On a Friday morning in late September, the students gathered in Māhukona on the North Kohala Coast of Hawaii Island to grow taro (芋头), known as kalo in Hawaiian, a key crop in Hawaiian culture. They planned to use taro for a secret recipe (食谱) in the statewide Kalo Challenge. The nine-month program centers on traditional ways of growing taro and serves as a competition where students deliver presentations on their cultural education as well as present creative recipes for competition.
The program is now in its third year at Kohala High School. Instead of learning only in classrooms, students study on the land, earning credits for graduation through hands-on cultural education. Starting with just two students three years ago, the group has grown to 12. Every day, they visit different farms in rural Kohala to tend to plots (菜畦) with various types of kalo.
In previous Kalo Challenges, the students showed creative recipes. In the first year, they won with kalo pizza. Last year, they presented “kalo-min”, which was a creative take on saimin—a side dish of salad, a kalo-based dessert, and coconut ice cream. They even turned a kiawe tree into plates and chopsticks for the judges.
For senior Daylan Kaitoku, the program is about more than just growing food. “It’s not about what you are doing, but how you are doing it, with patience and problem-solving skills,” he says, adding that it’s almost like a college setting, where he learns about weather stations, PH testers and soil testers. “And on top of that, there’s a cultural aspect to it,” he says.
The students share their knowledge beyond their classroom. They’ve authored a children’s book and designed a card game to teach younger generations about the cultural importance of kalo. They hope what they learn today will grow into wisdom and promise for the future.
4. What is a purpose of Kalo Challenge
A. To teach students the native culture. B. To ask students to do volunteer work.
C. To encourage students to eat local food. D. To highlight the importance of teamwork.
5. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 3
A. Special praise from the teachers. B. The students’ impressive performance.
C. Difficulties the students experienced. D. The value of hands-on cultural education.
6. What can we know from Kaitoku’s words
A. He is hopeful about college life. B. He gets along well with his friends.
C. He has little time for his classes. D. He benefits a lot from the program.
7. Which of the following best describes the impact of the program
A. Uncertain. B. Powerless. C. Short-lived. D. Far-reaching.

For most people, AI is still seen as just chatbots like ChatGPT—a helpful, if imperfect, tool for answering questions. But that view may undersell the scale(规模)of change that AI is about to bring.
Adam Dorr, a researcher at the think tank RethinkX, warns that AI will reshape industries faster than we expect. He explains, “What we’re seeing with AI today follows the same historical pattern(模式)we’ve seen with every major technological change. It doesn’t take 50 or 100 years for industries to change. It takes 15 to 20years, sometimes even less. AI is already changing how work is done. It is not only used for boring, routine tasks; it is growing rapidly and may soon take over entire jobs.”
One major change is the marriage of advanced AI with robotics. For example, self-driving cars are already seen in a handful of American cities. Dorr believes that these cars will take over the country’s roads within the next two years. “And once AI is in vehicles, it won’t stop there. It will quickly move into other robotic forms, including robots that look and act like people,” Dorr says.
Most jobs aren’t single activities; they are a collection of tasks, Dorr argues, and AI will gradually chip away at them. At first, AI will help workers, improving efficiency(效率)and productivity. But as it improves, it will eliminate the need for humans and perform those tasks by itself, slowly replacing human work.
A recent interview found that 37 percent of companies using AI have already replaced human workers, with 44 percent planning layoffs in 2025, and that about two-thirds of people expect significant job losses in the next ten years because of AI.
However, some experts say that AI will not replace people but will work with them. Dr. Cain Elliott, Chief Legal Futurist at Filevine, has high hopes for AI—particularly in the legal industry, where AI has begun reshaping workflows. “AI is used as a tool to support lawyers, while humans still make the final decisions,” Elliott says.
8. How will AI affect us according to Dorr
A. It is set to create countless well-paid jobs.
B. It will lead to a sharp rise in traffic accidents.
C. It is coming for our jobs sooner than expected.
D. It will reshape our understanding of human history.
9. What does the underlined word “eliminate” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Remove. B. Support. C. Remind. D. Follow.
10. Which is the percentage of the interviewees expecting AI-driven job losses in the next ten years
A. 37%. B. 44%. C. About 67%. D. About 80%.
11. What is Elliott’s attitude towards the role of AI
A Unclear. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Concerned.

Climate change threatens the health of polar bears across the Arctic. A study published in Conservation Physiology introduces a new approach to measuring the health of polar bear populations, inspired by a well-known idea in human medicine: allostatic load, which refers to the wear and tear on the body from long-term stress.
Scientists used this idea to create a health score for polar bears in the Southern Beaufort Sea, where the polar bear population has dropped by 25-50%. The model included measures of nutritional (营养的), immune, and long-term stress.
Polar bears depend on the sea ice to hunt for food, and ice loss can lead to poorer nutritional condition. In. summer and fall, as the ice moves northward, bears in the Southern Beaufort Sea must decide whether to follow the ice into less productive hunting areas or to come onto land until the ice freezes (结冰) again. Increasingly, bears are coming ashore and eating food left by humans, which increases disease risk. Additionally, being on land means they face more human activity, such as oil and gas work, which adds extra stress.
“It’s like carrying a heavy backpack that keeps getting heavier. Soon, it becomes too much to bear,” said Sarah Teman, lead author of the study. “By studying allostatic load, we can understand how much ‘weight’ each bear is carrying, and how that affects populations.”
The scientists measured allostatic load through blood and hair samples collected from polar bears. One finding stood out to the team: adult females that spend the summer on land have higher allostatic load than those that remain on the sea ice. This may be driven by onshore food sources that fail to meet their nutritional needs, coupled with immune stress.
“This study gives us valuable insights into the factors affecting polar bears and how we can support their survival in a changing Arctic,” said Kristin Laidre, co-author of the study.
12. What has happened to the polar bears in the Southern Beaufort Sea according to the text
A. Their nutritional condition has improved.
B. Their populations have seen a notable fall.
C. They have been hunted and killed by humans.
D. They have been forced to hunt alone in winter.
13. What can be learned about the sea ice from paragraph 3
A. It is increasing disease risk. B. It is subject to the wild animals.
C. It is getting bigger in summer. D. It is key to polar bears’ survival.
14. What did Laidre try to explain about the research
A. Its process. B. Its method. C. Its background. D. Its significance.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. The long-term stress polar bears face. B. The productive hunting area in the Arctic.
C. A new way to check polar bears’ health. D. An approach to addressing climate change.

When I was 13 years old, a boy gave me a gift that changed my life. It was a simple smile.
It was early autumn, my first year of junior high school, and my old school was far away. As a result, I felt like no one knew who I was. I was very lonely and afraid to make friends with anyone. Every time I heard other students talking and laughing, I felt heartbroken. I couldn’t talk to anyone about my problems, and I didn’t want my parents to worry about me.
One day, as my classmates chatted happily with their friends, I sat at my desk, feeling a bit left out as usual. Just then, a boy I didn’t know entered the classroom. He walked past me and then turned around. He looked at me and smiled without any word. Suddenly, I felt a light and friendly touch. It made me feel happy, full of vitality and warmth.
That smile was a turning point for me. I started to talk to that boy named Jack, and gradually, he became my first and best friend in the new school. I found myself relying on him for companionship and comfort, as he was the only one who had shown me kindness.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

One day, a shy girl thanked me for my smile, saying it made her feel welcome. At that moment, I understood how a small act could brighten someone’s day. Just as Jack had lit up my world, I now hoped to pass on that light, one smile at a time.
