Cathy Brennan calmly paddled her bright yellow kayak(皮艇)down the Potomac River, continuing her voyage, the latest of her solo trips on major waterways. It was tough, but it allowed Brennan to let go of everything else, empty her brain of the everyday chores and focus on the present. “I’m in the moment, looking at the waves, ” said Brennan. The journey is a minimalist style: a sleeping bag, a small tent, a rain jacket, a change of clothes, a first aid hit, apples and cheese sticks. “I always drink the river,” she says. Brennan loves being on the rivers, seeing the eagles above, deer on the banks and a fascinating bunch of bugs and insects that never find their way into homes.
However, every few days Brennan will find a hotel for the night where she can get a shower and at a chceseburger. She’ll also check in with her husband John, who has helped her select the river and research the trips at their home. “He’s my virtual Sherpa with benefits, ” Brennan says, laughing. She has a phone with her but seldom calls or texts anyone. Her children usually keep track of her via the transponder(应答器)that sends them her location every 10 minutes or so.
Brennan knows that solo kayaking is not for everyone and she’s not reckless. When going through rapids(急流), she watches the weather in advance. She is careful about where she camps and who is around her. She has packed up her equipment and headed back out on the river when she has felt unsafe.
She is alone on these journeys but she isn’t lonely. She suggested that we all need some disconnection from the wired world to find the wider world around us.

A voice reaches us from silence: “I am alive, I can think, and no one has the right to deny me these two realities. ”
The words were conveyed by a flicker(跳动)of the left eyelid. It came from a book, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, by a former journalist. Jean Dominique Bauby. He worked for journals like the Quotidien de Paris and Paris Match. For four years until December 1995, he was the very successful chief editor of Elle.
Then the unthinkable happened. A cardiovascular(心血管的)accident sent him into a deep coma(昏迷). His brain remained undamaged, but its connection to his body left him with only the ability to blink(眨眼)his left eyelid. The poor man was found to be suffering from the rare disease “Locked-in Syndrome”, unable to breathe or eat without assistance.
In this body, however, his brain was working wildly, trying to make people understand what he was thinking. Assisted by nurse Claude Mendibil, he was able to write his book, using only his ability to blink at the most frequently used letters. Blink. Pause. Blink again. 200, 000 tines, he spelled out his book—100 pages born from the silence of his body. In it, Bauby describes his paralyzed(瘫痪的)existence as being trapped in an old-fashioned deep-sea diving bell while the “butterflies” of his mind fly freely.
One would expect from this process formal factual report, but that is not the case. The book reads in flowing images that light up his dilemma. The style is clear and fresh, and not without elegance, imagination and humor. He is also in search of past time, of memory itself, of the books he had read, the poems he had learnt by heart. Even sadder, he thinks of all the books he wanted to read and hadn’t gotten to. He has to listen to someone else reading them to him. He recalls meals, a horse race, his life and work as an editor, and his struggle in his hospital bed to twitch(抽动)his nose when a fly lands on it.
“From this hell comes a great message of life and hope, ” said Antoine Audouard, a friend of Bauby’s and the book’s publisher.

People have different ways of dealing with a common cold. Some take over the counter medicines such as aspirin while others try popular home remedies(治疗)like herbal tea or chicken soup. Yet here is the tough truth about the common cold: nothing really cures it
So why do people sometimes believe that their remedies work According to James Taylor, professor at the University of Washington, colds usually go away on their own in about a week, improving a little each day after symptoms peak, so it’s easy to believe it’s medicine rather than time that deserves the credit, USA Today reported.
It still seems hard to believe that we can deal with more serious diseases yet are powerless against something so common as a cold. Recently, scientists came closer to figure out why. To understand it, you first need to know how antiviral(抗病毒的)drugs work. They attack the virus by attaching to and changing the surface structures of the virus. To do that, the drug must fit and lock into the virus like the right piece of a jigsaw, which means scientists have to identify the virus and build a 3D model to study its surface before they can design an antiviral drug that is effective enough.
The two cold viruses that scientists had long known about were rhino-virus(鼻病毒)A and B. But they didn’t find out about the existence of a third virus, rhino-virus C, until 2006. All three of them contribute to the common cold, but drugs that work well against rhino-virus A and B have little effect when used against rhino-virus C.
“This explains most of the previous failures of drug tests against rhino-viruses, ” study leader Professor Ann C. Palmenberg at the University of Wis-cons in Madison, US, told Science Daily. Now, more than 10 years after the discovery of rhino virus C, scientists have finally built a highly detailed 3D model of the virus, showing that the surface of the virus is, as expected, different from that of other cold viruses.
With the model in hand, hopefully a real cure for a common cold is on its way. Soon, we may no longer have to waste our money on medicines that don’t really work.
32.What does the author think of popular remedies for a common cold
A.They are quite effective. B.They actually have no effect.
C.They are slightly helpful. D.They still need to be improved.
33.How do antiviral drugs work
A.By breaking up cold viruses directly.
B.By preventing colds from developing into serious diseases.
C.By changing the surface structures of the cold viruses.
D.By absorbing different kinds of cold viruses at the same time.
34.What can we infer from the passage
A.The surface of cold viruses looks quite similar.
B.Scientists have already found a cure for the common cold.
C.Knowing the structure of cold viruses is the key to developing an effective cure.
D.Scientists were not aware of the existence of rhino-virus C until recently
35.What is the best title for this passage
A.Drugs against cold viruses B.Helpful home remedies
C.Research on cold viruses D.No current cure for common cold

Most students, regardless of age or background, truly enjoy participating in art. The appealing aspects of art are what draw our attention and keep us intently focused. Integrating art into the classroom is no different.
Students who participate in art strengthen their focus skills. 36 For visual art, that problem may be determining which art tools or materials will effectively create the picture that they have in their minds. For performance art, students may need accurate timing to come in on cue. Regardless of the art medium, students must stay in tune with what is happening in order to successfully complete their work.
In continuing with student enjoyment of art, students find art as an outlet for self-expression and creativity. 37 Students can create whatever they desire within the areas of their imagination. If they can see it, they can create it. Even the most timid of students can express themselves through art.
Increased engagement and motivation equals increased determination and perseverance. When students start an art project, they are typically more determined to see it completed. Most elementary teachers can prove the fact that many students are not happy when their work of art is interrupted before it has been completed. 38
From the development of self-expression and creativity comes increased student confidence! 39 Students develop a greater sense of self by expressing themselves openly and in their own way. It is also quite rewarding for students to share their art with others, thereby developing their interpersonal skills.
40 Participation in art is highly beneficial to student performance in the classroom. Art requires use of multiple parts of the brain, thus, providing better overall brain usage in students.
A.There are no limits with art.
B.Art can surely make students smarter.
C.Students colorfully write out the word.

In high school, many students may encounter difficulties in their studies, and so did I. Sometimes, I would become very confused. Math problems that seemed to be impossible to solve, puzzling grammar in English, and difficult historical events all made me feel at a loss. I didn’t know where to start or how to improve.
Moreover, the fierce competition among classmates also added to my anxiety. Seeing others doing well, I couldn’t help but question myself, wondering if I was working hard enough. This sense of uncertainty made me doubt my abilities and future. I was losing patience and drive.
One sunny day, as I was sitting in the classroom feeling a bit bored, my teacher came in and announced that we would have a special project—to plant a tree in the schoolyard. I was excited at the thought of getting outside and doing something different.
I went outside and started digging the hole for the tree. I worked hard, feeling the dirt on my hands and the sweat on my forehead. As I was working, a classmate, Mary, came over and said, “Hey, you’re really putting a lot of effort into this! ” I smiled and replied, “Yeah, I want this tree to grow strong. It feels like we’re doing something meaningful. ” Mary nodded in agreement. “Definitely. And it’s amazing to think about how we’re all part of this process of growth. ”
As the weeks passed, I would visit the tree often, observing the little tree as it faced many challenges, including harsh weather and strong winds. But each time, it overcame them and continued to grow taller and stronger, providing shade and shelter for us. Its journey in the wind and rain was a test of its perseverance(坚持)and growth. It made me wonder whether I could be like the tree, growing and changing.
