During the summer, Hu Miaokun, a 19-year-old with congenital (先天的) deafness, received offers from seven universities, after years of efforts.
Born in 2005 in a village in Hubei Province, Hu lost his father at five and later lived with his grandparents after his mother remarried. Supported by his family, he was admitted to a school for children with hearing disability. “Adapting to life in a group was tough,” Hu sighed. “When I first started school, everything felt scary. I couldn’t hear anything, completely lost. I had to get used to the new environment, follow new rules, and learn how to interact with others. But over time, these challenges became easier to manage.”
Hu recalls how his teachers used tailored techniques and tools to aid learning. After middle school, Hu attended a specialized high school. For students with hearing and speech impairments (损伤), learning English proved particularly difficult. While many of his schoolmates had some basic knowledge of the language and were exposed to English through songs, movies, and everyday conversations, Hu had no previous exposure, making the task even more challenging.
“My key is reading, writing, and translation,” Hu said. He created a detailed study plan and excelled. Hu Miaokun took the national college en trance examination. His hard work paid off. Since August, Hu Miaokun has received offers from all seven universities to which he applied. Ultimately, Hu Miaokun decided to pursue product design at his dream school, Tianjin University of Technology.
With ambitions of becoming a 3D designer specializing in product modeling, he is now focusing on mastering various modeling software. “I’m deeply thankful to my aunt and everyone who has supported me,” Hu Miaokun signed. “I will continue to work hard in my studies and, in the future, use my skills to inspire and assist others.”

According to a landmark study published today in the journal Science, butterfly numbers across the US have dropped by 22% between 2000 and 2020. Researchers analyzed data from 35 monitoring programs tracking 554 species at nearly 2,500 locations. “This is startling. People should be seeing this number and being very, very concerned, not just about butterflies, but about the state of insects in general,” says Eliza Grames, a conservation biologist at Binghamton University in New York and co-author of the study.
The findings show over 100 species lost half their population, including 22 that decreased by 90% or more. Even common butterflies like the West Virginia white were struggling. Decreases were strongest in the Southwest, while the Pacific Northwest showed smaller losses. However, the study might not show the full picture. Scientists only had enough data to study half of US butterfly species.Grames explained that unstudied species might be in worse condition since they are harder to observe.
“This isn’t just about butterflies — it’s a warning sign for the overall biodiversity crisis,” says Grames. Insect populations worldwide are decreasing 1-2% yearly due to similar threats (威胁). Birds and other animals relying on insects for food face growing risks.
Many factors lead to butterfly losses including habitat loss, climate change and pesticide (杀虫剂) use. While solving these problems requires big society efforts, each of us can help. Grames says, “Because insects can have one to three generations per year, even small changes to the environment — such as planting native flowers or creating habitats — can ensure a pretty immediate increase in population.”
Of course, participating in butterfly monitoring programs in community is another way to make a difference. “I think butterflies do have the ability to recover fast, if we put the effort into conservation actions,” says Grames.
8. What does the underlined word “startling” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Awesome. B. Interesting. C. Strange. D. Alarming.
9. What can we infer about unstudied butterfly species
A. They are less influenced by pesticides.
B. Their situations might be more serious.
C. Current monitoring programs are ineffective.
D. Butterflies are harder to track than other insects.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Pesticides are the primary threat.
B. Habitat loss drives butterfly decrease.
C. Global solutions outweigh individual actions.
D. Ordinary people can improve butterfly populations.
11. Which is necessary for butterflies’ rapid recovery in Grames’ view
A. The reproductive ability of butterflies themselves.
B. The improvement in natural ecological environment.
C. Positive conservation of butterflies by the community.
D. Research into the other half of US butterfly species.

NASA’s Lunar Third Generation Partnership (3GPP) is researching how to bring wireless technologies to the Moon, but significant challenges remain. Extreme temperatures and radiation can damage commercial - grade electronics, and adapting complex 4G and 5G system’ for the lunar surface is a major challenge. “We still have much to learn about the lunar surface radio frequency transmission environment,” says Raymond Wagner, principal investigator of the Lunar 3GPP project. Once operational, these systems will allow astronauts to communicate reliably with rovers (探月车), instruments, and crew members, while efficiently transmitting (传输) data back to Earth through a single link.
To address these challenges, NASA is developing relay (转播) satellites as part of its Lunar Communications Relay and Navigation Systems project. The European Space Agency (ESA), a key Artemis mission partner, is also contributing through its Moonlight programme.ESA plans to create a network of three or four communications and data-relay satellites, similar to Earth’s GPS. The first step is the Lunar Pathfinder mission in 2025, which will test the necessary technology. ESA’s navigation payload (导航有效载荷) will be onboard, and NASA will share instruments and access lunar relay services. By combining these efforts with radio ranging, the project will gather location data to explore how a Moonlight-like navigation system could be carried out, laying the groundwork for a future lunar project.
Wagner highlights the rapid advancements in mobile communications on Earth over the past two decades and expresses his idea about bringing similar technologies to the Moon. “If we reliably use those same conveniences to the Moon, we’ll be in great shape,” he says. “These efforts aim to create a strong communication network to support safer and more efficient lunar missions, paving the way for future exploration and potential settlements.”
In summary, NASA and ESA are developing relay satellites and testing new technologies to overcome lunar communication challenges. Projects like Lunar Pathfinder and Moonlight aim to establish a reliable network for astronauts and equipment, enabling efficient data transmission and navigation. As Wagner notes, advancements in Earth’s mobile communications serve as a model for lunar systems, bringing us closer to safer, more efficient, and better-connected lunar missions.
12. What was NASA’s core purpose for researching lunar wireless technologies
A. To reduce the size of equipment for lunar missions.
B. To replace existing communication systems on the Moon.
C. To enable astronauts to survive extreme lunar temperatures.
D. To establish reliable communication and data transmission on the Moon.
13 What can we know from the second paragraph
A. NASA will fund the Lunar Pathfinder mission in 2025 alone.
B. ESA plans to launch more satellites than NASA for the lunar network.
C. The joint project aims to test technology for a future lunar navigation system.
D. ESA’s navigation payload will operate independently of NASA’s instruments.
14. What is Wagner’s attitude towards lunar communication systems
A. Negative. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Optimistic.
15. Which is a suitable title for the text
A. Establishing Communication Networks on the Moon
B. Putting Communicative Technology to Test
C. Building and Launching Relay Satellites
D. Setting about Lunar Exploration

When I learned that I couldn’t get salary again, my heart sank. How would I manage the increasing bills, the groceries and my kids’ needs The future seemed helpless. With a heavy heart, I hurried to pick up my two kids. My mind raced wildly.
Just at that moment, I spotted a wallet lying on the sidewalk. It was as though fate (命运) had thrown a lifeline to me. Hope came to me as I got close to it. The wallet was large, and the moment I opened it, my eyes widened in disbelief at the sight of such a large amount of cash inside it. I hesitated for a minute, torn between the instant relief that this money promised and the morality of keeping it for myself.
I searched through the wallet out of curiosity. Inside it were a photo and a couple of business cards. However much I wanted to take the things inside, my moral principles and inner voice told me never to do that. The decision became clear: I couldn’t keep this money for myself. It didn’t rightfully belong to me.
I picked out a business card, on which were the name and the phone number of the owner.Taking a deep breath, I dialed the number and explained my find to the voice on the other end.The voice came, completely emotionless, somehow, warning that they would come to me. He rang off without even saying a thank-you. The impoliteness and rudeness made me extremely annoyed. I even regretted my original decision very much. However, my conscience (良知) did not allow me to go back on my option. I told the voice where I lived and went to pick up my kids in a hurry.
Soon after we arrived home, a large black car pulled up to our house all of a sudden. The driver got out and knocked on the door. When I opened it, the driver told me that the owner of the wallet wanted me to hand over his wallet in person.

【答案】One possible version:
I was unwilling to do so but at last I agreed to go with the driver. After a while, the car stopped at his house, and I met the owner. He was a man with a not-gentle face. But soon, his face was lightened by a broad smile, and he revealed to me that all the money in the world could not take the place of the photo of his beloved daughter. So he always carried it in his wallet. His beloved daughter lived on the other side of the planet and rarely did they see each other. After sharing his story, he surprised me with an unexpected proposal.
He meant to reward me for my honesty and kind act. I was awkward with his offer of a financial reward, but he was so persistent that I could not refuse it. So I accepted and I was even more delighted when I heard that he would offer me a job to work for him under much better conditions and a higher salary than my present job. My heart was beating with a mixture of emotions — relief and gratitude. This day will forever remain in my memories. My moral values and right decisions have helped change my life for the better.
