Yi Peng Lantern Festival is similar to the Lantern Festival in China. On both festivals people make lanterns. Midsummer’s Day is similar to the Dragon Boat Festival. Both celebrate the start of summer, though the latter takes on other meanings as it develops. The Day of the Dead is similar to the Qingming Festival. Both festivals are celebrated for people to remember their loved ones who are no longer with them.

How can you learn about foreign customs and traditions
I can learn about foreign customs and traditions by travelling to different countries.
I can also make friends with foreigners and ask them about their customs and traditions. It is easy to find information about foreign customs and traditions on the Internet. There are many films and TV programmes that I can watch to learn about foreign customs and traditions as well.

Describe a festival you have experienced. What happened What was it like
That Spring Festival, the whole family crowded into grandma's old house. My mother and aunt were kneading bread and dumplings. I secretly made a dumpling with gold ingots and was laughed at by my mother, who clapped my hands on the back. In the evening, Dad set off fireworks. Sparks shot up into the sky, filling the night sky with golden red. My younger sister was so scared that she crawled into my arms but opened her eyes wide to look. The elders were cracking sunflower seeds, the red envelopes were warm, and when opening them, the sound of banknotes mingled with the sound of firecrackers, full of anticipation. That feeling was like being wrapped in a sun-dried cotton quilt, solid and warm.

Like the Indian wedding in Alex's travel journal, the Chinese wedding I have been to also took place in a hotel. There were a lot of guests too, but most of them were not dressed in formal clothes. The bride's dress was also different. She wore a traditional Chinese wedding dress in red. There was no dancing after the ceremony at the Chinese wedding.

Besides weddings and festivals, what other elements are an important part of a country's customs and traditions Make a list and describe them.

Funeral rituals are an important part of a country's traditions. They can vary quite a lot in different places around the world. At traditional Chinese funerals, people wear white, while in Western countries people usually wear black.
It is also important to honour new life. In China, a celebration is held when a baby turns one month old. This is traditionally the time when the baby is formally introduced to the extended family and friends.
Table manners are highly regarded on formal occasions. According to Chinese customs, no one should sit down or begin to eat before the host or guest of honour has done so.

The travel journal about Alex's experience at the Rio Carnival uses the method of contrast to describe the scenes before and during the street party. Find the sentences in the travel journal and use contrast to describe the scenes before and during a dragon boat race.
Sentences using contrast:
I could see a group of around 20 Brazilian dancers and a band in fancy costumes standing in the street. Some of them carried flags, which blew in the wind. The crowd waited with excitement.
Then there was an explosion of bright colour and lively music, and the group jumped into action. The band started playing an energetic samba beat, the dancers twisted and turned, and the crowd began to cheer, clap and sing. The whole group started marching down the street. The Carnival current carried us through the ever-growing sea of people, dancing all the way.

The travel journal about Alex's experience at the Rio Carnival uses the method of contrast to describe the scenes before and during the street party. Find the sentences in the travel journal and use contrast to describe the scenes before and during a dragon boat race.
Possible answer
The beautifully coloured dragon boats sat alongside each other on the still water with their crews ready, oars in hand. A large holiday crowd had gathered by the lake to watch the dragon boat race. Silence settled over them as the starter raised his gun. The crack of the gun broke the tension and the crowd exploded into cheers and screams of encouragement. The loud beats of drums were ringing in their ears as the boats sped away across the lake.
