Some years ago, I had a friend who got into trouble on the internet. He was writing a book that showed a strong opinion on a controversial topic and had been talking about it on social media. He didn’t have a large following, but activists who opposed his view of the issue began to notice and decided that he needed punishing for wrongthink.
Their anger about his work spread the conversation to people who anonymously (匿名地) and deliberately seek to upset others and start fights online — and one thing led to another, some of them began to abuse my friend harshly. “People are telling me to kill myself!” he told me, with desperation in his voice. He started worrying about being doxed. “Do I need private security Maybe I should move.”
Out of curiosity, I asked my friend how much time he was then spending on social media, monitoring all the abuse. “Pretty much all day,” he said. This made sense to him because he felt the severity of the situation demanded his full attention: A threat’s a threat, right I made one simple suggestion: Delete the apps and stop interacting with social media for a week. He took my advice reluctantly, but over the next few days, he stopped thinking about the trouble so much. By the time he reopened the apps, he found those mean guys had largely moved on to new victims and targets.
What my friend learned was that this annoyance, which had seemed very real to him, could be erased almost completely by using two powerful weapons: ______. What works in our internet-based culture can apply equally well to other areas of modern life. Take again this friend of mine for example. After that incident, he started thinking: Were there other areas of his life where the two weapons could work. After getting informed about alcohol use, he changed his perception of drinking and avoided engaging with the substance. He also decided to reevaluate what had been his favorite news organization; he then saw it in a much more questioning light, so he withdrew his attention by unsubscribing.
4. What did those opponents of the author’s friend do
A. They showed a strong opposition against the controversial topic.
B. They angrily and publicly opposed that friend’s argument.
C. They deliberately and secretly triggered online fights.
D. They resorted to merciless bullying of that friend.
5 Which of the following may be an act of “doxing” (Paragraph 2)
A. calling someone names B. revealing one’s phone number
C. visiting someone personally D. making up some stories
6. What did that targeted man do to survive the attacks
A. He talked with his friends. B. He moved house immediately.
C. He ignored the abuse temporarily. D. He opened the app once every week.
7. What might be the weapons mentioned in the last paragraph
A. perception and attention B. friendship and ignorance
C. refusal and departure D. disengagement and evaluation

Hanai, the Hawaiian word for adoption, is also the name of a coffee shop in Phoenix, Arizona, US. It offers valuable hands-on job experience for youth aging out of the foster care system, who lack a permanent family for continued support. 18-year-old Trinity is one such youth. She once felt unsure about her future. “We get a lot of pity, but it doesn’t really help us out. It just makes it worse,” she told CBS News.
According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which offers support to American families in need, foster care is a temporary living arrangement for children whose parents are unable to care for them and whose situation has come to the attention of child welfare agencies. While in foster care, children may live with relatives or foster families.
A key goal of foster care is to make sure that kids are living in stable families. However, around 20,000 young people age out of foster care each year when they turn 18 or 21, depending on the state they are in. These youth are more prone to homelessness, unemployment, crime and early parenthood compared to those who have a permanent home to go to. “It is vital for states and communities to have programmes like this for foster kids because these kids don’t have a support system. They don’t have a safety net,” Ryan Senters, the founder of Hanai, told CBS News.
A 4-week programme was held recently at Hanai to introduce kids aged 15 and older to workplace skills. They work part-time at the cafe, learning everything from what to wear to how to deal with difficult customers. “I learned how to do interviews, time management for people, taking orders... communication, customer service... and I feel like that’s really helping,” Trinity told CBS News. Now she can comfortably take orders from customers, make coffee and serve food. She loves her job and hopes to work full-time after graduation.
“People think we’re helping them, but honestly, no, they’re helping us,” Senters told CBS News.
8. Why does the author mention Trinity in Paragraph 1
A. To draw attention to the issue.
B. To express sympathy for the girl.
C. To make a remarkable contrast.
D. To prove the popularity of Hanai.
9. What do we know about those in foster care
A. Their families are trying to offer lasting care and help.
B. They have no option but to live with foster families.
C. They are likely to be trapped in difficult situations.
D. The foster care system has done enough to finance them.
10. How does the programme affect Trinity
A. She feels a sense of responsibility. B. She becomes talkative.
C. She achieved academic success. D. She gains life skills.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Ryan Senters: a Caring Person
B. Hanai: Offering Valuable Help
C. Trinity: a Really Lucky Girl
D. Foster Care: Lending a Hand
D
While the idea of living on the moon was once a thing of science fiction, several space agencies including NASA and Roscosmos are racing to make it a reality. Now, one scientist has revealed what he thinks the lunar cities could look like in the next 150 years, in a project named “Moontopia”.
Professor Lewis Dartnell, a science communication expert at the University of Westminster, has teamed up with Hillarys to bring his vision to light. He said: “As our understanding of space advances, the opportunity to start a new world becomes ever more possible. Moving home or to another country is already incredibly exciting, imagine what it would be like to move to an entirely different environment. The challenges and problems would be new and hard but the mind boggles at what the human race could achieve if we take this next step.”
Professor Dartnell predicts that homes in Moontopia will be built in lava tubes, and that settlers will travel around using bikes or on foot. Moontopia would also include an airlock that would keep the city pressurized, meaning people could walk around freely without spacesuits. The lunar city could have lakes, parks and basketball courts.
While this sounds pretty great so far, if you’re used to eating what you want, when you want it, living in Moontopia could be a struggle. Other key challenges would include adapting to the temperatures on the Moon. In direct sunlight, the temperatures can reach up to 100℃, while at night, they can drop to -170℃! Thankfully, the temperature inside lava tubes would be easily controlled.
While Professor Dartnell’s vision is merely based on predictions, lunar cities could become a reality in the not-so-distant future. In 2016, Russia announced plans to build a human settlement on the Moon by 2030, while NASA plans to establish a lunar outpost in 2028.
12. What do we know about Moontopia from the text
A. Moontopia will be highly liveable.
B. People can travel freely in Moontopia.
C. People can choose whatever to cat in Moontopia.
D. Moontopia is a project about doing research on the moon.
13. What do the underlined words “the mind boggles at” probably mean
A. We may be worried about.
B We may be puzzled at.
C. We may hesitate about.
D. We may be amazed at.
14. What conclusion can we draw from the text
A. It is extremely cold in Moontopia.
B. Living on the moon is on its way.
C. Professor Dartnell carried out the research alone.
D. NASA has built a lunar settlement earlier than Russia.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Finding out whether lunar cities can exist.
B. Exploring the weather condition on the moon.
C. Predicting what lunar cities will be like.
D. Offering the opportunity to move to the moon.

How to Avoid Meaningless Social Interactions
In today’s world, we often find ourselves trapped in tiring social circles that are using up our energy. Learning to identify and avoid meaningless interactions is crucial for mental well-being. Here are some practical strategies.
____16____ Before attending any social event, ask yourself: “Does this agree with my values ” or “Will this help me grow ” If you’re attending just out of obligation (义务), it’s likely an unworthy commitment. Psychologists suggest that 70% of social tiredness comes from activities we didn’t genuinely want to join.
Quality Over Quantity. Having hundreds of so-called friends doesn’t equal true connection. ____17____ A Cambridge University study shows that people with 3-5 deep friendships report higher life satisfaction than those with dozens of so- called ones. Invest time in relationships that inspire growth each other.
Master the Art of saying No. The fear of missing out often pushes us into unwanted gatherings. ____18____ Politely declining invitations with simple statements like “I have other priorities” is perfectly acceptable. Remember, every “yes” to others is a “no” to yourself.
Digital Detoxification (数字排毒). Social media creates fantasy of obligation. ____19____ Schedule specific time to check messages instead of responding immediately. Research indicates that limiting social media use to 30 minutes daily significantly reduces anxiety.
Embrace Staying alone. ____20____ Regular staying alone allows for self-reflection and recharging. Historical figures like Newton and Kefka produced their best work during periods of being alone. Start with short walks or coffee breaks alone to rediscover the joy of your own company.
A. Being alone doesn’t mean being lonely.
B. Practice setting boundaries without guilt.
C. Prioritize activities that bring personal fulfillment.
D. Evaluate the purpose of social engagement s beforehand.
E Stop following accounts that cause negative comparisons.
F. Instead, focus on developing a few meaningful relationships.
G. Many online interactions are performative rather than genuine.

Could you eat your pet Guinea pig In recent years, that question has become a classic example in cultural anthropology (人类学) classes that relate to the ____21____ nature of our attitudes towards food.
Think about it. On one side of the great Guinea Pig Divide stand Andean cultures, who have long treated the furry creature as a nutritious source of food. On the other side are European and US cultures, where the animal is ____22____ considered a beloved pet.
While western children would doubtlessly react with ____23____ to the idea of eating these little creatures, to some cultures in Ecuador and Peru it seems equally strange to cherish them as pets. ____24____, how we treat guinea pigs is one of the many small ways in which we define our sense of what exactly is considered “exotic”.
As any anthropology class will also teach you, ____25____ others as “exotic” or “weird”, because of food or anything else, also makes it easier to demonise (妖魔化) them. However, there is another side to this. Culture can often be more ____26____ than we realise, particularly in a globalised age. Gideon Lasco, an anthropologist from the Philippines, has been studying the issue of how and why Andean cultures cat guinea pigs. His research starts by ___27___ that this food is a social divider not just between Andean cultures and the West, but also inside of countries such as Peru.
Some Andean cultures have eaten guinea pigs, known as cuy, for centuries. But in recent decades, urban Peruvians have ____28____, knowing that westerners view the practice in a negative light.
More recently, however, notes Lasco, two striking ____29____ have emerged. First, some western tourists have started to view eating guinea-pig dishes as ____30____. While globalisation has already brought dishes from around the world into western supermarkets, chopped guinea pig is not yet ____31____ in Walmart, hence its value as an “experience”. Second, some educated Peruvian have also become more interested in defining and championing what makes them ____32____ in a globalized world by creating a new form of cuy cuisine in Lima. “As eating’ local’ becomes more fashionable around the world, wealthier people have been ____33____ time-honored foods,” Lasco writes.
Those furry creatures are no longer just a sign of global ____34____ but of cultural flexibility. This may not, however, make western kids feel any better about the idea of their pets being cooked. But the issue should help them (and adults) to ____35____ that our assumptions need not be set in stone, or cages.

The whole field burst into thunderous cheers. In the end, Katia Smith from Hillside Middle School takes first place in the girls’ 400-meter race! The crowd in the track went wild and Katia’s teammates shouted, “Let’s go celebrate, Katia!”
Before going for the celebration, she took off her worn blue track spikes (钉鞋), carefully wiping the dust off the spikes and putting them in a shoe organizer (收纳袋). This was a pair of old spikes and they were bursting at the seams (接缝), but she didn’t care, because they were her lucky shoes and she firmly believed it was the shoes that helped her win the previous races. “Next Saturday, let’s bring home the gold together,” Katia whispered to her spikes, excitedly going celebration with her teammates.
Katia and her teammates went to the Perse — the most famous local restaurant. After enjoying the cuisines in the restaurant, they moved on to an amusement park. The party was quickly in full swing, with music and the smell of grilled food filling the air. “Sweet Katia!” One of Katia’s teammates, Gracia, rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” she shouted. “You have to try the slide. Katia’s eyes darted toward the party area.” “Slide What slide ” Suddenly, she saw it. The BIGGEST inflatable (充气的) slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Without thinking twice, Katia put her shoe organizer on a bench, took off her shoes and ran toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time. She plopped down, hurried to the edge, and closed her eyes as she let go. “Woo-hoo!” Katia couldn’t get enough. She conquered the slide again and again.

As she set her eyes on the bench from a distance, panic set in. The lucky spikes were not there! Katia picked up the pace, her heart pounding louder the closer she got. When she reached the bench she’d left them, her heart stopped. “My lucky spikes are gone. ” she screeched. Katia’s teammates helped her search every corner of the park. “No lucky spikes. I won’t win the gold.”Katia groaned. Katia had no choice but to get a new pair of spikes for the coming event. The next day, the best track teams in the county gathered at the track for the track-and-field championships. “Next up is the girls’ 400 meters race,” said the announcer.
Katia nervously approached the starting line wearing her brand-new spikes. Though anxious about her lost lucky spikes, Katia decided to run with all her forces. Runners were ready now. Hearing the starting buzzers, Katia was off in a flash. She attentively ran just as she usually trained. Closer and closer she got. She was nearly there. Just the last 30 meters and - “Number 5, Katia Smith, takes the gold for Hillside Middle School.” bellowed the announcer. Surprised, Katia rushed over to her roaring teammates. As Katia squatted to unties her shoes, Gracia cried out, Katia, you broke a record for the 400 meters race! Then she added, Lucky you.” Lucky me " Katia froze at first and then she realized that there were no lucky spikes but her efforts brought true luck.
