Need a reason to be happy Then you will be happy to know that March 20th is the International Day of Happiness.
The United Nations set up the International Day of Happiness in 2012 to remind us that happiness is a basic human goal (目标) and right (权利).
It was celebrated for the first time in 2013. On that day, we celebrated hundreds of “Happy Heroes”—those who did so much to bring happiness to others. They helped the homeless to live a comfortable life and the poor kids to go to school.
The 2014 Day of Happiness actions asked people to share pictures of making them happy. People all over the world showed their favorite pictures on the Internet. “It’s exciting to see so many people sharing photos of what makes them happy.” Joe, a senior high school student from Canada said. The 2015 Day of Happiness actions gave attention on relationships. Modern society is leaving more and more people feeling lonely. On that day, thousands of people all around the world reached out to make new connections with others. They visited their neighbors, gave calls to the doctors they didn’t know very well, drove the strangers to stations for free…

Have you ever thought about where the things you use come from If the things you use do not come from nature, they are man-made. We use millions of man-made things every day.
To begin with, you have to tell what things are natural. Now take a look at the beautiful river covered with ice. The ice on the river is natural while the ice in the fridge is man-made.
How about glue, pencils and money
Is glue natural or man-made Well, glue used to be natural in the past. People just found some materials sticky (粘的). Then they were used as glue. In modern times, many glue companies put at least four materials together in a new way to produce glue. So glue is changed to be man-made.
Pencils are made mostly from wood, graphite (石墨) and clay that come from nature. The materials are changed by adding other materials and heating to make something new—a pencil!
Think about money! We have paper money made of paper and coins made of metals, so they are natural, right No. Its production is not an easy task. Creating money requires special machines and printing skills to make the paper or metals into money.
We are living in a world full of man-made things. Is that a good thing or a bad thing You must decide for yourself.

Study is an important experience for everyone. After twenty years, I can still remember my first day at school. I was only 6 years old at that time. It was a very big room. I sat at the desk near the window, but I couldn’t see anything because the window was too high. There was a big map of the world on the wall and an old blackboard. I don’t think I was worried or afraid because I wanted to be a teacher at that time. There was another little boy next to me. He sat there and kept silent at first. Then he began to cry, because he didn’t want to stay there.
More and more students came in, but the boy didn’t stop crying. “Mom, I want to go home,” he cried again and again. Later, the teacher came in. She went to the little boy, and said something to him. I couldn’t hear what she said. Soon the boy stopped crying and began to smile. I thought the teacher was a superwoman and I admired her very much. I wanted to be a teacher like her.
Even to this day, I still don’t know what the teacher said to the little boy.

No matter how carefully we check a composition (作文), it seems there’s always one more little mistake waiting to be discovered. The following tips may help you find your mistakes before anybody else does.
First of all, give it a rest. If time permits (允许), set your composition aside for a few hours after you’ve finished it, and then read it carefully to correct mistakes with fresh eyes.
Secondly, look for one type of problem at a time. Read through your composition several times, concentrating first on sentence structures, then word choice, then spelling, and finally punctuation (标点). As the saying goes, if you look for trouble, you’re likely to find it.
If you don’t believe in yourself, you can ask a friend for help. Read your composition to him aloud. You can also ask him to read it aloud. You may hear a problem that you haven’t been able to see. Your friend can also help you find some mistakes.
Then, try to read your composition backward (倒着). Another way to catch spelling mistakes is to read backward, from right to left, starting with the last word in your composition.
Another method some writers usually use is to keep a list of the types of mistakes they commonly make, and then use the list each time they correct their works.
Tips for checking a composition
Giving it a rest When finishing your composition, you’d better not try to correct mistakes 16 . Reading it carefully after several hours will be more useful.
Looking for one type of problem at a time It’s a great idea to read your composition 17 by paying attention to sentence structures first, then word choice, then spelling, and finally punctuation.
Asking a friend for help You can find some mistakes by 18 your composition to your friend or listening to your friend read it.
Reading the composition backward Reading backward can help you find 19 mistakes.
Keeping a list of the types of mistakes It’s helpful to keep a list of common mistakes, and then use 20 when you correct your works.

Have you heard of visual(视觉)learners and auditory(听觉)learners Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily remember information for pictures, you’re likely(可能) a visual learner. Auditory learners best by hearing. If you seem to remember things by hearing them, then you are likely an auditory learner. Here are some learning tips for these two types of learners.
Tips for visual learners
For visual learners, this is very important! If your teacher uses a PowerPoint, watch the pictures carefully and find out what they might include and their hidden meanings.
Take notes by drawing mind maps and connecting ideas instead of just copying down a list. This way, your brain will easily connect the different concepts(概念). You can even draw pictures if you find that works better for you.
Mark your notes in different colors. This will help your brain in keeping all of the information separate(分离的). Different colors show different kinds of information or importance.
Tips for auditory learners
If you don’t listen carefully in class, then as auditory learner, you’re missing the easiest way to learn. If you find that taking notes prevents you from listening, ask a friend if you can borrow his or her notes or write down everything you remember right after the lesson.
Types of learner Tips
Visual learners They learn best by seeing ◎ Watch the pictures 21 and try to remember them completely. ◎ Draw 22 or pictures in your notebook. ◎ When taking notes, use different colors to 23 different kinds of information and key points.
Auditory learners They learn best by hearing. ◎ Listen carefully in class. ◎ 24 taking notes if it makes you have difficulty listening. ◎ Borrow your friend’s notes or 25 everything according to your memory right after lesson.

How to start a conversation when speaking English online When you speak to somebody online, start by asking “Yes or No” questions. Use questions such as “Do you like… ” or “Can you… ” or “Have you ever… ”
Remember your goal. You are trying to learn about the other person. Think about things you enjoy and share your own experiences to find that you have similar interests. If you only ask questions, you will sound like a policeman or a policewoman!
How to keep a conversation going Listen carefully. In that way, you can get to know somebody well. When you know him or her well, you will have more to talk about. Then ask follow-up questions. Last year, I didn’t like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke so quickly that I could hardly follow her most of the time. I was afraid to ask questions because of my poor pronunciation. I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything.
Then one day I watched an English movie named Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie! So I began to watch other English movies, too. Although I could not understand everything the characters said, their body language and the expressions on their faces helped me to get the meaning. I also realized I could get the meaning by listening for just the key words. Besides, I learned some useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake” or “It serves you right”, I didn’t understand these sentences at first. But because I wanted to understand the story, I looked them up in a dictionary.
Now I really enjoy my English class. I want to learn new words and more grammar so that I can have a much clearer understanding of English movies.

Usually, when we talk about reading, we think of using our eyes to see letters written in ink on paper. However, this is not always true. For example, blind people cannot see, but they can still read books.
The man who introduced blind people to reading was Louis Braille. Braille lost his eyesight at the age of three. When he was ten, he went to a school for the blind in Paris. In those days, books for blind people used paper pressed against metal wire to form letters. Since the metal wire was heavy, each book weighed as much as 100 pounds. Indeed, the school library only had fourteen such books in it.
In 1821, a soldier(士兵)visited the school and showed the students a system (系统)for passing messages at night. His system used paper with small, raised dots that could be felt with the fingers. Each letter of the alphabet was symbolized by a different pattern which consisted of twelve dots. The soldiers would pull their fingers over the raised dots to read the message.
While the students found the soldier’s idea interesting, the system was too difficult to be of practical use. However, young Louis Braille took the idea and worked on it. At the age of fifteen, he created a system with patterns of six raised dots symbolizing each letter. “Braille”, the system for reading used today by blind people around the world, was thus born.
The blind can easily recognize(辨别)Braille with their fingers. They can also easily write in Braille with a special typewriter. Today, it is the most common system used by blind people for reading and writing, and nearly every language, including Chinese, has its own version(版本)of Braille for its people to use.

Children are amazing! They ① pick up languages so naturally and easily. Have you ever wondered why It’s not because they have great natural language abilities. ② In fact, studies show that an adult’s potential(潜能) to learn languages is as good as a child’s.
So why do children still seem to acquire languages more quickly than the rest of us It’s because of the way they learn. Children learn by simply doing what comes naturally—they listen, copy and communicate. Let’s take a closer look at how children acquire languages. Perhaps we can discover a better, more “natural” way to learn English.
1. ________
When people talk to children, they often use simple words that children can understand. That’s really important to the children’s language development. In order to learn, children must be able to understand what they hear. If they don’t understand it, it’s just meaningless noise. Listen to radio or TV programs that use English at your level. If you can’t understand every word or sentence, don’t give up. Just pay attention to what you can understand, and listen as often as you can.
2. ________
Children like to copy their parents, their friends and even the TV. This teaches them how to pronounce the language. As you listen to English, repeat what you hear as much as you can.
3. ________
Children don’t practice grammar rules but use the language to talk about things that interest them. ③ This helps them learn to express themselves. They don’t worry about their small vocabulary or poor grammar. They find ways to say what they want and they do it successfully. So look for chances to talk with people in English.
Don’t worry about making mistakes. You can learn English better by correcting mistakes!

“The”, which exists (存在) everywhere of the English world. We can’t imagine English without it. But it’s not much to look at. It can’t be used to describe beautifully, research carefully or think deeply. And yet this simple and common word could be one of the most powerful words in the English language.
“The” tops the leading tables of most frequently (频繁地) used words in English, accounting for 5% of every 100 words used. “The” also lies at the heart of English grammar, having a function (作用) rather than a meaning.
“Although ‘the’ has no meaning in itself, it seems to be able to do things in unbelievable and tiny ways,” says Michael Rosen, a poet and writer. Consider the difference between “he scored a goal” and “he scored the goal”. The meaning of “the” expresses something important. Perhaps it was the only one of the matches Or maybe it was the key that won the competition The background caused the basic meaning of the context.
This simplest word can be used for dramatic (戏剧性的) effect. At the start of Hamlet, a guard’s lines of “Long live the King” is soon followed by the ghost, “Looks it not like the King ” Who, the audience doubts, does “the” refer to The living King or a dead King This kind of writing way is used to make people feel uneasy. “‘The’ is doing a lot of work here,” says Rosen.

As we know, different people have different pronunciations of the same word. Standard pronunciation is important for English speaking as well as for listening. In China, people from one area may not understand what people from another area are saying because of the different Chinese dialects(方言). Standard Chinese pronunciation can help people from different places understand each other easily.
It is the same as English. If your pronunciation is not standard, it is hard for other people to understand you.
If you want to improve your pronunciation, the following ways are helpful.
Get some good books with tapes. Do the exercises, from the simple to the difficult, step by step.
You can also watch English-language films and TV programs, listen to English-language radio.
Try to listen every day, even if only a few minutes. At first you may understand few words. Don’t give up. Just listen.
Remember to read and speak English every day. Spend an hour reading English every day, it will help you to listen better. Finally you will notice that you are making progress.
Talk to English-speaking foreigners as often as possible. Foreigners will speak slowly with you, use simple words, and use body language to help you understand them. Don’t be afraid to talk to them. They won’t mind if you have trouble because they may have more trouble making themselves understood.

How to Improve Your Reading Skills
When you are learning English, listening, speaking and writing are important. But reading can also be very helpful. When you read you not only learn some new words, but also learn how to use them in sentences which are good examples for writing. Here are some suggestions for reading.
Try to read something that you can understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary, it means you still have a long way to go to improve your English.
Try to make your vocabulary larger. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. But don’t write them while you are reading. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read. After you have finished reading, come back to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.
Read what you think is interesting. Choose a book or magazine about a theme that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. You can also read newspapers. There are always popular themes for you to choose.

Final exams are just around the corner. Liu Haoxuan, 14, who studies at Beijing Dayu School, is quite busy. However, he still had to find time to practise his spoken English. That’s because he had to take a new English listening and speaking test.
Liu is not alone. This is a new test for all students who are taking senior high school entrance exams (中考) in Beijing. Junior students have to take an English listening and speaking test that counts for 40 points on their full English exam. The test is taken on a computer. They can take the test twice – once in December and again in March – to try to get the highest score possible. The test was just introduced last year.
During the 30-minute test, students have to fill in blanks, answer questions and retell stories after listening to different materials. “It pushes us to speak. ________ it was hard at the beginning, it’s a good thing,” Liu said. He got a low score when he first took it last semester (学期). But he kept working hard in order to improve his pronunciation and other skills. He practiced speaking in front of a mirror every day. Later, he got a score of 39 on the test.
Liu Tianyou, 14, comes from Beijing Yuying Middle School. He has his own way to prepare for the spoken English test. He uses apps to take practice tests every day. “The apps will score your performance so that you can improve accordingly,” he said. “Also, the practice tests help me learn to take notes properly. They help me grasp topic sentences and connection words.”
