Module 1 Wonders of the world
专题12 阅读理解
学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________
I spent three years teaching English at a middle school in Chongqing, China. While teaching in Chongqing, I had chances to travel all across Asia. My adventure (冒险) to the Gobi Desert was one of my favorites. My trip took me from the rainbow mountains of Zhangye Danxia, to Jiayuguan, an ancient fort (要塞) on the Great Wall of China. I ended at Dunhuang, one of the central parts of the Silk Road in the Gobi Desert.
I did the journey all by myself. A trip alone meant that I had to depend on my Mandarin speaking skills. ①When I first arrived in China my Mandarin was not good, but I tried to speak to local families and children on the trains. They were all very friendly. I had families practicing English with me as well. We all got our translation apps open when there was an unfamiliar word.
Mount Everest was my last major trip before leaving China. I traveled through the grand Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, to the blue Yamrok Lake, before making my way to the famous mountain with a tour group. It was amazing to put myself into Tibetan culture and experience the world through their eyes. ②I used my language skills to help our group order food in the markets and translate to English when our guide couldn’t find a proper word to express something.
Physically, the terrain (地形) was unique, and the high height and short of oxygen made me feel sick. As a result, I couldn’t sleep well at night. I remembered clearly waking up in the night to get my oxygen tank (氧气瓶) many times. However, I made it. After three days’ traveling, we finally saw sunset and sunrise at the top of Base Camp of Mount Everest.
The whole experience made me fall in love with traveling, and gave me the desire (欲望) to experience even more of the world.

If you expect to work in the future in the travel industry, you should begin learning Chinese.
That’s because Chinese people spent nearly $258 billion in total on international travel last year. That’s more than twice the combined amount spent on international travel by people from the United States and Germany, the next two biggest-spending nations. The Chinese are relative (相对的) newcomers when it comes to traveling beyond their nation’s borders and only a small percentage of them travel outside of China each year. Given the size of that nation’s population, even that small percentage represents well over 100 million Chinese travelers to foreign destinations.
Yet Chinese citizens flew, on average, just 65 miles last year versus the 227 miles flown on average by US residents (居民), the 285 miles flown on average by Germans, the 271 miles flown on average by those from the United Kingdom, and the 632 miles flown by the average Canadian last year.
China’s high total spending on international travel and its low average number of miles flown on international travel may show that while only a small percentage of China’s residents actually travel outside their homeland, those who do spend a lot of money don’t go that far. But there are reasons for China’s low average of miles travel on international trips. A small percentage of Chinese now have enough money to travel internationally, while the number of people who do travel outside of China is growing fast every year. Besides, a large percentage of Chinese people traveling abroad stay close to home.
However, as more and more Chinese gain the financial ability to travel internationally and as Chinese become more and more interested in visiting destinations farther and farther away from home, their spending on international travel and the average distances flown will both rise rapidly.
6.Why is it important to learn Chinese for the future work in travel industry
A.Because being good at Chinese is a must for future work.
B.Because Chinese is most commonly used in travel industry.
C.Because, travel industry requires employees to learn Chinese.
D.Because China will probably be a big-spending nation in international travel.
7.What can we infer from Paragraph 2

“Mom, are you ready ”
Dad had finally agreed that Mom and I could go on a one-week African safari! I had always wanted to visit Africa’s great outdoors.
It required a lot of training to get prepared for the safari. The training was boring, but I would suffer anything to go on a safari. And as the coach said, the training was very important.
At last, it was time to set out! The flight took 16 hours. I was bored to death, but deep down I still felt excited. When my mom, our guide, two other camping friends and I were driving to our campsite in an old jeep, I was thrilled to pieces. After taking many turns, we finally reached our destination (目的地). It was the day that I had been waiting for for the past three years!
We learned many interesting facts on our safari. For example, the giraffe has the most powerful kick of all the animals. The black mamba (树眼镜蛇) can move up to 11 kilometers an hour. I saw some lions trying to avoid the afternoon sun while lying under the shade of trees. I had read many books about wildlife. Aren’t lions, the “King of the Jungle”, very fierce (凶猛的) We stopped to take a few quick pictures of them. The lions didn’t seem to mind. When I saw how calm they looked, I wondered if all the books I had read had been telling the truth.
At night, we had steak, baked potatoes, green beans and many types of fresh fruit I had never even seen before. They were delicious!
When we returned home, I felt tired but proud. It was an amazing trip I will never forget!

There are many humanistic monuments (人文古迹) and natural scenic spots in textbooks. Children are always interested in them, and they want to go there in person. 17 This kind of tour allows parents and children to deepen their understanding of the scenes mentioned in the textbooks.
Many families have taken part in the textbook tour. 18 They can understand the cultural background and experience the historical period in the textbooks. It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced (浮出水面). I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”
“I do,” replied the Captain. “But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits (潜水服), he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We must go through it.
We were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colours of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper. Two hours later, we were a hundred metres under the water. The suits worked very well.
At one hundred metres deep, we could still see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small shrubs (灌木) grew under the large seaweed trees. Some of them had flowers.
We walked through this forest for about an hour, and then we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but I was very sleepy. We all slept, we walked further.

You must have heard of “city bu city” (meaning city or not city), an internet buzzword (流行语) created by a foreign blogger Baobaoxiong. It’s used to ask if a place feels like a big, fashionable city.
Millions of foreigners like Baobaoxiong are visiting China and posting their travel videos. The visa-free transit policy (过境免签政策) plays an important role in this fashion. Travelers from 54 countries can stay in China for up to six days without a visa as long as they have a travel document (文件) and a connecting ticket (联运机票) to leave.
The visa-free transit policy started in 2013. Back then, travelers are allowed to stay for 72 hours in seven different big cities in China. Now, travelers can stay for 144 hours in 41 places across 19 provinces. It has attracted more travelers to China. In the first three months of this year, 266 percent more foreigners came to China through visa-free policies compared with the same period last year, according to the National Immigration Administration of China (国家移民管理局).
▲ Through this policy, more and more people get to see the real China. “This is the whole reason why we decided to come to China: we wanted to see exactly what it’s like for ourselves,” said Irish YouTuber Luke in his online video. He thought Chengdu was unbelievably good, beautiful and modern, totally different from what he had heard about China from Western media.
Yuyuantantian, a new media account (账号) under China Media Group, looked at 100 China travel videos made by foreigners. It found foreigners used to visit famous spots like the Palace Museum and the Great Wall. But now they prefer experiencing everyday activities like shopping at markets, riding shared bikes and joining square dancing in parks. These activities give foreigners a closer look at everyday life in China, said Yuyuantantian.

During the recent National Day holiday, the Ailao Mountain scenic area (风景区) in Xinping County, Yunnan Province reportedly welcomed over 50,000 tourists. This was a 15 percent increase compared to the same time last year. For a time, hot topics such as “Traffic jam in the Ailao Mountains” caught public attention online.
A local hotel owner said that his 20 rooms were fully booked within hours. “Usually, our rooms cost about 90 yuan a night, but during the holiday, it went up to 240 yuan. Even so, there were still many more people wanting rooms,” he said.
