In the past ten years, great progress has been made in technology. It seems like everything has been reinvented and greatly improved. However, there is one thing that is different. It was invented over 100 years ago but remained (保持) unchanged until now. It is the white cane (盲杖) used by blind people. Many blind people have used this kind of white cane for a long time. However, it has seen no real improvement, until a blind engineer named Kursat decided to make a difference.
Kursat is from Turkey(土耳其). He lost his eyesight at the age of 2. He well understands the difficulties and challenges that the blind face. That’s because he himself is a blind person. As a blind person, when he is at the subway station, he doesn’t know which is his exit (出口). When walking on the street, he may run into obstacles.
Kursat decided to do something to help the blind. He invented a new kind of cane called the WeWalk. This smart cane is equipped (配备) with built — in speakers and different sensors (传感器). The sensors can “see” obstacles in front of it, like a wall or a car, and then the cane will vibrate (震动) to tell the user. It can also connect to the Internet through Bluetooth. It can give the user information about the place he or she is visiting, such as the name of the store or the direction of the library. Besides, the cane can be folded, so it’s easy to carry. What’s more, the price of the WeWalk is around $500, which is relatively cheap compared with other high-tech products for the blind. This invention will bring great changes to the lives of blind people.

On February 25th, some elderly care robots were shown to the public. These robots are great helpers for old people and bring lots of convenience (便利) and happiness to their lives.
These robots are very useful in daily life. They can remind old people to take medicine at the right time. As for those who have trouble walking, the robots can walk beside them. They use sensors (传感器) to know if the old people are not steady and stop them from falling. Some robots can even go outside with old people, like walking in the park or going to the nearby shops because they have navigation systems (导航系统).
Loneliness is a big problem for many old people. But these robots can be good friends. They can talk to old people. They can tell interesting stories, like fairy tales or stories from history. They can also talk about everyday things, such as the weather, local news, or the latest TV shows. This not only makes old people feel less lonely but also helps their minds stay active. The robots can also do small jobs. They can pick up light things that old people drop, like a book or glasses. For housework, they can do easy things like cleaning the living room, folding clothes, or sweeping the floor. This helps old people keep their homes clean without getting too tired.
In the future, these robots will probably have even more uses. They may be like family doctors. For example, they can check heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature all the time. If there is anything wrong, the robot can quickly tell family members or doctors. They might also be able to help with more difficult medical things, like helping to dress a wound (伤口) with a doctor’s help.
As technology gets better, making these robots will cost less. Then more families can afford them. When more people can buy these robots, more money will be put into making them better. So, the robots will work even better and be of higher quality (质量).

Sirish Subash, a 14-year-old student from the US, recently won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
He made a tool that can find pesticides (杀虫剂) on fruit and vegetables. This won him $25,000 (about 180,000 yuan) and the title (称号) of “Best Young Scientist in America”.
Subash’s idea for the tool came from a simple but important question. His mother always told him to wash fruit before eating it. The boy wondered if the action did any good. He learned that 70 percent of fruit and vegetables have pesticides. They can bring possible health problems like cancer (癌症). Washing only gets away part of the pesticides. “If we could find them, we could avoid eating them and lower the risk of those health problems,” Subash said.
This led Subash to invent PestiSCAND.It is a small tool that people can take with them. It works by shining lights and seeing how light reflects off food. With the help of a sensor (传感器), a screen and an AI learning model, the tool can find out if there are pesticides around.
To use it, users must point PestiSCAND at the fruit or vegetable to see if they need to wash it again. They can check the results in an app on their phones. During testing, PestiSCAND was right more than 85 percent of the time in finding pesticides. Subash plans to improve his tool and hopes to get it to market by the time he starts college.

Is your schoolbag too heavy Taking heavy schoolbags brings us a lot of health problems. It’s really bad. But now we have e-schoolbags. They will help us.
An e-schoolbag is much lighter than a usual schoolbag. Maybe we can call the schoolbag an e-textbook. It is a small computer for students. It is as small as a usual book, but it can still have all the things for study, such as textbooks, exercise books and so on. The students can read the text page by page on the screen, take notes, or even send e-mails to their teachers. They only need to put the right chip into the e-schoolbags. Different people have different opinions on the e-schoolbags. Some people say that it can be easy to carry them. Some say they are not good for students’ eyes.
