing to put 18k of equipment on in under a minute. We sometimes had to do it four or five times and I was staggering (摇晃) by the end. It immediately improved my fitness.”
Averaging 60 callouts a year, Miller has experienced his hair- raising moments. “I’ve been on car fires and wildfires, which are stubborn and difficult. Cars can also give off some terrible smokes when they are melting,” he says. “The worst feeling is when you get paged, show up and you’re the only one at the station. That happened once when I was early into my training and it was terrifying thinking I would have to lead the callout.”
The greatest impact has come from helping people during some of the worst moments of their lives. “It’s massively rewarding to put yourself out there for strangers and they are so grateful for us, too,” he says. Despite initially thinking he would stop volunteering at 70, Miller is now committed to carrying on. “One of the essential things in life is to feel that your efforts have meaning and that you are making a difference. I’ll keep going as long as I’m able. It gets in your blood.” he says.
24.Why did Miller volunteer as a firefighter
A.He desired a sense of belonging. B.He found his retirement life dull.
C.He was an adventurous journalist. D.He needed materials for his reports.
25.What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A.A fire rescue operation. B.The firefighting training.
C.A recipe for building muscle. D.The challenges facing firefighters.
26.What made Miller feel worst
A.He got his car burnt in a fire. B.He had more callouts to cope with.
C.He was unprepared for the emergency. D.He had to carry out the operation alone.
27.What motivates Miller to continue volunteering
A.He is full of energy. B.He can encounter strangers.
C.He finds a purpose in his life. D.He desires gratitude from others.

From the swinging rhythms of the 1950s to the autotuned(自动调音)device of today, pop music has undergone a remarkable transformation. But what exactly has changed, and how can we measure it
Researchers identify two major “melodic (旋律的) revolutions” in pop music history: one in 1975 and another in 2000. These pivotal moments mark significant shifts in the structure and complexity of hit melodies. Interestingly, these musical milestones aren’t perfectly in line with the revolutions in harmony (和声) and tone color (音色), suggesting that different aspects of music may evolve at different rates.
During these revolutions, melodies have generally become simpler, both in terms of pitch (音高) and rhythm. Modern pop hits tend to use a smaller range of notes and simpler rhythmic patterns compared to those from the 1950s and 60s. At the same time, there was a dramatic increase in “note density(音符密度)”—the number of notes squeezed into each second of music. This means that while today’s pop melodies might be simpler in structure, they’re often delivered more rapidly, creating a sense of energy and urgency that wasn’t as common in earlier decades.
There are several interesting possibilities for what is happening. One theory suggests that as other aspects of music production—like complex electronic beats and richly layered instrumentation—have become more complex, melodies have had to simplify to maintain a balance. Another explanation points to the changing landscape of music consumption. In an era of streaming and social media, where listeners can skip to the next song in seconds, there may be more pressure to create tunes that grab attention instantly. This could favor simpler, more repetitive melodies that are easy to remember and sing along to.
Relationships between different musical features have also become stronger in recent years. For example, in post-2000 pop hits, melodies with more notes per second tend to be less complex in terms of pitch variety. This suggests that modern pop songwriting may be following stricter patterns than in the past.
28. What do the underlined words “pivotal moments” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Revolutionary approaches. B.Significant achievements. C.Turning points. D.Historical events.
29. What change has taken place in pop music over the years
A.Bigger range of pitch. B.Denser notes. C.More complex rhythms. D.More diverse tone colors.
30.Which of the following may contribute to the revolution of pop music
A.The difficulty in creating catchier tunes. B.The conventional patterns to enjoy music.
C.The convenience of switching between songs. D.The need to balance increasingly intense beats.
31.What’s the purpose of the text
A.To prove a viewpoint. B.To remove some doubts.
C.To illustrate a principle. D.To analyze a phenomenon.

In Portugal, near the town of Alqueva, lies Europe’s largest artificial lake, home to an innovative floating solar-power plant developed by EDP, a leading renewable energy company. Despite initial doubt about the high costs and potential issues of floating solar technology, this project represents the sector’s fulfillment and readiness for expansion.
In this first stage of the project at Alqueva, engineers have stationed some 12,000 PV modules (光伏组件) on floating platforms made from partially recycled plastic and locally sourced soft wood. These are connected to an energy-storage system combining batteries and are combined with the hydroelectric dam’s power station.
Floating solar projects do face plenty of challenges. The equipment has to be water-, wave-, wind- and storm-resistant, which adds complexity and cost. The fish in lakes attract plenty of birds, whose droppings can block the sun. To deal with this, engineers for the project at Alqueva have developed remote-controlled cleaning robots and are working on autonomous ones.
Yet floating solar projects also enjoy several advantages. When located at existing hydroelectric dams they do not require any additional land and can be connected to the grid (电网) without the multi-year wait which is common for solar projects. The cooling effect of being on water especially boosts the efficiency of the modules, with studies suggesting gains of between 5% and 15% over land-based PV, while the shade they produce slows the water evaporation (蒸发) of the lake.
EDP views floating solar as a cornerstone of its renewable energy strategy. The initial 5 megawatts (MW兆瓦) capacity at Alqueva may seem modest, but it’s just the beginning. The company is planning a second stage, which will see an additional 70MW capacity by 2025. According to Wood Mackenzie, a leading consultancy, floating solar technology could deliver up to 60,000MW of renewable energy globally by 2031. “This may pale in comparison to the 1,600,000MW of solar capacity installed as of last year. But every bit counts,” he added.
32.Which of the following best describes the EDP project
A.Economical and eco-friendly. B.Innovative and labor-saving.
C.Land-saving and efficient. D.Challenging and experimental.
33.Why are cleaning robots needed
A.They prevent water damage. B.They protect modules.
C.They reduce manual costs. D.They remove bird waste.
34.What advantage of floating solar projects is highlighted
A.They use local soft wood only. B.They reduce water loss via shading.
C.They create new habitats for wildlife. D.They need no new power stations.
35.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Floating Solar Ready to Shine. B.The Dawn of Renewable Energy.
C.Solar Power or Hydroelectric Power. D.5MW to 75MW: Alqueva’s Solar Leap.

Born in the Netherlands in 1883, Van Gogh had always been interested in art and tried to work 56 a professional painter. His early works 57 (characterize) by dark colors until 1886, 58 his brother, Theo, invited him to come to live in Paris, where the bright colors of Impressionist art greatly influenced his style.
Later, Van Gogh moved to southern France. In 1888, after suffering a mental breakdown, he stayed in a hospital where he painted over 20 versions of 59 view from his window, which covered different times and weather conditions, 60 (create) only one night view. He wrote to Theo: “This morning I saw the countryside… with nothing but the morning star.” This “star” was actually Venus, which inspired him to create his 61 (influence) painting, The Starry Night.
The Starry Night (1889) describes a dramatic cypress tree stretching upward like flames, imaginary village scenery, and a swirling sky 62 (fill) with celestial bodies. Though unrealistically adding a village, the painting reveals 63 Van Gogh saw through his “mind’s eye”. The exhibition hall was filled with bright lights. All the finalists of the “Traditional Paper-cutting Competition” were proudly showing their works. I,16-year-old Mia, placed my Butterfly Garden on the display table. My hands were shaking. I used Grandma’s favorite scissors (剪刀) to cut this red paper. There were many carefully-made butterflies on it. Each one showed how many hours I spent practicing.
I could hear Grandma’s voice in my head. “Paper-cutting isn’t just about making pretty shapes,” she often said with a smile. “It’s like writing a story with scissors. Every cut tells a part of our family, our life, and our love for this art.” She would sit beside me for hours, showing me how to fold the paper just right and guiding my hand as I made each cut. “Look, Mia,” she’d say, “this curve (曲线) is like a river in our village, and these tiny holes are the stars we see at night.” I listened carefully, feeling the magic of our family’s stories coming to life on the paper.
When the judges walked around to check all the works, I was really nervous. I saw them stop at some other pieces. My throat went dry, and I started biting my lip anxiously. But I still thought my Butterfly Garden was the best. The big butterfly in the middle was for Grandma, who taught me everything. The smaller ones around it were like the memories we shared.
When the host walked onto the stage to say who won, my heart was beating so fast. I felt like it could jump out of my chest. I was thinking about standing on the stage, getting the medal. But then I heard the host say, “The winner of the competition is... Lucy with her Ballet Dream!” For a moment, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. My Butterfly Garden looked so simple and not special at all compared to her shiny, high-tech paper-cut. I looked at Grandma in the crowd. She was smiling, her eyes bright and proud, as if she wanted to tell me something important.

Campus Classic Recitation Activity
Last Friday, our school successfully held the “Campus Classic Recitation Activity” in the school lecture hall.
The activity aimed to promote students’ appreciation of classic literature and improve their language skills. During the event, students from different grades took turns to the stage, reciting classic poems and essays in both Chinese and English with passion. Their wonderful performances brought the beauty of the classics to life.
The activity received an enthusiastic response. Students said they not only had a deeper understanding of the classics but also were inspired to explore more literary works. It is hoped that more such activities will be held in the future to enrich our campus cultural life.
读后续写范文:
I stood there frozen as Lucy was handed the golden medal. She walked over to me with a bright smile, her eyes sparkling with genuine warmth. "Mia," she said softly, "your Butterfly Garden is truly amazing. I was so moved by it. The way you captured the memories and love in each butterfly is incredible. " Her words felt like a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds of my disappointment. I looked at her, surprised and touched. "Thank you, Lucy," I managed to say, my voice trembling a little. "You really think so " She nodded earnestly. "I do. And don't ever forget that true art comes from the heart, not just from winning a competition."
Suddenly, a warm hand touched my shoulder. It was Grandma. She wrapped her arms around me, and I could feel her warmth and strength. With a gentle smile on the face, she said, “Mia, remember what I always told you Paper-cutting is about sharing our stories and love. You did that perfectly. Don’t let a medal define your worth. Keep on cutting, and your stories will touch more hearts.” I was deeply moved by her words and decided to keep practicing and sharing our family’s stories through paper-cutting.
