Every year—for more than 15 years running—Amazon editors come together and read hundreds of books. My dad is a kind, gentle man, and a man of few words. Throughout my life, he offered advice rarely. But the words were always appropriate to the situation I was facing.
As a teen I sometimes struggled with making sense of the world around me. To teach me the right view of the world, he said, “All things are relative.” When I was offered the opportunity to be a manager of an organization as an undergraduate student, I asked him for advice because he was a senior manager of a large company. His advice was simple, “Only when you become the manager can you have a vision for how you can make the organization better; management isn’t about power and it’s about leadership.” I learned what I needed was not only to be responsible for my team but also to have leading ability. When I was feeling down, he explained, “Think that you make the wrong choices in life, sometimes.”
My dad is 86 now, living on his own and enjoying life while struggling with the challenges that aging brings. He keeps a positive attitude despite long pain and the losses that come in life. Although we live quite far away from each other, we talk daily on the phone to share the joys of my young family. As I tell him how we’re heading off cycling or on a trip or out to play tennis, now his typical response is, “Do it while you can.” This is very important. We can’t be sure of the future. My father’s advice is like the ancient dictum (格言) of “carpe diem” — seize the day and enjoy it to the fullest.
My dad rarely “lectured me”. He trusted me, and helped me when I needed help. His patience and wisdom have been true gifts in my life. As I doubt my ability and my motivation, I recall his most recent gift of wisdom, “Do it while you can”. It’s enough to “just get me started”.
4. Why did the author’s father tell him “All things are relative”
A. To show his extensive knowledge.
B. To encourage the author to be confident.
C. To teach him the correct understanding of the world.
D. To suggest the author overlook all difficulties in life.
5. What qualities should a manager have according to the author
A. Both responsibility and leading ability.
B. Both bravery and strength.
C. Good educational background.
D. The approach to solving problems.
6. Why does the author’s father talk with him on the phone every day
A. To complain about his boring life.
B. To know the author’s family joy.
C. To urge the author to head off cycling.
D. To ask the author to play tennis with him.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author’s father
A. Generous and sensitive. B. Reserved and strict.
C. Wise and patient. D. Enthusiastic and determined.
C
In college, Spring Break is usually associated with the beach, parties and sleepless nights, bringing about relaxation, free time and friends. Students who wish to spend their break doing something productive and rewarding, however, may choose to participate in the Alternative Break Programme. It places college students in communities both at home and abroad.
The Programme allows students to take part in various projects dealing with issues such as literacy (识字), homelessness and the environment. It includes helping kids with their lessons, raising money for families in need and collecting data for environmental research.
The hope is that, by getting themselves involved in different environments, students will have the opportunity to learn about members of communities and broaden their view. In turn, they will incorporate (融合) their experiences and lessons learned into their own communities. In a word, the Programme aims to encourage students to be active citizens and engage themselves in making a difference in society.
In the spring of 2006, about 36,000 students in the USA participated in the Alternative Break Programme.
Samantha Giacobozzi, now director of the Programme, has been on five alternative break trips herself, including trips to New Orleans, India and Dominican Republic. “I was a student who went on alternative break trips and had my life totally transformed by that experience,” she said. “Every year, we meet many students who have attended the Programme. You can see changes in their life that are connected with their alternative break experiences.”
The Programme began in 1991. Today, it has become increasingly popular with college students in the United States.

Scientists have found evidence that plants can actually hear the buzz of passing bees. And flowers are technically their ears. Based on observations of evening primroses (报春花), the team behind the new study discovered that within minutes of sensing the sound waves of nearby bee wings through flower petals (花瓣), the concentration of the sugar in the plant’s nectar (花蜜) was increased by 20 percent.
The flowers even seemed able to tune out irrelevant background noises, such as the wind. This capability could well give some plants an evolutionary advantage, say the scientists, maximizing their chances of spreading pollen (花粉).
Through experiments, the scientists discovered that plants can indeed pick up the vibrations (震动;共鸣) of sound waves, and that this might be part of the reason why many plants’ flowers are bowl shaped.
Across several experiments involving more than 650 evening primrose flowers, nectar production was measured in response to silence, sound at three different frequency levels, and a recording of the buzzing noise made by bees.
Sure enough, both the field recording of buzzing bees and the low-frequency sounds that closely matched the recording were enough to change the mix of the nectar in just three minutes. The silence and the high and mid frequency sounds had no effect. The team also tried the experiments with plants that had some flower petals removed. No change in nectar production was noted, indicating that it is indeed the flowers that have the job of the ears.
These lab tests were backed up by observations the team made in the wild. “Plants have plenty of interactions with animals, and animals both make and hear noises,” one of the team, Lilach Hadany, told Ed Yong at The Atlantic. As yet the work hasn’t been peer-reviewed, and it’s not clear precisely how the shaking is being interpreted and transformed into a signal for sweeter nectar production, but it’s an interesting first step into the study of how plants react to sounds around them.
12. What does the underlined phrase “tune out” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Find out. B. Block out. C. Check out. D. Pick out.
13. Why are many flowers bowl shaped
A. To sense sound waves. B. To absorb more sunlight.
C. To protect themselves against wind. D. To attract certain insects.
14. What did removing flower petals imply
A. Petals are key to sensing sound waves.
B. Plants don’t react to high frequency sound.
C. Plants still produce nectar without petals.
D. Petals are not necessary for nectar production.
15. What can we know from the last paragraph
A. The research is well backed up with lab tests.
B. Animals hardly communicate with plants.
C. Plants’ sound reaction mechanism is unclear.
D. The research hadn’t carried its first step.

In the small town of Willow Creek, autumn was a season of change and anticipation. The leaves on the trees turned into a mix of gold and red, and the air carried the sweet smell of ripe apples. It was the time when the annual Harvest Festival took place, a tradition that brought the community together to celebrate the reward of the season.
This year, the festival was more significant than ever. It marked the 100th anniversary, and the whole town was buzzing with excitement. Preparations were underway for weeks, with local businesses and residents decorating the streets and setting up stalls for the grand event. Among them was the Johnson family, who had been running the town’s oldest apple orchard (果园) for generations.
Emma Johnson, a high school senior, was particularly excited about the festival. She had volunteered to help her family set up their apple-themed stall, where they would sell freshly baked apple pies, apple cider, and other foods. Emma had always been passionate about her family’s orchard and the festival that showcased their hard work.
On the morning of the festival, the town square was a sea of activity. Families and friends gathered, laughter and music filled the air, and the delicious smell of various foods wafted (飘荡) through the autumn wind. Emma was busy at the Johnson family stall, serving customers and sharing stories about the history of their orchard.
As the day progressed, a friendly competition caught everyone’s attention. The town’s mayor(镇长) announced a new event for the centennial (百年纪念) celebration: a pie-baking contest. The winner would not only receive a cash prize but also the honour of having their pie featured at next year’s festival. Emma’s eyes sparkled (闪烁) with determination as she decided to enter the contest, hoping to bring pride to her family and the town. “I need my family recipe,” Emma thought, her heart racing.

【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
She ran to her grandmother’s kitchen, where the old cookbooks were kept. Her hands flew through the pages until she found it — the secret family recipe. With a quick nod to her grandmother, she mixed together the ingredients, her movements a dance of practised skill. The apples were carefully chosen, the spices measured to perfection. As she placed the pie in the oven, the scent of the mixed ingredients filled the air, promising a taste of autumn’s finest. At the contest, the judges walked over to Emma’s pie, looking serious.
When the judges took the first bite, they seemed to really enjoy it. The pie was just right, not too hard or soft, and the apples in it tasted both sweet and a little bit sour. Everyone got quiet as they waited for the judges to say who won. They announced, “Emma Johnson, for her ‘Legacy of the Orchard pie’.” People clapped and cheered, and Emma’s face lit up with pride and joy, knowing she had not only won the contest but also secured a place in Willow Creek’s history. The town celebrated her victory as a symbol of their shared heritage, and Emma knew that this day would be remembered for generations to come.
