Pig weighing tradition
How many ways can you think of for weighing a pig
想称一头猪的重量,你能想出几种方法?
At Hangzhou Dinglan Experimental Middle School in Zhejiang, an exciting event took place on Jan 30. The students weighed (称重) a pig!
The yearly event has started since 2017. Teachers and students work together to use science to weigh pigs. In the past, they used methods like levers (杠杆法) and Archimedes’ principle (阿基米德定律). This time, students used Magdeburg hemispheres (马德堡半球) to do it.
The students used two hemispheres and connected (连接) one to a cage with a pig inside. By using a formula (公式), they used the air pressure (气压) to find out the pig’s weight.
However, the pig was much bigger than it was last year, so it was much harder for students to get it to the test area.
“As the pig was about to go into the cage, it suddenly lay down and didn’t move at all,” Liu Nian, 13, told Teens. Finally, they pushed (推) it into the cage.
After trying a few times and finding the average (平均数), the students found that the black pig weighed 165.3 kilograms. This was very close to the pig’s known weight of 154.5 kg.
“We use what we learn in textbooks to work out real problems. This makes science even more exciting,” Hu Yulin, 14, told Teens.
By Xiong Jian, 21st Century TeensMAGDEBURG HEMISPHERES
In 1654, a scientist in Magdeburg, Germany, did an experiment with two big hemispheres. When he took the air out from inside, the two halves stuck together and were really hard to pull apart. This showed that air pressure is real and very powerful (强大的) .

Starting this autumn semester, students at primary and middle schools in Beijing have longer breaks between classes. It has been changed from 10 minutes to 15 minutes so that students can spend more time outdoors for their physical and mental (心理的) well-being.
During the break time between classes, Xiao Jingsheng from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School often rushed to the toilet then back to class with no time for anything else. But now that changes. “I can have more time to rest and share many things with my classmates,” says the 14-year-old boy.
To help children better enjoy break-time activities, some schools mixes break time with labor education (劳动教育) by opening planting areas and animal breeding zones (饲养区).
“We welcome new friends to our school—some ducks and rabbits!” says Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old student from Beijing 101 Middle School Kuangda Campus. “During the breaks, some play with these cute animals, while others exercise on the playground. We get closer to nature, which is refreshing and relaxing.”
As the break time is longer, making sure everyone is safe is also important. Physical education (PE) teachers from the School Affiliated to Chaoyang Education Research Center keep an eye on students playing on the ground. “Sometimes the ground can be wet in the morning, so we tell the students to do more upper body exercises to avoid (避免) running and slipping,” says one PE teacher.

At the grain base (粮食基地), teachers talked about grains with students and answered their questions. The students saw millet and soybeans (小米和大豆). They touched the wheat (小麦) and learned that people usually harvest the wheat at the end of September.
“I wrote down all the nutrients such as proteins (蛋白质) in millet in my notebook,” said Dong Guangye. He learned that eating millet can be good for people’s health.
Other students also learned something new. “I knew about soybeans only from textbooks. This time, I saw real ones and learned how they grow,” said Fang Weiqian.

“We had very short break (课间休息) today!” Beatrice Dathan told her mother after coming home from school one day. Beatrice’s family moved from California to Connecticut. In California, Beatrice had 50 minutes of break time every day. In Connecticut, she had only 20 minutes.
Lucy Dathan is Beatrice’s mom. She wishes Beatrice had more breaktime, and she isn’t the only person having this idea. A number of people in the country try to give kids more break time. In 2017, a report came out: Playtime makes students healthy and helps students make more friends.
The head teacher of Stanfield Elementary School in Arizona sees the benefits (好处) of break. In 2018, the state started to help students ask for longer break.
Today, no less than six states have laws (法律) asking schools to give students longer break. Other states are thinking about it. Children can also help change (改变) laws.
Izzy Kopsky, 8, is one of those children. What’s his favorite part of the break Playing with his friends. But Izzy felt he didn’t have enough time to do that. So, he told the law makers that more break time was good for his study.

Skateboarding class has found its way into schools! For sixth grader Carlos Cervantes, learning to skateboard takes a lot of work, but it pays off. “On the first day of class, I thought skateboarding would be scary. But I tried it,” said the 12-year-old boy. “After two days’ practice, I felt more comfortable.”
Carlos is learning to skateboard in an after-school program at West Middle School in Colorado. PE teachers start their skateboarding classes by teaching students how to put on their safety gear (装备). Students then learn how to fall without getting hurt. And they start practicing. Sometimes they fall, but when they succeed, they smile heartily.
Skateboarding keeps kids engaged (参与) in physical movement. It is good for their health and gives them new skills and interests. It also teaches kids the life lesson that if they keep trying something, they will finally succeed. Students who are learning to skateboard often spend hours practicing a new trick before they get it right. “A baby will try to walk 600 to 900 times before he or she is successful,” the PE teacher Eric Klassen at West Middle School says. “We tell students that they shouldn’t say ‘I can’t do it’ unless they’ve tried 600 to 900 times.” And his students do take his advice to heart and keep practicing until they finally succeed.
PE teachers in many schools have started teaching classes such as skateboarding, yoga, and even rock climbing. These sports are called “the new PE”. They are often individual (个人的) sports. Schools teach “the new PE” to help fight childhood obesity (肥胖) and develop lifelong fitness habits. Students get a chance to exercise, whether they make it onto a school team or not.
46.What did Carlos Cervantes think of skateboarding on the first day of class
47.How do PE teachers start their skateboarding classes at West Middle School
48.Why do schools teach “the new PE”

It’s 8:45 a.m. and the bell is ringing. Yu Xiaoming just finishes an English class and needs to run to the science building for the next class. To get there on time, he spends all his 10-minute break time and even doesn’t have time to go to the toilet (卫生间).
There is something wrong with these short 10-minute breaks between classes. Now, it’s time to make a change. Many schools in Beijing work hard on this problem.
To give students a real rest, schools in Beijing start to have 15-minute breaks on 1st September. And each school has a 30-minute big break in the morning and another in the afternoon, so students will have more time to have a rest and play outside.
To help students use their break time better, many schools in Beijing think up some ideas. For example, Dianchanglu Primary School builds a climbing wall for its students. Qianjiadian Central Primary School builds a “Happy Farm” for students to do some farm work. What do you think of these activities Do you have more great ideas for break time

A new school year is coming! But surprisingly (诧异地), many students in the US now only need to go to school four days a week. And more and more schools are following the trend.
The practice is different between states. Some schools take Mondays off, while others take Fridays off.
Although only four days are left, the students spend more time learning each day. This is because every state has a standard (标准) for learning time—it’s usually about 30 hours a week.
The change is partly because there are not enough teachers in the US. The US National Education Association made a research (调查) in 2022. It showed that many teachers left their jobs because of burnout (过度劳累) and low pay.
Then for students, how do they spend the extra day Most students would like to spend the day at home. They do homework or help their parents do housework.
Although the four-day schedule sounds great, there can be some problems for both students and parents.
● Longer school days can be difficult for younger students. They may be more tired during school days.
● Parents may not have time to look after their children. On the fifth day, children may be left alone at home.
● Family meals will cost more. On the fifth day, students have to eat at home. Their food costs may be higher.
Fewer School Days in the US
It is 54 that more and more American schools are following a new trend to change their students’ learning time at school.
Introduction Different states have different four-day schedules. Although there are only four school days in a week, students will have 55 learning time every day because every state has a standard for learning time.
Reason Schools in the US don’t have enough teachers. Many teachers left their jobs because of 56 and low pay.
Problems Longer school days are hard and 57 for younger students. Parents may not have time to take care of their children. Parents may 58 more money on students’ food.
