Signs posted up and down the school hallway didn’t let me forget: Snowball Dance-Next Friday Night! No one would be asking me, the junior high school outcast. My face was ruined, and my balance was off—I had seizures without warning. All these were making my middle school life miserable. I kept my head down as I hurried to the classroom.
I stepped into the office where my teacher Mrs Barrett waited. She learned that my grandmother had been teaching me to sew for years, but none of the other kids in the class knew it. Mrs Barrett called me up to her desk. “A lot of girls need help with changes on their dresses for the Snowball Dance. I thought you could help me after school, ” she said. “Sure,” I said. Together with Mrs Barrett, I sewed buttons, shortened some sleeves, and lengthened others.
Teresa, one of the most popular girls, came by to pick up her dress. “Roberta designed and sewed it by hand,” Mrs Barrett told her. “It’s fashionable! Thanks. You must have added this brilliant belt,” she said. “I tied ribbons to the end of a pearl necklace,” I said, looking down at my shabby shoes. Teresa didn’t get crowned at the dance, but her Snowball Dance dress was the talk of the school during the following week. Word quickly spread that I was actually good at something. Soon the girls were coming to me and Mrs Barrett for custom-made dresses. “We should organize a fashion show,” Mrs Barrett said one day. We asked the girls in the office and they all wanted to participate. We had a packed auditorium for the show.
“This fashion show was a great success, and better than any dance could be. I think we pushed back the boundaries of fashion, ” Mrs Barrett said after the fashion show.
Those weren’t the only boundaries we pushed back. Later, Mrs Barrett encouraged me to run for student body president. “The kids have known your talent, ” she said. And I was elected president of the grade. I must say it’s my luck to meet Mrs Barrett in my life.

Established game makers such as Sony and Microsoft all make money from selling games and consoles (游戏机). Free-to-play mobile games get users to make in-game flix’s plan is to add games for free and as a loss leader to win more subscribers.

As climate change affects the planet, the world is turning to seaweed (海草)as a possible settlement and play a huge role in fighting climate change. It is used to create natural fuel and renewable plastics. It helps improve oceanic ecosystems.
People think of forests as the best defense(防护)against climate change. But some researchers say seaweed is a better settlement. Unlike trees, seaweed doesn't need fertilizers or fresh water. It grows faster than trees do. And it doesn't require any land. Most importantly, it absorbs carbon from the environment.
Seaweed could also become a key global food source. Many worry about the environmental influence of eating meat. Could seaweed farms provide enough protein for the world Carlos Duarte, a professor of oceanic ecology thinks so. When you look at how we are going to feed the world population by 2050, in a way that doesn't harm the environment, there is only one pathway," he says. "Seaweed fanning."
In the past decade or so, global seaweed production has doubled. In British Columbia, seaweed farming becoming popular. For thousands of years, First Nations people, the native people of Canada, have farmed on land and in the ocean. Seaweed farming helps them create economies of their own that agree with their traditions. Their role has always been to connect with the land and repair it.
Seaweed might fight climate change but it isn't without risks. If it isn't harvested, it can go bad and give off carbon back into the air or water. Growing too much of it could also affect the amount of light that reaches species living deeper in the water. That would be dangerous for underwater ecosystems. So some scientists think seaweed can be a part of the settlement to climate change, but it's not a perfect one on its own.

Sigrid finished milking the cow and stepped out of the barn into the cold air. It was almost summer, but icebergs still filled the narrow sea. She set the bucket down, only to find that the milk reached merely halfway to the top. If we don't get more food soon, she thought anxiously, we will have to eat the cow. And then what will we do
Grandfather used to tell her that when their Norse ancestors first came to Greenland, the fields were rich with grass. But in recent years, the climate has been getting colder and the summers shorter. When her grandfather was a little boy, there were as many as fifteen cows in the family's barn. Now there is just one. And the family has barely enough hay to feed it.
A gust of wind sending a chill down her spine, Sigrid stuffed her hands into the pockets to warm them. Her fingers felt her most prized possession, a piece of red cloth she'd had since she was a small girl. She took the cloth out of her pocket and let it unfold. It was barely longer than her arm. But its brilliant colour was bright against the stark(荒凉的) landscape. The cloth had once been part of a dress—in happier, more prosperous times. Nobody dresses like that anymore.
With ice-filled seas, ships no longer arrive with foods and goods to trade. All of a sudden, movement on the water caught Sigrid's eye. A light boat moved silently between the icebergs. An Inuk boy, about Sigrid's age, was looking her way, staring at the red cloth fluttering(飘动) in the breeze. A hunting weapon was tied to the front of his boat. And dragging behind it was a large fish. Sigrid knew there had been fights between the Inuit and the Norse. But the boy had a kind face and did not reach for his weapon.

【原文】M: Hospitals have not always been clean, quiet places. Long ago they were dirty and crowded. Nurses were never taught how to look after their patients and many people died. This is the story of Florence Nightingale, who changed all this.
Florence was born in 1820 and died in 1910. Growing up, she was a quiet and serious young girl. She spent a lot of time playing with her dolls. She would pretend that the dolls were sick and she was their nurse. People would bring sick or injured animals for her to look after. She even mended a dog's broken leg when she was a young girl.
She often went with her mother to visit the poor people. They took food and medicine to the sick. It was these visits that first gave her the idea of becoming a nurse.
Her chance came in 1854 when Britain went to war against Russia in a place called the Crimea. Florence was asked to take a group of nurses to look after the sick and wounded soldiers. The hospitals were dirty. Florence and her team cleaned the hospital rooms and beds. Florence worked so hard that she became ill.
After the war, Florence returned to London as a national hero. She started a school to teach nurses how to look after their patients. She never really got better from the illness that she had in the Crimea and she died later.

33.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Could seaweed farms provide enough protein for the world Carlos Duarte, a professor of oceanic ecology thinks so.(海草养殖场能为全世界提供足够的蛋白质吗 海洋生态学教授Carlos Duarte特认为可以。)”和“When you look at how we are going to feed the world population by 2050, in a way that doesn't harm the environment, there is only one pathway--- Seaweed fanning.(到2050年,我们将如何在不损害环境的前提下养活世界人口,当你想到这一点时,只有一条路——海藻)”可知,Carlos Duarte对通过种植海草来供给全世界的食物这项计划是非常支持的。故选D项。

66.Dear Ryan,
I’m Li Hua from Class 7. I’m writing to share my opinion on the current assessment method, which only takes into account the final exam score.
This approach may not fully assess a student’s overall understanding and progress in the subject. It could be beneficial to include other components such as quizzes, presentations and class participation to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of a student’s performance, which would offer a better reflection of each student’s capabilities. I believe a diversified approach would contribute to a more effective learning environment.
I appreciate your consideration and look forward to your improving the assessment strategy.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
