第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
The popularity of achieving 10,000 steps a day indicates that many of us have welcomed the message: walking is beneficial for overall health.
This low-impact activity, requiring no special equipment beyond a sturdy pair of sneakers, improves heart health, lung capacity and weight management while helping prevent several age-related diseases, including type 2 diabetes.
In 2023, the British Journal of Sports Medicine published the results of a data analysis of ten different studies that investigated the impact of walking speed on the risk of type 2 diabetes. This study, which pooled statistics from over 500,000 people in the US, Japan, and the UK, revealed that both “fairly brisk walking” and “striding walking” were associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, independent of the time spent walking.
As time did not emerge as a significant factor, the researchers suggest that encouraging people to walk at faster speeds could improve the health benefits of walking, beyond simply increasing total walking time or hitting a specific step count.
Relationships between walking speed and the reduction of type 2 diabetes risk: Average pace 3 - 5 km/h 15 percent reduction in risk Fairly brisk pace 5 - 6.5 km/h 24 percent reduction in risk Just below jogging pace 6.5 km/h 39 percent reduction in risk The time spent walking was not a decisive factor; instead, each increase in speed of one kilometre per hour correlated with a nine percent reduction in risk. Speeds exceeding 4 km/h were associated with a lower risk of the disease.
21. What can we learn about walking from the passage?
A.It is demanding. B.It is well received.
C.It can cure heart diseases. D.It requires no equipment.
22. At what walking speed can one achieve a 24 percent reduction in the risk of type 2 diabetes?
A.3-5 km/h. B.5-6.5 km/h. C.6.5 km/h D.Above 6.5 km/h.
23. Which aspect of walking can most benefit health?
A.Equipment. B.Time. C.Speed. D.Step count.

Tim Wilson, 18, designed a special soft robot: It gives relaxing hugs. Tim’s sister frequently had trouble getting a good night’s sleep as a child. “I saw the effects of poor sleep on her life,” he says. Many of his classmates complained about similar problems. When it was time to do a high-school research project, he decided to deal with “a real need in the world”. His solution — a huggable, co-sleeping robot — brought him a First Award in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines category at Barker College in Sydney, Australia.
“Other robotic sleep aids exist. But until now, none could hug back,” Tim says. He started by building a monkey robot and went on to create a koala robot, too. Hugging the robot causes its arms to return the hugger’s hug thanks to the flexible, inflatable tubes (可充气管子) in the robot’s arms. A fiber outside the tubes works like a muscle.
His machines do more than return hugs. The robot’s stomach gently rises and falls. “It’s quite comforting,” Tim says. The robot even tries to match its “breathing” rate to the hugger’s. How A sensor (传感器) inside measures the CO breathed out by the hugger. The robot then tries to mirror how fast the user is breathing. But that part proved tricky. After all, a bedroom fan might be enough to throw off the gas levels. So it’s not always going to be mirroring the user exactly. Therefore, a nice slow breathing rate is preset.
Tim believes his robots might help people in other settings, too. Some people benefit from emotional support dogs, for example. But some places might not allow animals. In a super clean hospital, an animal may bring a risk to sick kids. “Being able to relax kids suffering from illnesses is quite a challenging thing,” Tim shares. “But my product could do it.”
24. What inspired Tim to design the robot?
A.The widespread sleep trouble. B.His desire to win a robotics competition.
C.The lack of robotic sleep aids in the market. D.His interest in studying breathing patterns.
25. What makes Tim’s robot special compared with others?
A.Its equipment for removing CO2. B.Its soft and huggable material.
C.Its ability to monitor the heart rate. D.Its function of responding to hugs.
26. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.No animals are allowed in hospitals. B.Tim is confident about his robots’ future.
C.Emotional support dogs are no longer popular. D.More improvement is needed for the hugging robots.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Tim?
A.Responsible and flexible. B.Honest and hard-working.
C.Creative and considerate. D.Humorous and strong-willed.
C
It is rare that the CEO praises the virtues of sleeping late. According to one study, two-thirds of the CEOs of large American companies are up by 6 o’ clock, while for average Americans, the share is less than one third. For future corporate leaders, the message seems clear: you snooze (打盹), you lose.
Mike has no such ambitions. But he’s tried with early starts, and finds they bring the sense of satisfaction that comes from arriving before your editor — mailbox can be cleared and problems solved before the flood of meetings, leaving you feeling well prepared for the day ahead.
Early birds are certainly thought highly of. Rolling into the office late is unacceptable in most companies. A study published in 2020 found night owls (猫头鹰) were regarded as being “lazy” and “immature”.
However, rising early is not all upside. Those prepared to receive work when the boss arrives may be assigned more of it. Urgent tasks often come up during the day, meaning early arrivals may end up working just as late as other colleagues.
Waking before sunrise also risks making you a bore. Some early risers can’t help describing how much they got done while night owls hit the snooze button. Others go home early rather than socialize. Night owls, by contrast, let loose. In the eyes of many, late nights are the preserve of youth, while early mornings are viewed as for the elderly.
If you’d like to change your body clock, it is possible to end in disappointment, as it is largely determined by genes. Perhaps the best advice is to stop worrying about your body clock. Most people are neither early birds nor night owls, but in between, struggling both in the morning and late evening. That is why most offices operate between 9 and 5 and why they ought to have break rooms.
28. What advantage does Mike find in early starts?
A.Getting ready for the work. B.Enhancing creative thinking.
C.Reducing workload pressure. D.Improving social relationships.
29. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A.Night owls feel more stressed. B.Rising early is altogether beneficial.
C.Rising early probably means getting more work. D.One arriving early can end up in working earlier.
30. What does the underlined words “hit the snooze button” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Let out a yawn. B.Sleep a little longer.
C.Turn off the alarm. D.Get up to make breakfast.
31. What is the author’s final advice regarding the body clock?
A.Accept their genetic determination. B.Prioritize nighttime productivity.
C.Adjust it through consistent habits. D.Balance work with regular breaks.
D
“Opinion” is a word that is used carelessly today. It is used to refer to matters of taste, belief, and judgment. This casual use would probably cause little confusion if people didn’t attach too much importance to opinion. Unfortunately, most attach great importance to it. “I have as much right to my opinion as you to yours,” and “Everyone has the right to express his opinion,” are common expressions. In fact, anyone who would challenge another’s opinion is likely to be branded intolerant (心胸狭窄的).
Is that label accurate Is it intolerant to challenge another’s opinion It depends on what definition of opinion you have in mind. For example, you may ask a friend “What do you think of the new Ford cars ” And he may reply, “In my opinion, they’re ugly.” In this case, it would not only be intolerant to challenge his statement, but foolish. For it’s obvious that by opinion he means his personal preference, a matter of taste. And as the old saying goes, “It’s pointless to argue about matters of taste.”
But consider this very different use of the term. A newspaper reports that the Supreme Court has delivered its opinion in a controversial case. Obviously, the judges did not share their personal preferences, their likes and dislikes. They stated their considered judgment, carefully arrived at after thorough investigation and consideration.
Most of what is referred to as opinion falls somewhere between these two extremes. It is not an expression of taste. Nor is it careful judgment. Yet it may contain elements of both. It is a view or belief more or less casually arrived at, with or without examining the evidence
Is everyone free to express his opinion Of course, this is not only permitted, but guaranteed. We are free to act on our opinions only so long as, in doing so, we do not harm others.
32. According to the author, which of the following would be regarded as intolerant?
A.Someone who can’t put up with others’ tastes. B.Someone who values only their own opinions
C.Someone who turns a deaf ear to others’ opinions. D.Someone whose opinion harms other people.
33. What does the writer mean by the example of the new Ford cars?
A.It is foolish to criticize a famous brand like Ford. B.Personal tastes are not something to be challenged.
C.Everyone should not always agree to others’opinions. D.It is unwise to express one’s likes and dislikes in public.
34. How does considered judgment differ from personal preference?
A.It is stated by judges in the court. B.It reflects public like and dislikes.
C.It is a result of a lot of argument. D.It is based on careful thought.
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A.Should All Opinions Be Attached Importance to
B.Why Should We Never Challenge Others’Opinions
C.Are Opinions Personal Tastes or Reasoned Judgments
D.How does the Supreme Court Deliver Legal Opinions
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Our homes use a lot of energy every day. This energy is used for purposes like lighting, heating, cooling, and operating home electrical devices. 36 Actually, more than one-fourth of the world’s carbon dioxide—a gas that makes the Earth warmer—comes from the energy used in buildings. To protect our planet, we need to find ways to use less energy at home. Many people think they must buy new, expensive equipment to save energy. 37 Here are three easy things you can do.
Open a window.
When the weather is not too hot, such as in spring or at night, you don’t always need to turn on the air conditioner. Opening a window can let fresh air in and make your home feel cooler. If you open two windows on opposite sides of the room, air can flow through and make the room feel even more comfortable. 38
Use ceiling(天花板) fans.
Fans don’t make the air cooler, but they move the air around, which helps people feel cooler. 39 In some areas, using fans instead of air conditioning can reduce energy use and pollution by up to 76%. If you have a fan at home, try using it more often.
Make your roof reflect sunlight.
40 A dark roof absorbs heat, but a white or silver roof reflects the sunlight away. This helps your home stay cooler and reduces the need for air conditioning. You can talk to a builder about special reflective roof paint. It can help you save both energy and money in the long run.
A.A light roof saves much on energy bills.
B.The roof gets a lot of sunlight during the day.
C.They use much less energy than air conditioners.
D.Therefore, air conditioners are far from satisfactory.
E.However, using too much energy can cause serious problems.
F.But in fact, there are simple and low-cost ways to reduce energy use.
G.This simple action can save up to 45% of cooling energy, depending on the weather.

Shanti longed for the wooden doll in Ramu’s toy shop for weeks. The one with the red dress that shone in the sunlight. Determined to buy it, she came up with a plan. She would make jasmine garlands (茉莉花环) and sell them at her aunt’s market stand. Her best friend Jodi was eager to join her.
Early the next morning, the girls met at the jasmine garden outside of Shanti’s house. Delicate white flowers surrounded them with fresh scents. They nipped (掐) flowers with their fingers and dropped them into a basket. Then the girls sat under a mango tree and knotted the flowers into garlands. Shanti could already picture herself holding that doll, imagining the joy of owning it. “If we sell enough, we can each buy one,” she said with a smile. But Jodi shook her head. She explained that her family was struggling financially that week, and instead of using her earnings for a doll, she would buy medicine for her sick little brother, Kiran. She then picked up her garlands. “My mother is expecting me. I’ll meet you at the market.”
Later, Shanti spent the afternoon selling her garlands while waiting for Jodi. By evening, Shanti had sold all of hers, but there was still no sign of her friend. Just as Shanti was heading home, she spotted Jodi coming to the market with her garlands, looking exhausted. Jodi explained that she had been taking care of Kiran while her mother was at work, and that’s why she was late.
Shanti’s heart sank as she realized her friend wouldn’t be able to make enough money for the medicine in time. She looked at the small amount of money she had earned, which had been meant for the doll she had dreamed of for so long. In that moment, the desire for the doll seemed so insignificant. Without a second thought, she handed Jodi the money. “Keep this for Kiran’s medicine,” Shanti said softly. Jodi’s eyes were filled with gratitude, but Shanti smiled, knowing she had made the right choice.
