The Double Ninth Festival, also named the Chongyang Festival, falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. On this day, people would like to drink chrysanthemum (菊花) wine. The Chinese word for wine is Jiu, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word for “long”, which means “forever”. Another special food for this festival is chrysanthemum cakes. The Chinese word for cake is Gao, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word “high”, showing great progress at work and in daily life.
It is hard to say when these customs began. But there are many stories about the festival. As was recorded in a historical book of the sixth century, there lived a man named Huan Jing. He was learning the magic arts from Fei Changfang. One day, the two people were climbing a mountain. Fei Changfang suddenly stopped and looked very upset. He told Huan Jing, “On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, a disaster will come to your hometown. You must go home at once. Remember to make a red bag for each of your family members. Then you must all tie your bags to your arms, leave home quickly and climb to the top of a mountain. Most importantly, you must all drink some chrysanthemum wine. Only by doing so can your family members be safe.”
On hearing this, Huan Jing rushed home and asked his family to do as his teacher said. The whole family climbed a nearby mountain and did not return until the evening. When they got back home, they found all their animals dead, including chickens, sheep, dogs and even the ox.
Since then, climbing a mountain and drinking chrysanthemum wine became the traditional activities of the Double Ninth Festival.

Fighting Wildfires through Invention
At the age of 13, Prisha Shroff saw something that made her want to change the world. She was in the car with her family on the way home, when a big wildfire came in sight and forced them to turn back.
“I saw it in person,” she says. “The air pollution was so bad that we were told not to step outside of our car, or outside of our house.”
At the same time, Prisha remembered seeing other wildfires on the news. She thought, “This isn’t just a small problem, it’s a worldwide problem.” And she decided to look for a way to help.
The opportunity came when she attended her middle-school science fair. For her project, Prisha decided to design a system that could discover and put out wildfires. Using A.L and satellite imagery (卫星影像). it could know where wildfires would take place and also discover active fires.
In 2021, Prisha won the Lemelson Award for Invention, whose goal is to encourage young future scientists, engineers, and inventors to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. “That was the first big prize that I’d gotten,” she says. “It really gave me confidence to find ways to solve big problems, and that I have the ability to make a big difference.”
Now 16, Prisha is working hard on her design to help fire stations. It is a drone sent to an active fire to spread retardant (阻燃剂). “If they discover a wildfire, the drone can fly there, put it out, and come back.” Prisha says.
Prisha is crazy about creating solutions to not only mitigate (缓解) wildfires, but also the effects of climate change in general. “This is our planet, we should take care of it,” she says. Prisha now runs a special program at her school, and has spoken at the United Nations about the importance of learning certain knowledge and coming up with more inventions to help fight against climate change.
To future young inventors, Prisha says the key is to not simply hope something happens, but to actually try hard to make it happen, “You don’t need to change the whole world, but you can still change someone’s whole world,” she says.
6.If fire stations discover a wildfire, can fly there, put it out, and come back.

When you talk about, or even think about Iron Man, the first image that pops into your head is the red and gold suit worn by Tony Stark. It provides Stark strength, protection against most attacks (攻击) and the power off light. Iron Man is just a story, but the suit is not. Engineers call it an exoskeleton (外骨骼). It is the protective or supporting structure covering the outside of the body.
In fact, the exoskeletons were used in hospitals at first. They have changed the lives of many people with injuries (受伤) or illnesses that affect movement. Stacey Kozel, because of a disease, could not walk any more. But in 2016, she went hiking with an exoskeleton. In recent years, more and more exoskeletons have been used in factories. It is easy tor people to do the tiring or dangerous work with the exoskeletons. “Using the exoskeletons saves us much time and money.” One factory manager said. “Also, wearing the exoskeletons can reduce the risk of injury. What’s more exoskeletons car be used in rescue (救援) operations, providing workers with a lot of strength to lift heavy objects while protecting them from being hurt by falling weights.”
However, the global (全球) spread of exoskeletons remains difficult. For one thing today’s exoskeletons are expensive because they need to be charged (充电) regularly. For another, most exoskeletons can help people do only one type of movement. A company called Suit X is developing new forms of exoskeletons now. The company hopes people of all ages can use their products in the future.
That would be really cool, but some people worry that the technology will divide human. People who can afford exoskeletons will become stronger and achieve more than those without suits. We may end up with two classes (阶层) of human: the superhumans and everybody else. That wouldn’t be fair. Also, researchers have found that when people work in exoskeletons, muscles (肌肉) compete with each other, causing the brain to work less efficiently. Over time, it can also cause harm to the body.
So will exoskeletons harm or benefit humanity No one knows for sure. More research is needed.
11.Exoskeleton is the or structure covering the outside of the body.
12.What can exoskeletons do for people (写出两条用途)
13.What did Stacey Kozel do with an exoskeleton in 2016
14.Why are today’s exoskeletons expensive

Good morning, everyone! Welcome to our program Beautiful Life. Last week, some friends asked me how to change their lives by taking small steps. Here are my suggestions.
●Exercise
Want to feel better and have less stress in your life Just exercise. It not only provides you with a healthy body, but is also good for your brain.
●Be grateful
Never forget the good things you have. You have food in your stomach, a warm bed to sleep in, clean water, family, friends and so on. Be grateful for what you have had. It makes you feel lucky and then makes you lucky.
●Connect with people
Start with the closest people around you. Spend time listening to and communicating with them. Share your knowledge and your time with someone else. Say “hello” to strangers. This will make you more open and relaxed.
I think the successful people in this world love reading. Mark Cuban, an American businessman, used to read every book he could get his hands on. Even after he became very rich, he still read at least three hours every day.
●Live in the present
What has happened. What will happen. Shape your past and future by living your present to the fullest.

Li Yaoyou never thought his writing would become popular online. The 14-year-old in Wuhan wrote biography(传记) for each of his 57 classmates in classical Chinese. And now people are admiring his great talent.
Li’s biography has more than 8,000 words. He wrote about each of his classmates, including their birthdays and habits.
In fact, writing a biography was part of his Chinese homework for summer vacation. Students were asked to read Records of the Historian (《史记》). Then they had to write a biography for others.
At the beginning, Li just wrote about six classmates he knew well. His teacher then encouraged him to write more. It was a big project, but Li worked hard to complete it successfully. He didn’t know everyone well. So he talked with his classmates’ friends and observed(观察) them carefully. “Once, to write about a girl who I didn’t know well, I talked with her friends for a few days,” he said. “My hard work is helpful. I got to know she likes cartoons and food!”
Expressing his ideas in classical Chinese was not easy. Sometimes, he searched online to learn it and later his language skills improved. “When I wrote the last 10 pieces, the words came to my mind naturally,” he said. Also, he tried to say something more about each person’s special side.

Seventy percent of our planet is covered by one huge, continuous body of seawater-the ocean. In 2008, the United Nations recognized June 8 as World Oceans Day. It’s a day to think about the important role that the oceans play in our lives, the dangers that are facing our oceans and the action we can take to protect them.
The importance of our oceans
The ocean is home to a number of animals on Earth, Marine (海洋的) plants provide us with 70% of the oxygen (氧气) we breathe. The ocean controls our climate (气候), providing heat in winter and cool air in summer. It also provides us with food and medicine. No matter where you live on the planet, your life need depend on the ocean.
The problems facing our oceans
The most serious problem facing the ocean at the moment is plastic (塑料) pollution. Cutting the use of plastic bags and plastic bottles has been an important theme for World Oceans Day for a number of years. Climate change and rising sea temperatures are also huge problems. Rising sea temperatures have something to do with the weather pattern and the increase in extreme weather conditions.
How to celebrate the day
The day is celebrated in different ways, including special events at aquariums (水族馆) and zoos, beach and river clean-ups, school activities, art contests and film festivals. 这样的活动能使人们想起海洋的重要性。

Sweetest Day is always on the third Saturday in October in America. This holiday is much more important in some regions than in others. Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo are the biggest cities Sweetest Day cities. It is a holiday that is increasing its popularity (流行程度) every year throughout the country.
Sweetest Day is celebrated to make someone happy. It is a day that offers all of us an opportunity to care about not only the sick, aged and orphaned (孤儿), but also friends, relatives and family.
Over 60 years ago, a Cleveland man, believing that the city’s underprivileged groups (弱势群体) often felt they were forgotten and left out, had the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by giving out small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he gave out these small gifs on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration ceremony, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. Then the idea of spreading cheer to the underprivileged was spread to everyone. And soon the idea was spread to other cities all over the country.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group’s religious sentiment (感情) or on a family relationship. It reminds us that a thoughtful word or deed enriches life and gives it meaning.

Start by reading a few minutes every day. Read every day, even if it is just for 10 minutes. Read when you get up early or before you go to bed. If you can, read at the same time every day. This will make your brain regard it as “reading time”.

When I was 5 years old, I went to the USA with my mom. I can still remember the first Halloween holiday I had in the USA.
On the morning of Halloween, we paid a visit to a pumpkin farm. Each of us brought a pumpkin to school with us. I used the pumpkin to make a lantern which had two triangle eyes and a scary mouth.
In the afternoon, we put on the Halloween costurnes and went on parade in school. Some of the costurnes were nice, but some of them looked scary. I chose to wear a suit of Superman’s clothes.
I did a lot of things that day, but the part I liked best was “trick or treat” in the evening. After dinner, I went outside with an empty bag. I hoped to get a lot of candies from people. At first, I was a bit nervous, so when I knocked at the door, my heart was beating very fast. A lady came out, and I said carefully to her, “Trick or treat.” My voice was very low, and even myself could hardly hear it. To my surprise, the lady was so kind to give me two candy bars, and I was so excited, thanked the lady and moved on. I couldn’t remember how many houses I visited, but I could remember how many candies I got — I got 91 pieces of candy that day, and I was so proud of myself.
What a happy Halloween I had! And I wish we could have a Halloween every month!

Nowadays many new and useful inventions have come into use. If I were a scientist, I would have my own invention——a magic door, a door that can take me to every part of the world, just like Doraemon's magic door.
Since our life is getting busier and busier, my magic door is really needed. The population of the world is rising day by day,and the number of cars used is getting larger. Therefore, the traffic jam becomes a big problem to people in both poor and developed countries. Moreover,by using a large number of cars, people have to face another problem:the pollution of air. All those reasons lead to the need for such an invention as a magic door. It can take the place of the traditional ways of transportation.
Magic doors have many advantages. Firstly, you can go wherever you want in a minute. Just open the door and go through it,you can stand in another place. Two parts of the door are two parts of the world. Thus, magic doors can meet the need for discovering new places for people. Secondly, magic doors sometimes can even make people safe. Magic doors can be used in everyday life. If you dropped into a river accidentally, for example, people would go there immediately to help you get out of danger by using magic doors.

There have been many traditions and customs on the Chongyang Festival. People show respect for the seniors, (1) , (2) , (3) , insert Zhuyu and enjoy chrysanthemum.
There are many holidays and festivals. Dads have Father’s Day Mums have Mother’s Day But do our grandparents have a special festival Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for older people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect to their grandparents.
There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That’s because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.
In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called “seniors” instead of “old people”. They’d rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement (退休) they take up hobbies, part-time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.
Westerners respect their older people, too. Usually, seniors don’t have to buy tickets for trains and buses. They are given discounts (打折) in stores and restaurants.
But Western seniors don’t often live with their children—they live alone. For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents’home, and a great smile and a warm hug for their parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.

Halloween is a strange holiday. It started a few centuries ago in Europe. It began as “Hallow Evening”which means “holy night”. November 1st was called “ All Saints’ Day (万圣节)” and people honored all the saints who did not have their own special day. People believed that all the spirits of dead people were active on the night of October 31st. So people would play all kinds of tricks on each other.
Black is one of the traditional Halloween colors, probably because Halloween festivals and traditions took place at night. Pumpkins are a symbol of Halloween, so orange has become the other traditional Halloween color. Making lanterns of pumpkins is a Halloween custom.
