一、阅读理解
Today,
roller
skating
is
easy
and
fun.
But
a
long
time
ago,
it
wasn’t
easy
at
all.
Before
1750,
the
idea
of
skating
didn’t
exist.
That
changed
because
of
a
man
named
Joseph
Merlin.
Merlin’s
work
was
making
musical
instruments.
In
his
spare
time
he
liked
to
play
the
violin.
Joseph
Merlin
was
a
man
of
ideas
and
dreams.
People
called
him
a
dreamer.
One
day
Merlin
received
an
invitation
to
attend
a
fancy
dress
ball.
He
was
very
pleased
and
a
little
excited.
As
the
day
of
the
party
came
near,
Merlin
began
to
think
how
to
make
a
grand
entrance
at
the
party.
He
had
an
idea.
He
thought
he
would
get
a
lot
of
attention
if
he
could
skate
into
the
room.
Merlin
tried
different
ways
to
make
himself
roll.
Finally,
he
decided
to
put
two
wheels
under
each
shoe.
These
were
the
first
roller
skates.
Merlin
was
very
proud
of
his
invention
and
dreamed
of
arriving
at
the
party
on
wheels
while
playing
the
violin.
On
the
night
of
the
party
Merlin
rolled
into
the
room
playing
his
violin.
Everyone
was
greatly
surprised
to
see
him.
There
was
just
one
problem.
Merlin
had
no
way
to
stop
his
roller
skates.
He
rolled
on
and
on.
Suddenly,
he
ran
into
a
huge
mirror
that
was
hanging
on
the
wall.
Down
fell
the
mirror,
breaking
to
pieces.
Nobody
forgot
Merlin’s
grand
entrance
for
a
long
time!

In
order
to
know
a
foreign
language
entirely,four
things
are
necessary.
Firstly,
we
must
hear
it
spoken.
Secondly,
we
must
be
able
to
speak
it
ourselves
correctly
,
with
confidence
and
without
hesitation(犹豫).
Thirdly,
we
must
be
able
to
read
the
language
and
fourthly,
we
must
know
how
to
arrange(安排)
sentences
in
paragraphs,so
as
to
write
a
good
composition.
There
is
no
easy
way
to
succeed
in
language
learning.
A
good
memory
is
a
great
help,
but
it
is
not
enough
simply
to
learn
rules
by
heart
from
a
grammar
book.
It
is
no
much
use
learning
by
heart
long
lists
of
words
and
their
meanings.
We
must
learn
words
not
by
themselves,
but
in
sentences.
We
must
learn
by
using
the
language.
“Learn
through
use”
is
a
good
piece
of
advice
for
those
who
are
studying
a
new
language.
Practice
is
very
important.
We
must
practice
speaking
and
writing
the
language
whenever
we

Suppose
you
are
a
visitor
in
the
land
of
Mongolia,
some
friends
ask
you
to
eat
with
them.
What
kind
of
manners(礼貌)
do
they
want
you
to
have
They
want
you
to
give
a
loud
burp(饱嗝)
after
you
finish
eating.
Burping
would
show
that
you
like
your
food.
In
some
countries,
if
you
give
a
big
burp,
you
are
told
to
say
“Excuse
me,
please”.
In
many
places
people
like
to
eat
together.
But
in
some
parts
of
Polynesia
it
is
bad
manners
to
be
seen
eating
at
all.
People
show
their
good
manners
by
turning
their
backs
on
others
while
they
eat.
What
are
manners
like
in
an
East
African
town
The
people

not
to
see
you.
They
are
being
polite.
You
may
see
a
friend.
He

If

it
is
good
to
know

in
the
same
way.
People

to
show
that
they
want
to
be
friends.

I
went

a
very
difficult

 20
is
probably
true
with
many
people,
I
got
quite
homesick

after,
another
card

and
then
another,
 32
full
of
news
of
different
people.
I
began
to
 33
look
forward
to
the
next
one,

 34 to
see
what
this
author
would
come
up
with
 35

Finally,
the

 37

right
about

 38
about

They
had
been

the

and
still
bring
them
out
to
read
whenever
I
need
a

Happy
Leap
Day!
Leap
Day,
you
ask
Yes,
it’s
February
29.
You
may
notice
this
date
didn’t
appear
on
the
last
year’s
calendar,
or
the
year
before
that,
or…That’s
because
Leap
Day
happens
every
four
years
and
2014
is
a
leap
year.A
leap
year
has
366
days
instead
of
the
usual
365
days
that
an
ordinary
year
has.An
extra
day
is
added
to
the
calendar
in
a
leap
year,
and
here’s
why:
The
365
days
of
the
calendar
are
meant
to
match
up
with
the
solar
year.A
solar
year
is
the
time
it
takes
the
Earth
to
complete
its
orbit
around
the
Sun,
about
one
year.
But
the
Earth’s
yearly
trip
around
the
Sun
takes
a
bit
longer
than
365
days.
The
orbit
takes
365
days,
5
hours,
48
minutes
and
46
seconds,
to
be
exact.
That
time
equals
roughly
one
quarter
of
a
day,
so
the
calendar
and
the
solar
year
don’t
match
accurately.
After
a
few
years,
that
extra
time
in
the
solar
year
begins
to
accumulate.
After
four
years,
for
example,
the
four
extra
quarter
days
will
make
the
calendar
fall
behind
the
solar
year
by
about
a
day.
According
to
the
Honor
Society
of
Leap
Year
Day
Babies

a
club
for
people
born
on
Leap
Day

there
are
an
estimated
4
million
people
whose
birthdays
come
but
every
four
years.But
who
wants
to
wait
four
years
to
celebrate
his/her
birthday
Most
celebrate
yearly
on
February
28
or
March
1.
There
was
a
time
when
strict
rules
prevented
women
from
proposing
marriage
to
their
beloved.In
most
cultures,
that’s
not
the
case
anymore.In
fact,
female
pioneers
who
thought
this
rule
was
clearly
unfair
managed
to
get
Leap
Year
established
as
an
acceptable
time
for
women
to to
unmarried
men.So
on
February
29,
a
man
could
be
surprised
at
an
offer
he
couldn’t
refuse.The
first
documentation
of
this
day
of
ladies’
choice
was
in
1288
in
Scotland.Officials
then
decided
to
pass
a
law
that
allowed
women
to
propose
marriage
to
men
of
their
choice
in
that
year.They
also
made
it
a
law
that
any
man
who
said
no
to
a
proposal
in
a
leap
day
had
to
pay
a
fine.The
fine
could
range
from
a
kiss
to
payment
for
a
silk
dress
or
a
pair
of
gloves.

Dear
Tom,
I'm
very
glad
to
receive
your
letter.
And
it's
a
pleasure
to
tell
you
something
about
how
I
spent
the
National
Day
holiday.
First,
I
had
a
good
rest
because
recently
I
often
felt
tired
as
a
result
of
my
heavy
study
burden
as
well
as
lack
of
sleep
and
physical
exercise.
Of
course,
it
took
me
two
days
to
stay
with
my
grandparents
living
in
the
countryside
and
help
them
do
some
housework
and
tell
them
what
happened
to
me
and
my
friends.
What's
more,
I
had
a
trip
with
my
friends
to
appreciate
the
beauty
of
nature
and
breathe
fresh
air.
What
did
you
do
in
your
summer
holidays
I'm
looking
forward
to
hearing
from
you.
Best
wishes!
Yours,
Li
Ping
