Pablo Guerrero has spent his life exploring the cacti (仙人掌) in the Atacama Desert. He first saw them during a family trip along Chile’s coast and soon fell in love with the strange shapes and bright
flowers of the cacti. Later, as a researcher, he studied the impacts of climate change and human activities,
like illegal poaching (偷盗), on these special plants.
Guerrero began visiting the Atacama as a researcher in the early 2000s and observed the plants that he had admired as a child. Their ability to live in such tough conditions impressed him. However, he grew concerned as human activities might make it even harder for the species to continue to survive.
The cacti in the Atacama are particularly subject to changes in their habitat. Many species live in very small areas, sometimes just a few square kilometers. And in the driest reaches of the desert, the cacti depend on fog alone for water. But the desert is getting hotter and drier, and in some places, the fog is disappearing.
At the same time, mining and energy projects have led to more roads, making the fragile (脆弱的) environment more accessible. This change has brought more litter and broken-down cactus remains along the roadsides. These remains do not disappear quickly, making the desert look even more lifeless.
Recently, Guerrero learned that many cacti are being stolen at the Chilean border. As people around the world grow interested in having cacti as houseplants, theft has increased which has put the species in danger, along with climate change.
Determined to help save the Atacama’s cacti, Guerrero has been exploring how the cacti survive in such a terrible environment and working with local and international groups to stop poaching. He

Characteristics, such as ability to follow gestures (手势) and reaction to unsolvable tasks in 3- to 7-month-old dogs, were related to desirable behaviors in those puppies (幼犬) in adulthood, researchers report in the May Applied Animal Behaviour Science. These findings could help pet owners determine the best way to train their dogs and what kinds of activities the animals may enjoy as they age.
Katriina Tiira and her team at the University of Helsink i invited pet owners, show-dog handlers and working-dog trainers to bring their dogs for cognition (认知) tests designed to show how dogs think and learn.
227 dogs between the ages of 3 months and 7 months were directed to do things like follow gestures pointing at a bowl with treats, attempt unsolvable tasks or access treats placed in a clear box with an opening in the back. 99 of those dogs repeated the tests as adults, between ages 1 and 8. Many characteristics remained almost the same from puppyhood to adulthood, the team found, especially in dogs that were tested at 6 months or 7months old.
Researchers then surveyed some owners about their now-adult animals’ behavior and trainability, and compared that data with dog test results for 227 dogs. The surveys showed that dogs who quickly learned to follow gestures became more trainable as adults. Puppies that showed fear when meeting a stranger often remained shy around new people.
These findings offer a clear way to match training and activities to each dog’s natural strengths, helping every dog grow into a happy, well-adjusted adult. For example, Tiira suggests that dogs that tend to stay away from strangers might have lower self-confidence. “What I would do with these kinds of dogs is that I would give them a lot of experiences and feelings of success in all training,” she says, adding that encouraging them—as long as they are well-behaved—and creating positive experiences in new situations might help as well.
28. What did the researchers find in their study
A. How a dog follows gestures in a strange environment.
B. When pet owners should correct their dogs’ mistakes.
C. How a puppy’s thinking ability affects its adult behaviors.
D. When working-dog trainers start to test a dog’s response.
29. What were the dogs directed to do in the experiments
A. Perform some tasks with treats. B. Place a bowl next to a clear box.

A. To discover a treatment for animal diseases.
B. To praise these owners for their achievement.
C. To match test scores with behaviors of adult dogs.
D. To seek advice from these owners on raising pets.
31. What can we infer about the findings from the last paragraph
A. They help pet owners live a peaceful life.
B. They find the strengths of all the pet dogs.
C. They show different dogs have similar characters.
D. They can form the basis of how to train the dogs.

Mars once had a thick, warm air rich in carbon dioxide (CO ), but that carbon has been trapped in its rocks for thousands of years. That’s the story shown by a hidden secret of carbon-bearing minerals unearthed by NASA’s Curiosity rover (探 测 器 ) along its route up a Martian mountain. This finding gives us the first clear proof of a carbon cycle on Mars, and shows why the planet’s life-friendly climate disappeared.
Long ago, Mars had abundant water and a warm climate, supported by a thick CO atmosphere. But today, the planet is a cold, dry desert with almost no atmosphere. Scientists long wondered where all that CO went. Geochemist Benjamin Tutolo and his team thought it must be locked in carbonate (碳酸 盐) minerals, but previous searches hadn't found enough to explain the loss.
In 2022 and 2023, Curiosity drove across a region where the rocks change from soft, wet clay— marking the great drying of Mars. The rover drilled four samples (样品) from different rocks and used its onboard lab to study them. The research team identified siderite, a carbonate mineral that forms when water, rock and heat interact and then dry out. Each sample held between 5 and 10 percent siderite by weight—much more than expected. “We found it here, for the first time,” Tutolo said. “That’s the main point that makes this cool here. This discovery brings us much closer to solving the carbon mystery.”
This work provides a great explanation for how Mars could once support rivers and lakes, yet later lost its warm air. Looking ahead, scientists hope to match orbital data with ground findings and, finally, return samples to Earth for further research. In the meantime, Curiosity’s discovery shines a bright new light on Mars’ change from a habitable world to the dry desert we see today.
32. Where is the carbon that once kept Mars warm according to the text
A. It has escaped into the atmosphere. B. It has been locked in Mars’ rocks.
C. It is trapped in the lakes and rivers. D. It is drawn by a sea of burning sands.
33. Which best explains the underlined word “abundant” in paragraph 2
A. Plentiful. B. Dirty. C. Salty. D. Drinkable.
34. How did Tutolo feel about the discovery
A. Worried. B. Doubtful. C. Excited. D. Regretful.
35. What can be learned about the discovery
A. It mismatches these ground findings.
B. It accounts for climate change on our planet.
C. It brings us closer to solving energy problems.
D. It might explain why Mars lost its habitable climate.

How to Use Less Plastic When You Are on the Road
Plastic can take many years to break down, so it’s a matter of urgency that we all need to reduce plastic use. The good news is that small changes in our travel habits can make a big difference. 36
Stop buying bottled water. This is important because understandably one of the main concerns for travelers is access to safe drinking water. However, there are other solutions that do not involve buying plastic bottles everywhere you go. 37 That’s because most hotels usually offer boiled water.
38 It’s really easy to find lightweight, reusable bags that can pack up small and go in the pocket of your backpack on the road. If you always have a few with you wherever you go, then you are sure not to need to use plastic bags.
Use a bamboo toothbrush. Bamboo is biodegradable (可降解的) and grows rapidly, making it an ideal alternative to plastic. Adopting a bamboo toothbrush is a simple yet powerful step toward sustainable travel. 39 The great part about travelling with a bamboo toothbrush is that everyone else will see you using it and might be inspired to reduce their plastic usage too!
Bring a camping bowl. 40 However, the convenience often comes at a cost—single-use plastic containers piled high in landfills. If you travel with your own camping bowl, you could save a lot of that plastic going straight into the trash can.
A. Plan ahead for your travel.
B. Carry reusable shopping bags. C. You can take a refillable bottle.
D. This is key for anyone’s plastic-free journey.
E. Here are ways travelers can reduce their plastic use.
F. Enjoying global street food is a highlight of travelling.
G. The following tips tell how to save money during travelling.

Jason and his two-year-old daughter walked into a busy airport. The girl wore n bright red hat and smiled as she looked around at the tall windows and long lines of people. The hall was filled with voices, rolling suitcases, and the announcements over loudspeakers. They had come early to make sure they had enough time for their flight.
They reached the check in counter (柜台) well before their flight. Jason smiled at the agent (工作人 员) and placed two small bugs on the scale. Jason gently lifted his daughter onto the counter beside his suitcase. The agent asked, “May I have your tickets, please ” The agent scanned his boarding pass, then looked at the girl, “I’m sorry,” she said, in a soft but firm voice, “your daughter needs her own ticket. Our rules say any child over twenty-four months needs a full-price seal.”
Jason blinked (眨眼睛) in surprise. He mistakenly thought his daughter was free because of her age. He looked down at his daughter’s small feet and remembered how he had held her when she was a baby. “But she is only two years old.” Jason said softly, “I did not know she needed a ticket,” The agent shook her head, “I know it is confusing. But our system will not let me continue without the extra ticket.”
Jason took a deep breath and checked his wallet. Inside were a few bills, a credit card, and a hope that he could somehow fix this. He turned to the agent, “I don’t have enough money right now. The ticket
costs... ” She tapped the screen. “Seven hundred forty-nine dollars,” He swallowed hard and whispered,
“I do not...” He felt his face going red as he stepped back from the counter. He bent down and hugged his daughter close. “Sweetie, I need to make a quick call,” he said. Then he walked away, with phone in hand, his steps slow and heavy.

第四部分 写作
第一节 范文一
Changes in Spring Festival Celebrations
With technological advances, Spring Festival celebrations have undergone significant changes.
Firstly, digital red envelopes via mobile apps have largely replaced traditional paper ones. Secondly, virtual family reunions through video calls allow people to connect instantly across distances. Moreover, online shopping platforms make festive preparations more convenient than ever.
In my view, while technology brings efficiency, we should preserve traditional customs. Lighting firecrackers and writing Spring Festival couplets embody cultural heritage. Striking a balance between innovation and tradition will keep the festival’s spirit alive.
范文二
Changes in Spring Festival Celebrations
With the development of technology, Spring Festival celebrations have changed a lot.
In the past, people used to visit relatives in person, but now they prefer cloud New Year greetings through video calls. Instead of writing couplets by hand, many choose digital ones. Also, online red envelopes and lucky money apps have replaced traditional paper red envelopes.
In my opinion, these changes show that traditions can adapt to modern life. While we enjoy the convenience of technology, we should still value the spirit of family reunion. It’s important to keep the warmth of the festival alive, no matter how we celebrate.
范文三
Changes in Spring Festival Celebrations
With technology developing, Spring Festival celebrations have changed greatly.
People used to visit relatives face-to-face, but now many send wishes through phones or computers. Giving red envelopes has also become digital. Firecrackers are not allowed in many places, while watching shows online or playing games are new fun activities.
I think these changes bring convenience and new fun. Technology helps us connect easily, even when far apart. However, the warm feelings and meaningful traditions of the festival should always stay with us. We can keep traditions while enjoying the changes technology brings.
While Jason stood afew feet away, a kind-looking woman came to the counter. “I will pay for the ticket,” she said. The agent paused in surprise, then nodded. The woman folded the pass and handed it to the girl. Moments later, Jason returned to the counter. He looked at his daughter’s ticket in her hand. “How did this happen ” The agent pointed to the woman, “This kind lady paid for it.” The father turned to the woman. “Thank you,” he said. “My name is Jason. I want to repay you. May I have your name, please ”
The woman smiled and shook her head, saying “You don’t need to repay me.” “I just wanted to help,” she added. “It was nothing big, really. Enjoy your trip with your daughter.” Before Jason could try again to learn her name or offer his thanks in some other way, she turned around and walked down the line of people waiting to check in. Jason watched her and thought about the stranger’s act of kindness. He felt both grateful and humbled. He looked at his daughter’s red hat and decided to teach her to help others, just as the stranger had helped them.
范文二
While Jason stood a few feet away, a kind-looking woman came to the counter. She noticed the little girl in the red hat and the worried agent. After asking about the problem, she gently put her credit card on the desk. “I’ll pay for the child’s ticket,” she said with a warm smile. The agent was surprised but quickly finished the payment. When Jason returned, he saw the boarding passes and couldn’t believe
his eyes. The agent pointed to the woman, “This lady helped you.” Jason felt his eyes get wet.
The woman smiled and shook her head, saying “You don’t need to repay me.” She touched the girl’ s red hat and said, “My grandson is about her age. I just want to help.” Jason held his daughter tightly and said, “Thank you so much. We’re going to see her sick grandma. You saved our trip.” The woman waved and left. Jason looked at his daughter, who was smiling again. He held her hand and walked to the gate, feeling lucky and warm in his heart.
