Welcome to Computer-based English Listening and Speaking Test. CELST is a module of National Matriculation English Test (Guangdong Version), consisting of three parts. Part A is Reading Aloud. In this part, you are required to act as a role and complete three communicative tasks: listen to a speaker, ask the speaker three questions and then answer five questions from the computer acting as another role. Part C is Retelling. In this part, you are required to listen to a monologue, and then retell what you have heard in your own words.
Our oceans give us life and food. They can feed one billion people every day forever. But plastic waste is hurting our oceans. Every minute, a truckload of plastic goes into the sea. Plastic floats on top, mixes with water, and sits at the bottom of the ocean. It never disappears. Instead, it breaks into tiny pieces called microplastics. This plastic is killing sea animals. Turtles, whales, and small sea creatures eat it. Even humans eat and drink plastic without knowing it. We can help by using less plastic and choosing plastic-free products. Together, we can save our oceans.

你为什么选择步行?
Because I wanted to challenge myself. You know, I've always been interested in the Silk Road and I'd like to explore it with my own feet. I believed I was fit enough for the challenge since I had years of experience in long distance running. Still, I made a lot of preparations for such a long journey.
Q1:
A1:
Why did you choose to walk
你是如何准备这次旅行的?
At first, I spent several months preparing the necessary travel documents. And then I bought walking boots and sleeping bags for the journey. Besides, I read a lot about the cultures of the countries along the Silk Road. I even tried to learn some of their languages, but they are too difficult for me.
Q2:
A2:
How did you prepare for this trip
你怎样与不同国家的人沟通?
Mostly through a translation device. I also used body language and even drawings. Luckily, most people I met were very kind and helpful. One cold night, I got lost in a village in northwest China. A local family offered me a hot meal and a place to stay for the night. It was a simple act of kindness, but it meant the world to me at that time.

A Missing Pill
Mary had always enjoyed her quiet life after retirement. Her life was changed when she had to look after her two-year-old grandson Tom for the summer all by herself. One morning, Mary was reading a book when Tom was playing with his toy soldier by her side. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Thinking it was all right to leave Tom alone for a short while, Mary stood up and went to answer the door. It was her new neighbor who came to give her some homemade cakes. They chatted for a few minutes. Then Mary went back to Tom with the cakes. What she saw shocked her. Her medicine bottle was lying open on the floor and her blue sleeping pills were everywhere. Worrying that Tom might have taken her pills, Mary immediately rushed to him. She checked his mouth and found nothing there. Then Mary collected the pills and counted them quickly. One pill was missing. Mary was terrified and decided to take Tom to the hospital right away. When Mary picked up Tom from the floor, a blue pill fell off from the toy soldier in Tom's hand. It was the missing pill.
Practice makes perfect.
