Here are some pet-friendly universities in the UK and US.
University of Illinois
Students are allowed up to two pets in each apartment, as well as a fish tank of no more than 50 gallons.
To keep a pet, you will need to get approval from the Family & Graduate housing department at the University of Illinois. You will have to provide proof that your pet is up to date with its vaccinations(疫苗), and pay a monthly US$30 pet fee, which is non-refundable(不可退款的).
Your pet can’t be left for extended periods of time, and if there’s evidence that you’ve left it alone due to vacation or illness, the university may remove it.

University of British Columbia Students can take advantage of the university’s B.A.R. K program, which uses the calming power of therapy dogs to help them.
B.A.R. K started at the University of British Columbia, after an assistant professor called Dr. John-Tyler Binfet noticed that he couldn’t walk across campus without students running over to play with his dog, Frances. The students told him they were homesick and missed their pets, which encouraged Binfet to establish B.A.R. K as a way of fighting their loneliness.
University of Oxford
The University of Oxford is famous for its resident pets, who happily wander around college grounds. Many Oxford colleges have their own tortoise and take part in the annual Corpus Christi tortoise race.
Although you are not allowed to keep your own pet as a student, several Oxford colleges hold dog petting and walking therapy sessions.

Recorded lectures have become a part of course instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic, and college students often try to watch these recordings at double their normal speed or even faster. But does comprehension (理解) suffer as a result
Surprisingly, no—up to a point. A new UCLA study shows that students remember information quite well when watching recorded lectures at up to twice their actual speed. But once they exceed (超过) that limit, things begin to get a little unclear.
The researchers divided 231 students into four groups and had them watch two lecture videos. One group watched at normal speed, one at 1.5 times normal speed, another at double speed and the final group at 2.5 times normal speed. Then they were given comprehension tests on the videos.
The normal-speed group averaged 26 correct answers out of 40, while the double-time group scored 25 (about the same as the 1.5-speed group). The 2.5-speed group didn’t do as well, answering only about 22 questions correctly. A week later, the same groups were given different tests related to the two videos to assess what they’d remembered. The normal-speed group averaged 24 correct answers out of 40, the 1.5-speed and double-speed groups averaged 21, and 2.5-speed students averaged 20.
“Surprisingly, video speed had little effect on both immediate and delayed comprehension until earners go beyond twice the normal speed,” explains lead author Dillon Murphy.
Murphy says students should be careful about how they use faster playback in terms of finding optimal study strategies. If students choose to speed up lecture playback, Murphy says, they should use the time saved for additional learning.
“While our study didn’t show obvious drawbacks to watching lecture videos at up to double the normal speed, we are against using this strategy to simply save time,” Murphy says. “Students can deepen learning if they spend the time saved on things like reviewing flashcards or taking practice tests.”
8.Why does the author mention the question in paragraph 1
A.To express his doubts. B.To compare different ideas.
C.To describe recorded lectures. D.To introduce the topic for discussion.
9.How did the researchers get the findings
A.By building models. B.By using earlier studies.
C.By comparing experimental data. D.By interviewing teachers and students.
10.What does the underlined word “optimal” in paragraph 6 refer to
A.Best. B.Simplified. C.Flexible. D.Acceptable.
11.What is the purpose of the study
A.To check the speed of understanding.
B.To prove how important taking notes is.
C.To find the most appropriate learning approach.
D.To see how video viewing speed affects learning effects.
A survey of university backgrounds of heads of major global companies found that Harvard in the United States was the most likely place to study in.
The Times Higher Educationranked the universities which are attended by chief executive officers(CEO) of Fortune Global 500 companies. There are four US universities in the top 10, with three from France, two from Japan and one from South Korea. The highest ranked UK university is Oxford in 21st place.
This league table, described as the Alma Mater Index, shows which universities around the world taught the bosses of some of the world’s biggest companies. One in 20 had a degree from a single institution, Harvard. This included Margaret C. Whitman of Hewlett-Packard, Jeffrey R. Immelt of General Electric and Vittorio Colao of Vodafone.
But the top 10 for producing business leaders does not contain all the usual names that appear at the top of university rankings. Oxford and Cambridge are absent, but the University of Pennsylvania in the US and Keio University in Japan are included, along with three French universities, headed by the Ecole Polytechnique.
Across the top 100, universities from the USdominate, followed by universities in China, Japan, France and Germany. There are more CEOs who went to university in Asia than in Europe. In terms of national comparisons, UK universities produced the sixth highest number of global chief executives, with Oxford in 21st place and Cambridge in 45th place.
But even though Harvard might have taught the biggest number of bosses from the top 500 companies, it was not attended by any of the heads of the biggest 10 companies, who were from a more diverse range of universities.
Royal Dutch Shell is headed by a graduate of Zurich University of Applied Sciences; Walmart is headed by a student of Georgia Tech and Exxon Mobil has a chief executive from the University of Texas, Austin. Three of the leaders of these biggest companies went to university in China and the head of Volkswagen went to university in Stuttgart.
12.How many Asian universities are among the world’s top 10 universities for global CEOs
A.One. B.Two.
C.Three. D.Four.
13.What can we learn about the UK universities
A.None of them are among the top 10 list of the survey.
B.They produced the second most number of global CEOs.
C.They performed better than French universities on the list.
D.Cambridge University ranks highest among them.
14.Which university produced the greatest number of global CEOs
A.Pennsylvania. B.Harvard.
C.Cambridge. D.Zurich.
15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.The Rankings of the Famous Universities in the World
B.The Top Universities in the World
C.The Ideal Universities for Middle-school Students
D.The Rankings of the Universities Producing the Most Global CEOs
How to increase the “amount of wisdom” in your brain
This world is filled with challenges. In order to survive in it, humans need to be wise. Wisdom provides you with perspective when you are in terrible situations, which is like a beacon (灯塔) of hope in the darkness. However, you have to remember, this is a journey and not a destination. 16
Try experiencing new opportunities.
Variety is the spice of life but experiencing new opportunities is also how you gain wisdom. You will never grow from being in your comfort zone, which is why you need to get out of it. This is the only way you will gain wisdom and become better. You can try learning new skills that were not on your bucket list (愿望清单).
17
You have preferences which help you out, but you need to set them aside most of the time. You should be receptive to different views. Always develop a sense of curiosity, and observe the world from different angles, which will facilitate your development. 18 Train your mind to be a judgment-free space for ideas. If you are humble, then you will always get to experience something new.
Never back away from learning.
You must be the kind of person who learns something new every day; you must develop a thirst for knowledge. Take new classes, read books, listen to educational podcasts, and the list goes on and on. If something confuses you, surf the Internet and clear out your problems. 19 In the end, you will be able to tackle a problem from different angles, making everything easier.
Learn and grow from your mistakes.
All of us make mistakes in life, but it is the acknowledgement of mistakes that makes us grow and do better next time. 20 Stop blaming other people for your mistakes and admit where you went wrong. Your best teacher will always be your last mistake, so learn the best from it.
A.Open yourself to diverse perspectives.
B.Here are some strategies that you can use to get wiser.
C.Never base your point of view on the most popular opinion.
D.All of these activities will strengthen your critical-thinking skills.
E.We can reflect on what made us fail, so that we may improve ourselves.
F.What you do all day will be able to help you acquire knowledge you want.

Jennifer, a middle school student, was in Mr Green’s class. After only a month at school, she began to be home on a regular basis asking for plenty of crayons, paper, etc. At first, her mother, Sophia, just dutifully provided whatever she needed, never questioning her.
After ongoing requests for the items for several weeks, Sophia became concerned and asked her, “Jennifer, what are you doing with your stationery (文具) ” However, Jennifer would always respond with an answer that satisfied Sophia.
One day, after supplying the same things to Jennifer, Sophia seriously asked her once again, “Jennifer! What is exactly going on with your stationery ” Knowing her excuses would no longer work, Jennifer bent her head and kept silence. With her mind filled with confusion, Sophia lifted her daughter’s chin and looked into her eyes, asking, “What is wrong Are you making money by reselling school supplies ” Sophia waited for what seemed like a long time for Jennifer to answer.
“Mom,” Jennifer said, “I’ve known a boy, called Jack, who is a student in the nearby school sponsored by a charity. He is an immigrant and has two brothers. He doesn’t have enough stationery to do his work. He only has two crayons to color with, and his art paper is messy. I have been putting the new stationery you bought me in his desk before the others came in, so he still doesn’t know I gave it to him. Our teacher, Mr Green, always told us to be an honest person. I knew I didn’t do it. Mom, don’t be angry. I didn’t mean to tell you a lie, but I didn’t want anyone to know it was me.”
Sophia stood there in disbelief. Jennifer had took on the role of an adult and tried to hide her good intentions. Sophia hugged Jennifer tightly, saying, “Baby, I will never get mad at you for wanting to help someone, but why didn’t you just come and tell me ” This time, Sophia did not have to wait for her quick answer, but decided to act.
