Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White's hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(礼堂).It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town's people. Many people tried out each year for it but so many were turned away.It could only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice.Last year she went to Mrs Owens—her music teacher to ask to join in the performance.Without letting her sing,Mrs Owens took a look at Emily's body and said,"Child, you just don't fit.Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too."
Without singing a single note,Emily was sent back through the door of the choral(合唱)room.Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher,Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn't want to be rejected again,so she hesitated a little about it.As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr Butler called,"Emily, you're next." Although kind of nervous,Emily did as Mr Butler told her to do.Mr Butler sat by the piano to accompany Emily. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn't sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted.By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

Three months ago,her left arm was seriously injured in a car accident. After the medical treatment, she began to recover slowly. She practiced over and over again in order to regain her dancing skills.
"Hi,Mary," in rushed her friend Jessica."How is your arm?Is it going to influence your performance?"
"I guess it can be tolerated for I am to win the match." said Mary with a determined look.
"Admirable! But I hear that a girl called Linda is really gifted and strong. She can be your real well﹣matched e on!"
After Jessica left,Mary decided to practice her most difficult spin."If I don't try harder,I won't grasp this chance." She thought. But her arm began to hurt, making her worried."Mary, what makes you think you have a chance tonight?" she said to herself. After the pain was gone, she continued to warm up.
A slim girl hurried in and put down an equipment bag on the chair. Then, she took out her dance dress quickly and put it on skillfully.Seeing Mary, she smiled politely and said "Hi,I'm Linda.I am the next one!" Mary nodded in reply but felt uncomfortable. "This is just my competitor.Because of her,I may lose the game tonight." Her mind was wandering when Linda let out a scream,"Oh,I can't find my music tape!" Linda searched her bag but in vain. "It may be missing on the way." With these words, she then rushed out.

A Simple Thank
I have been in the teaching profession more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr.Rowe.I was lucky enough to co﹣teach fourth grade with him.
Mr.Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him.He could perform miracles, like the one her performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw.Steven couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly,he didn't like himself.
The first day he walked into Mr.Rowe's classroom,he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbook onto the floor.
Mr.Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away.Nevertheless,Mr.Rowe welcomed him: "Hi,Steven.I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr.Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.
So,while Mr.Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school,it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes,Mr.Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball during the break. "Hey,Steven," Mr.Rowe commented, "You are good at pitching.Let me show you my secret trick." Mr.Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform.Steven learned fast and did quite well!Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball,Steven sat as closer to Mr.Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked,Steven lit up;he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However,he got the answer right! He said, with Mr.Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.
That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr.Rowe more and more with each passing day.

4.I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs,so when the annual winter recital was canceled,I was disappointed.I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however,to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. "You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living," my mom suggested brightly. "I'm sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs."
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs.Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win﹣win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days,I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.
When the much﹣anticipated day finally arrived,my family and I drove to Carriage House.Walking through the enormous double doors,we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room.Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit.At nearly every table several gray﹣haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided.Despite the conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately,we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.

5.You never know the difference you might make if you take the time to encourage someone.I gave up the idea of being a writer the summer before I started college.I'd been writing since I was five years old.My little friends wanted toys at that time, but I just wanted paper.Childhood passed and a box of short stories gave way to my middle school days.I wrote for a magazine and by the time I was in my eighth grade, half of the annual publications were written by me.Sometimes I'd dream about being a novelist, writing books that everyone might read.My dad was always sure that it would happen. When he read my poems or stories, his eyes welled up. "That's beautiful, honey," he always told me. "One day,the entire world will know what a gift you have." Those words encouraged me through high school to keep believing that writing was my calling.
But somewhere along the months of my senior year I became disappointed. The crazy injustice in this world﹣﹣bad guys getting back out on the street and doing harm again and again, changed my mind. "I'm going to be a lawyer in the future," I told my parents. My dad's face fell, but he kept his smile."Whatever you do,you'll be brilliant at it," he said to me.
One of my first classes at college was Journalism 100.One day,the professor,Bob Scheibel, assigned us a story about an apartment fire.He gave us the facts and we had a few days to write a news story.
I was sure that I had gotten the facts right when I wrote the story.I didn't expect much feedback. But a few days later,Bob Scheibel asked me to talk to him after class.Questions raced through my mind. What had I done wrong?Had I gotten the facts mixed up?Did I miss anything critical in the details?Five minutes after the class,I found myself in front of the professor. His eyes met mine with great seriousness.
Paragraph 1:
The professor asked whether I have read an article about this event on the newspapers._________
Paragraph 2:
Since then,I begin to devote myself to writing and later in the school and city writing competitions,I get numerous awards and honours.__________

The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile."I guess this is it,"he said."I' ll see you back home in a month, okay?"His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy's mother turned to the dog,"Okay,Poppy, time to go back home."

They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn't her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried."What should we do to cheer Poppy up?"asked Dad."We've tried everything."
"I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy," smiled Mom."Without anybody left in the house but us,this place could use a bit of fun.Let's get a little dog for Poppy."

I took a trip to visit New York with my dad after graduating from high school. One of the places on his list for us to visit was a "rare violin shop" since I played the violin all four years and participated in the honor orchestra as well.We made our way down the crowded streets and eventually stopped in front of a tall building.
This building was not what I pictured when I heard "rare violin shop".I'd been imagining a street﹣level shop, open to the public, with some interesting and old violins on display, maybe with a luthier (制琴师) in the back.As we walked inside, took the elevator to the sixth floor, and stood in front of an apartment,I knew something felt off.I voiced my concern to my dad as he rang the doorbell but was ignored. My dad had never been great at interpreting social standards.
We were greeted by a receptionist who asked if we had an appointment, since they were by appointment only.I wanted the ground to swallow me whole and I was instantly aware of the sweaty, summer tourist clothes we had on.My dad eagerly told them that no,we didn't but, "my daughter plays the violin with her high school orchestra and isn't that great? And we would love to just go inside and browse!Don't mind us!"
The receptionist gave him a strange look but took it in stride (泰然处之) and excused herself to talk to someone behind a door. She came back with the owner,a well﹣dressed man,who told us that since he had no other appointments right now,he would love to give us a tour!
The starting price for a violin here,we found out,was very high.He showed us around a very private﹣feeling and swanky (时髦且豪华的)﹣looking apartment, pointed out a room where he casually mentioned he would chat with Joshua Bell when he came by,and opened the most interesting two﹣person safe I've ever seen to show me several multi﹣million﹣dollar violins.

Though it is one of the faded memories of my life today, there are times when I remember his face clearly, especially his eyes.As he had yellow spots on his eyes we called him Spotty. He would have been a stray(流浪) dog, until he came to me.
I was seven years old.My dad had just got a new job in Nasik. We had moved into a rented house. It was raining very heavily on the day we moved.
It was a cold dark night. We had our meal and went to sleep.Somehow in the midnight I heard some strange sounds outside the main door.I gathered courage and looked out through the window and I was really amused with what I saw outside.
There was a small puppy lying on an old doormat which my mother had put outside the door.It was wet and trembling. At first it was difficult to see the little one.It was the yellow spots on its eyes that made me realize its presence.
It was trying to get under the doormat to avoid the cold air outside and it had managed to get in as I could see only its head outside the doormat. Was it sick or injured?
I felt pity for the poor soul.I went in and came out with an old towel.I went near the innocent one and held it in my hand and wiped the puppy till he had become dry.I took him into my room and made a bed for him with a woolen blanket and a small pillow. He seemed very healthy and comfortable in his new bed as he went to sleep immediately.
The next morning, everyone in the family came to know about the unusual guest. "Shall we keep him with us?" I questioned my mom.
Like any other parents would,my parents first totally refused my idea but my sister and I convinced them to keep Spotty.
Slowly Spotty got on with everyone and became one of the family members.

Deep in the forest, my husband and I had climbing over and crawling under the downed trees that blocked the dirt path before us. It was May, yet we walked up a snow﹣covered hill. When we noticed our jeans were wet up to our knees, it did not dampen our spirits. Not once did we say, "let's turn around." This was our vacation, and we were on an adventure. Little did we know this was the beginning of many more surprises.
The trail was marked as an easy one﹣kilometer hike, yet we were already walking a long distance. Our lightheartedness stopped when we came out into a clearing and saw a parking lot without our rental car in it. As my eyes scanned the surroundings, nothing looked familiar. My heart raced. I realized we were lost in a notional park that did not officially open for another week.
Usually, I am the calm one in the relationship, but my husband surprised me with his calmness. This did not comfort me; In fact, it heightened my fear. As we walked, I asked my husband to call for help, but there was no cell﹣phone signal in this isolated(偏僻的)area.
It was awfully quiet except for our footsteps hitting the road, and my heavy breathing. My husband suggested we conserve energy and walk slower. With each step on the road, my feet and thighs hurt while my mind raced with thoughts about people who got lost in the Canadian woods for days.
My vision sharpened. I noticed everything around me: the trees, rocks and snow. I thought we could eat the snow on the ground in case we needed water. For the first time in my life, I was ready and willing to get a ride, but we did not meet with a single car on the road. Silently, I prayed multiple times. We focused on each other, made joint decisions and connected through gratitude. We managed to stay on the main road and walked straight on.

The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December twenty﹣fifth.Quiet, that is,except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses' station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day,for people were supposed to be spending time with their families, exchanging gifts and wishes.
I was guiding nurse that day and had just done the cleanup in the waiting room.Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time,I returned to the nurses' station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas.Just then,a colleague came back and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I was surprised,"Five, how did I get five;I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room."
"Well,there are five signed in."
So I went straight out and called the first name.Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk,a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.
"Are you all sick?" I asked suspiciously.
"Yes," she said weakly and lowered her head.
"Okay," I replied, unconvinced,"Who's first?" One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the descriptions of their symptoms, things got a little vague. Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren't accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Our hospital policy, however, was not to turn away any patient,so we would see them. When I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because, there were several more critical patients, she responded,"Take your time;it's warm in here and there is a Christmas tree."

We searched the plant for a whole day,but without luck.We found nothing. As it got dark,I asked Roy to go back, but he refused and said, "I would rather sleep on the mountain tonight and continue to search tomorrow!"
I desired to go home but I lacked the courage to go back alone,so I chose to stay and help Roy put up a simple tent under a tree.It was freezing cold on the mountain and there were scores of mosquitoes, which made it impossible for us to have a good sleep. What's worse,we heard a wolf howling nearby!I was so scared.
"I heard that wolves bully (欺负) the weak and fear the strong," Roy told me. "Let's strike the shovel (铲子) and shout to scare it away!" He found a stone and started to strike the shovel. And then he shouted as he struck the shovel.Inspired,I followed him to shout loudly.
Half an hour later,I felt cold all over the body. And the cold air on the mountain made that worse. My stomach began to ache.I lay in the tent, shivering, sweating and then falling unconscious.Roy was shocked with panic. He called my name screamingly, but I just made no response. He tried to put me on his back to carry me home but without success. At last,he went out and found some tree branches and blocked up the entrance to our tent with them. Then,he ran to the direction of our village as fast as he could.
Not knowing how much time went by,I heard some sounds approaching near.I thought it was Roy but I didn't hear him saying anything. In a shock,I sat up with a rush.At that moment,my eyes had adjusted to the darkness.Through a hole of our tent,I saw two animals like dogs removing the tree branches with their mouths and claws. They were wolves!

A Run to Remember
Thirteen can be a challenging age.Not only did I have to adapt to my changing body.I also had to deal with my parents' bitter divorce,a new family and the upsetting move from my country home to a crowded suburb.
When we moved,my beloved companion,a small brown pony(小马),had to be sold.Feeling helpless and alone,I couldn't cat or sleep, and I cried all of the time.I missed my family,my home and my pony. Finally,my father, realizing how much I missed my pony, purchased an old red horse for me at a local market.
My horse,Cowboy, was without a doubt the ugliest horse in the world. He was pigeon﹣toed and knock﹣kneed. But I didn't care about his faults.I loved him beyond all reasons.
I joined a riding club and faced rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy's looks.I never let on how I felt, but deep down inside,my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance,we were quickly out of the game.I finally realized that my only chance to compete would be in the timed﹣speed events.I chose barrel racing(绕桶赛),an event in which a horse and its rider attempt to complete a triangular pattern around three barrels in the fastest time.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons.Needless to say,she didn't feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn't need to.I came in next to last.
The bitter memory of Becky's smirks(得意的笑)made me determined to beat her.For the whole next month,I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena(运动场地).We practiced for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home.On the way home I would be so tired;those five miles seemed twice as long.
All of our hard work didn't make me feel confident by the time the show came.I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the pattern of barrels, finishing the course with case.

The moon was hanging low in the South Carolina sky as Misha finished loading her truck. Then she led Gandalf to his cage in the back.It was 3 a.m.on Tuesday March 20.Misha's husband,Chuck, came out to see her off. "Don't expect to go up there and find that lost boy in the woods, because it's just not going to happen," Chuck said.As a retired firefighter he had seen more incredible things than a kid surviving three cold nights in the mountains, but he didn't want his wife to be disappointed in herself or her dog.
Three days earlier,12﹣year﹣old Michael disappeared suddenly from his troop's campsite in Doughton Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains.A massive search party had been sent out to find the boy that had been missing in the woods for three days, but there was barely a trace of the boy. They were about to lose hope when one dog.named Gandalf, stepped in.
Misha and Gandalf her two﹣year﹣old dog,had trained for a year with the South Carolina Search and Rescue Dog Association. But this was their first real job.Doughton Park was located in a bowl on the side of a mountain. It was covered with heavy forest, where slippery moss(苔藓)and waterfall spray threatened footings and thundering streams could drown out a child's cry for help.
Misha and her teammates arrived at the staging area around 7 a.m.on Tuesday, day four. The wind was coming toward them now around the shoulder of a cliff(悬崖).Gandalf was about 30 yards ahead, working the bank of the stream where it turned beneath a wall of rock.Misha saw him quickly lift his head again. Was that the sign she'd been waiting for?Gandalf ran to the left, out of sight behind the cliff face.Misha tried to climb up the track behind him.

"Hi,Mary," in rushed her friend Jessica."How is your arm?Is it going to influence your performance?"

"This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous." Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready,I took a deep breath and commenced my performance
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old .One woman got up and began to animatedly dance about the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd.I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I' m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them.It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.

【点评】读后续写的解题思路
1.通读全文,读懂原文
通读全文首先要解决好五个 W 和一个 H 的问题,即理清人物 who、地点 where、时间 when、事件 what、原因 why 及怎样发展 how.
"I'm going to miss you so much,Poppy,"said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up,hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week,Poppy didn't seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy,or even in her daily walk Her owners were sad too,but they knew their son would be back to visit.Poppy didn't.
It didn't take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box.Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box,she stopped She put her nose on it.Her tail began wagging(摆动) ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.
