Donnie almost didn’t go to his niece’s fifth birthday party last August. He was worn out after working long hours. But the party was being held at Scales and Tails Utah, a reptile center in suburban Salt Lake City. Since childhood, Donnie has been crazy about reptiles (爬行动物). “They’re now the closest thing we have to a dinosaur,” he says. So, he went with his wife.
When they arrived, they were led to a small indoor area with a pool of water surrounded by nine-foot-tall viewing windows. Inside was a 150-pound alligator (短吻鳄) named Darth. He swam around the pool (游泳池) before resting his head on a platform.
For safety’s sake, Bull, his trainer, wanted Darth off the platform before beginning the show. Entering the enclosure (围场), she held out an arm and yelled “Back!” Unexpectedly, Darth opened his jaw to reveal all of his teeth. Bull placed her left hand under his jaw and tried to move him backward, a technical move she’d performed before. But today, Darth wasn’t having it. He rolled his head to the side, surprising Bull. Her hand slipped out from under his jaw, and Bull was dragged into the pool.
Outside the enclosure, some wondered if this was part of the show. Not Donnie. Sensing something was wrong, he threw open the glass door and climbed inside. “Jump on his back!” Bull shouted. Donnie jumped from the platform to sit on the alligator’s back, pressing down with all of his 180-pound body weight.
“Push your fists into the top of his nose!” said Bull. Donnie did as he was told. For the next minute or two, they waited. When Darth finally eased his bite, Bull quickly pulled her hand out of his mouth and was helped by a bystander.
That left Donnie alone on the top of the alligator. Bull shouted: “Move your hands from his nose to his neck! Sit up, then push off from his back to stand and get to the platform!” Donnie cautiously sat up, and jumped off Darth, moving out of the enclosure.
Bull’s hands were treated promptly. Though recovered, she hasn’t stopped thinking about Donnie. Aside from a few scratches, Donnie was more shaken than injured. Still, he says, “I’m just glad I was there.”

Millions of Americans sit behind a computer screen, chained to their desk all day because the vast majority of stable, high-paying professions are “office jobs”. However, having a successful career does not require you to sit behind a desk and plug away at a computer all day.
In fact, there are a large number of non-desk jobs in a variety of industries that are growing and offering workers a direct path to the middle class, according to a new analysis of labor market information from CareerBuilder. While most of the highest-paying non-desk jobs are medical professions that require a doctoral or professional degree, there are 170 non-desk professions that pay $15 per hour or more, do not require a bachelor’s degree for a typical entry-level position, and have seen at least 6% job growth over the last four years.
“The US workforce has gradually changed to office-based work because of the rise of the professional service economy and productivity gains from information technology,” Rosemary Haefner, Vice President of Human Resources Officer at CareerBuilder, said in a statement. “But some of the healthiest areas of job growth year after year are in middle-skill professions that don’t require workers to sit in front of computer monitors and phones for 40 hours a week.”
Here are the top-paying jobs that don’t require you to work at a desk in various kinds — none of which require a four-year college degree — and their hourly salary and growth rate since 2018: professional assistants: $26.57, 14%; elevator repairers: $37.81, 6%; mechanical engineering technicians: $25.19, 10%; and electromechanical technicians: $24.68, 8%.
While they tend to pay less than traditional office jobs, non-desk professions provide a variety of benefits. Haefner points to a 2021 CareerBuilder survey that discovered workers who don’t work at a desk all day are less likely to complain about their work environment and less likely to report being overweight.
28. What does the underlined phrase “plug away” in the first paragraph probably mean
A. Turn off a switch. B. Look for a job.

31. What are the benefits of non-desk jobs
A. Higher income. B. Longer lifespan.

A growing number of people are using ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence program, to create books for sale. Although sales have so far been slow, human writers are worried that ChatGPT-created books might hurt the writing and publishing industry.
Until recently, Brett Schickler never imagined he could be a published author. But after learning about the ChatGPT artificial intelligence program, Brett decided that he had a good chance. Using the AI software, Brett created a 30-page illustrated children’s e-book in a few hours. He offered it for sale through Amazon’s self-publishing section and it made Brett less than $100. While that may not sound like much, it’s enough to drive him to create other books using the software.
There were over 200 e-books in Amazon’s Kindle store up to mid-February that say ChatGPT is a writer or a co-writer. And the number is rising daily. But due to the nature of ChatGPT and many writers’ failure to admit that they have used it, it is nearly impossible to get a full count of how many e-books may be written by AI.
Some professional writers are showing their concern. “This is something we really need to be concerned about. These books will flood the market and a lot of authors are going to be out of work,” said Mary Rasenberger, the executive director of the Authors Guild, a writer’s group, “The ability to create with AI could turn book writing from an art into a commodity, a kind of simple raw material that is bought and sold.”
Not everyone is impressed by the software. Mark Dawson, who has reportedly sold millions of copies of books, was quick to call ChatGPT-assisted novels dull. Dawson said, “Merit is important in the book business. It plays a part in how books are recommended to other readers. If a book gets bad reviews because the writing is dull, then its quickly going to sink to the bottom.”
32. Why is the example of Brett Schickler mentioned in the text
A. To share the trick of making a fortune by writing.
B. To introduce how to create e-books by using ChatGPT.
C. To predict the future application of ChatGPT in writing.
D. To show how ChatGPT influences people in creating books.
33. What does Mary Rasenberger worry about
A. E-books’ influence on professional writers.
B. Readers’ difficulty in finding high-quality novels.
C. ChatGPT’s impact on the book publishing industry.
D. Authors’ failure to create novels without ChatGPT.
34. Which of the following does Mark Dawson believe is key to the success of a book
A. The high quality of the writing.
B. The mixed reviews from the readers.
C. The assistance of popular AI programs.
D. The number of books an author has sold.
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To promote the use of AI.
B. To discuss a new phenomenon.
C. To sing praises for human beings’ wisdom.
D. To show the latest scientific development.

Dear Bill,
I’m writing to invite you to join our class’s study tour to the art gallery this weekend. The main purpose of this activity is to broaden our cultural horizons and deepen our appreciation of art, which we believe will be an enriching experience for all of us.
We plan to gather at the school gate at 8 a.m. on Saturday and then take a bus to the gallery. Once there, we’ll have a guided tour where we can learn about the history and techniques behind the artworks. What excites me most is that we’ll have a discussion session afterward, during which we can share our thoughts and feelings about what we’ve seen.
I sincerely hope you can come and join us in this wonderful opportunity.
Looking forward to your reply!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
