Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money.
This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in all unexpected form.
One Sunday morning, the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard(无意中听到)our conversation. "Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home " I said yes. "Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints."

D.when you give away money, you will be rich

New research shows how kids’ brains reorganize as they learn math.
All the time you spent memorizing multiplication tables(乘法表)may have made you a better mathematician, according to a new study. A team of scientists from Stanford University, in California, have shown how the brain reorganizes itself as kids learn math.
After a certain amount of time spent practicing math, kids can put away the calculator(计算器). They don’t even need to count on their fingers. They simply know the answers to subtraction(减法), addition, and multiplication facts. The quicker kids can recall basic math facts, the easier it is for them to solve more complicated math problems.
The Stanford University researchers observed the brain activity of 28 students aged 7to 9 for the study. They took scans of the students’ brains as the students solved math calculations without the help of a calculator, pen or paper. A calculation—three plus four equals seven, for example—flashed on a screen. The students pushed a button to say if the answer was right or wrong. The scientists also recorded the response speed, and what parts of the brain became active as the kids pushed the button.
These observations showed a process called fact retrieval(事实检索). Rather than using their fingers to count, or writing out answers on a piece of paper, the students pulled the answers from memory. It’s as if the answers to basic math problems are kept in a long-term storage area in the brain, which was built from repetition. “Experience really does matter,” said Dr. Kathy Mann Koepeke.
Children make the shift(转换)from counting to fact retrieval when they are 8 to 9 years old, the study shows. This is the time when most students are learning basic addition and subtraction. When kids have basic math facts memorized, the brain has more free space to learn more complicated math.
This process has benefits for the future. The study shows as kids grow older, their answers rely more on memory and become quicker and more accurate. Less brain activity is devoted to counting. Some children make this shift quicker than others.
8.What did the researchers do when students worked out the given problems
A.They recorded the students’ brain activities.
B.They pushed a button linked to the students.
C.They noticed whether they used a calculator.
D.They found out who responded most quickly.
9.Fact retrieval is a process when the students________.
A.calculate answers using pens
B.use their fingers to count out
C.repeat the answers they remember
D.find the answers from their memory
10.What plays a key role in solving a math problem
A.Intelligence B.Experience
C.Learning method D.Constant practice
11.What happens to kids when they are 8 to 9 years old
A.Their brains are more active than before.
B.They depend on fact retrieval for answers.
C.They become more interested in learning math.
D.They work out complicated problems more quickly.
Celebrities (名人) have all sorts of strange diets. One of the latest diets among celebrities is the “OMAD”. Instead of only fasting on certain days or only eating your meals during a specific time window, people following OMAD eat all their day’s calories in one single, large meal.
One study so far has looked at the effect of OMAD in humans. In this study, participants (参与者) were given the same number of calories to eat each day. For half of the study, participants ate these calories in a single meal, before switching (转换) and eating their daily calories in three meals. Each meal pattern was only followed for an 11-day period-not very long at all. The one meal was taken between 5 p. m. and 7 p. m., ensuring a particular flavour to the timing. Only 11 participants completed the study, suggesting a limited results.
When participants ate just one meal per day, they saw a greater reduction in their body weight, indicating a potential association between OMAD and weight loss. However, participants also experienced greater reductions in bone density (密度) when eating just one meal a day, suggesting a need to vary the diet for health. This could lead to reduced muscle function and greater risk of bone fractures (骨折) if the diet was to be followed for a longer period.
While these results may indicate that OMAD could have benefits for some aspects of health, there’s still a lot we don’t know about it. It will be important for future studies to investigate (调查) the effect of OMAD in a larger number of participants and in other groups of people, as this study only included thin, young adults. It will also be important for studies to look at the effect of OMAD over a longer period of time, and to conduct these trials in a real-life setting.
12.What is the primary characteristic of the OMAD diet according to the text
A.One large meal per day. B.Low calorie eating.
C.Plain flavour. D.Multiple small meals.
13.According to the study mentioned, what effect did the OMAD diet have on participants
A.Weight gain. B.Weight loss. C.Increase in fat. D.Increase in height.
14.Which group of people were involved in the study discussed in the text
A.Elderly people. B.Overweight adults. C.Young people. D.Children.
15.What does the text suggest about future research on the OMAD diet
A.Stopping unnecessary studies. B.Reducing participants.
C.Exploring long-term effects. D.Testing only in the lab.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a little dog followed them home after school. It had short legs and long lovely ears, with a fawn-colored coat. It was the cutest dog I had ever seen and the girls begged me to keep it. The dog was barely twelve weeks old. It had no collar or identifying marks of any sort, so I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an advertisement in the local paper’s lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone showed up. To convince myself, I thought its owners should come looking for it if they really loved it.
By the end of the week, the dog was part of our family. It was very intelligent and good with the girls. Despite the excuses I had come up with, I found myself checking the lost-and-found in the local paper. One day the following week, a particular advertisement jumped out at me and my heart pounded (怦怦跳) with fear for what I read. Someone was begging for the return of a lost dog in the neighborhood of our grade school. They sounded desperate (绝望). My hand shook. I couldn’t bring myself to pick up the phone.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the advertisement. I quickly put the paper away in the drawer and continued with my dusting. I never said a word about it to the kids or my husband.
By now we had named the dog. It looked like a Molly, so that was what we called it. It followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, it was one step behind them. When they did housework, it was there to lend a hand.
There was only one problem with this otherwise perfect picture: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the dog they were desperately seeking. It would be the most difficult thing I’d ever done.

My Intelligent Robot for the Elderly
As we all know, with the development of economy, people have to face various pressures. They don’t have enough time to attend to the old people in their families, which has become а social problem. Tо solve this problem, I designed a kind of household robot, which is intended to take care of old people.
It can cook meals at а fixed time which can be adjusted according to individual needs. It can also accompany old people in having а chat, playing chess, and doing exercise. Moreover, it can deal with emergencies. For example, if an old man falls ill suddenly, the robot will call doctors for help. It would be a great help for us if we own such а robot.
I hope everyone can find my robot beneficial to them.
47. With mixed feelings, I finally picked up the phone. Secretly I was praying no one would answer, but a woman did. As I described the dog to her in detail, her voice shook with excitement and she wanted to come right over. Within minutes I heard a vehicle pull up at the driveway and some footsteps stop at the door. Head cradled in my hands and heart hammering, a thousand thoughts crossed my mind: I could pretend I wasn’t home or tell her, “I’m sorry, you have the wrong address.” But it was too late: the bell rang and Molly was barking. Opening the door, I saw a woman with a little girl sitting in a small wheelchair.
I asked the woman to come in and she quickly bent over and hugged Molly tightly. One look at Molly, and the little girl’s face lit up. “Here, Lucy,” she yelled. “Come here!” Molly instantly obeyed, wagging her tail wildly. My heart sank. Seemingly sensing my feelings, the woman explained that Lucy was more than just a puppy to her daughter, who was left crippled for life in an accident. “Lucy gave her a reason to live,” she choked. Suddenly I felt relieved. God has blessed me with so much, I thought. As they pulled out of the driveway, I smiled, knowing I had done the right thing—that puppy was exactly where she belonged.
