Ever since the first time I visited, I’ve been in love with the Sahara. But was in Morocco in 2011, to survey the situation of the Saharan cheetah (猎豹). I am a conservation biologist, and I quickly realized the importance of preserving these forgotten animals. It’s especially key in the context of climate change, to see how they adapt to drought, for instance.
The scientific community has paid little attention to Saharan wildlife. Almost nobody knows about the sand cat, for example. This beautiful animal emphasize the challenges that all ecological research faces in hostile and remote environments, such as the Sahara. My colleagues and I have published the only scientific estimate of the sand cat’s population.
It is difficult to work in such an isolated area. We must take a life of care to avoid landmines left from regional conflict, for example, by using maps and avoiding the areas that local camel keepers also avoid.
I’m the chairman of the non-governmental organization Wildlife Research and Conservation, Ciudad Real, Spain. My fieldwork group is made up of a translator, scientists and wildlife experts. Some of the members also have skills as mechanics. We usually travel in two cars, with eight to ten people in total. Our expeditions (科学考察) last for 10-20 days. We need to carry enough water, food and fuel to see us through. We try to avoid the summer, because it’s impossible to carry as much water as we would need. We leave camera traps for up to a year. But we have to check them about every four months to replace the batteries and any pieces of equipment destroyed by the environment or people.
The Sahara is one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. It’s an urgent conservation priority to document this.
4.Why did the author start to study Saharan animals
A.He recognized their significance. B.He studied climate change.
C.He wanted to publish researches. D.He loved the Saharan scenery.
5.What does the underlined word “hostile” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Unfavorable. B.Impossible. C.Unavoidable. D.Unfamiliar.
6.What is the main idea of paragraph 4
A.The research process. B.Importance of conservation.
C.The team’s composition. D.Wildlife research missions.
7.What is the intention of recording the Sahara
A.To find more landmines. B.To develop the desert.
C.To protect the ecosystem. D.To attract more scientists.
Cross-cultural communication is common in our daily life, but it’s often not easy due to many barriers. However, there are useful strategies we can use to communicate better with people from different cultures.
There are several common barriers to cross-cultural communication. Language differences top the list. When people speak different languages, they may misunderstand each other easily. Besides, different cultures have various rules about what’s polite and how to express feelings, which can also cause problems. What’s more, personal beliefs and a lack of standing in other’s shoes can make it hard for people to understand one another.
To communicate effectively across cultures, the first strategy is to show respect. We should accept cultural differences, avoid making quick judgments, and be ready to learn from others. For example, in some cultures, making eye contact is a sign of respect, while in others, it may be seen as rude. So, learning about these differences shows our respect.
Active listening is also key. When others are talking, we should give them our full attention, not just to their words but also to their body language. This helps us understand their real meaning. If something is unclear, don’t hesitate to ask questions. It’s much better to clarify doubts than to guess and possibly misunderstand.
Using visual aids like pictures or simple videos can be very helpful, too. They can make ideas easier to understand, especially when language is a barrier. Finally, patience is necessary. Building good cross-cultural communication skills takes time. We should give ourselves and others time to adapt and get along well.
By being aware of the barriers and using these strategies, we can improve our cross-cultural communication, make more friends from different cultures, and work better in diverse teams.
8.What ranks first in cross-cultural communication
A.Similar body language. B.Common cultural rules.
C.Various language types. D.Conflicting personal beliefs.
9.What is key to cross-cultural communication
A.Asking for explanations. B.Controlling body language.
C.Making quick judgments. D.Shaping cultural differences.
10.Why is patience necessary in cross-cultural communication
A.Understanding visuals needs time. B.Developing friendships needs time.
C.Fixing misunderstandings takes time. D.Boosting communication skills requires time.
11.What can we infer from the text
A.Using visual aids is not common. B.Cross-cultural communication is easy.
C.Cultural differences need highlighting. D.Realizing barriers betters communication.
In April, social media was filled with personalized action figures-style images made by the Al’s or w powered image generator. These images, which are fun and simple to create with just an account and a photo, quickly became popular trends.
However, using this image generator has privacy risks. When uploading a photo, users might unknowingly give away a lot of data. This includes meta data like EXIF data (such as the time the photo was taken and the location where it was shot), information about the device you use, data about how you use the service, and other details in the image. This data can be used to train AI models, though the AI company says it’s not using these trends to collect data on purpose.
About privacy policies and rules, in the UK and EU, data-protection laws like GDPR give strong protection. But the definition of biometric data is strict, and making a cartoon-style image from a photo may not fit this definition. In the US, privacy protection is different in each state, and the AI company’s policy doesn’t have clear rules about your image or biometric data.
The AI company says it puts user privacy and security first. Users can do things like look at, get, or delete their data, and they can choose not to let their content be used to improve the models. Different types of AI users can control if they help improve the models in their settings.
To protect your privacy, experts have some suggestions. Turn off the chat history in AI, upload images that don’t show who you are or have been changed, remove extra information from image files before uploading, don’t use prompts (指令) with private information, check your account settings again, and be careful with tools from other companies. Overall, when using Al image-making tools, it’s important to balance having fun and protecting your privacy.
12.What are the risks with image generator
A.Account theft. B.Data loss. C.Privacy leakage. D.Image change.
13.What can we infer about privacy policies
A.US has relatively strict laws. B.Rules vary in different regions.
C.Many countries have similar rules. D.The privacy policies seem popular.
14.What can the users control
A.Date viewing. B.Data processing. C.Model training data. D.Others’ data use.
15.Which may be the best title for the text
A.How To Create AI Images B.Avoid Social Media Trends
C.How To Protect Your Personal Privacy D.Reconsider Before Creating AI Images

In a small, once-lovely community, the streets and parks were filled with litter, and weeds made the once-beautiful gardens look messy. Linda, a Grade 1 1 student who loved nature, and John, a hard-working Grade 12 student, felt sad seeing their neighborhood like this. One day during summer vacation, they met at the local park and talked about how bad the environment had become. Inspired by their concern, they planned to do something to make their community beautiful again.
They spent their afternoons picking up trash from sidewalks, collecting empty bottles and cans from the park, and pulling out some small weeds. But as they tried to clean more areas, they faced big problems. Many people in the community didn’t seem to care. Some even threw more trash on the ground. And there was so much garbage, especially in an old, unused part of the community where people left broken bikes, old boxes, and plastic bags.
Linda and John didn’t give up. they decided to start a volunteer cleanup project during their free time. Since they were students, they used their school resources. They asked their art teacher for help to make colorful posters about the cleanup. They put these posters up in school hallways and the community center. They also made an announcement during the school morning meeting, inviting their classmates to join.
The day of the big cleanup finally came. Some classmates came, but there were still not enough. When they got to the messy, abandoned corner, they found it was too much for them. The broken bikes were too heavy for them to move, and they didn’t have the right tools. Tired and worried, Linda and John had to make a tough decision: stop halfway or find a way out. Finally, they decided to divide it into parts. Some students went to ask the nearby grocery store if they could borrow some ropes and small carts. Others kept picking up smaller pieces of trash around the area.

57.When hopeless, the grocery owner’s son, a classmate, heard about their problem. He told his dad what had happened, and the owner was touched by their efforts. He lent them some cars and ropes and even asked his workers to help for a while. With the extra help, they managed to move the heavy stuff. As they worked hard, more neighbors, including some parents of their classmates, were inspired and joined in. Everyone worked together, chatting and laughing while cleaning, turning the task into a heartwarming community effort.
Thanks to their determination and community unity, the neighborhood changed. The streets were clean, the parks looked lively again, and the abandoned corner became a small garden with flowers planted by the students. The cleanup not only made the community look better but also brought everyone closer. Linda and John, seeing the transformed community, swelled with pride. What moved them most was how their act, joined by dozens of volunteers, had lit a spark — one that inspired a plan to build a more beautiful community. Their work, not just beautifying spaces, had sewn bonds that would grow stronger.
