别里科夫的世界观就是害怕出乱子,害怕改变既有的一切,但是他所作所为,在客观上却起着为沙皇专制助纣为虐的作用。现实生活让他总是感到心神不安,让他害怕,为了同世人隔绝,不致受到外界的影响,他总想给自己包上一层外壳,给自己制造一个所谓安全的套子:哪怕在艳阳天出门他也总是穿着套鞋,带着雨伞,他的雨伞、怀表、削铅笔的小折刀等等一切能包裹起来的东西都总是装在套子里,就连他的脸也好像装在套子里,因为他总是把脸藏在竖起的衣领里面,戴着黑眼镜,耳朵里塞上棉花,坐出租马车的时候也要车夫马上把车篷支起来。这仅仅是他抵挡恐惧的外在表现。另一方面,一切被禁止的东西都让他感到心里踏实、清楚明了,而对一切没有被政府明令禁止的事物他都觉得可疑、害怕。

弗兰肯斯坦是个热衷于生命起源的生物学家,他怀着犯罪心理频繁出没于藏尸间,尝试用不同尸体的各个部分拼凑成一个巨大人体。当这个怪物终于获得生命睁开眼睛时,弗兰肯斯坦被他的狰狞面目吓得弃他而逃,他却紧追不舍地向弗兰肯斯坦索要女伴、温暖和友情。怪物学会了人类之间的爱与关怀,单他的行动并未得到人们的同情和接纳,相反,他得到的回报永远是冷漠、鄙视和遗弃,他感到深深的孤独。弗兰肯斯坦在经过努力后放弃了为怪物制造异性伴侣的实验,怪物因此与弗兰肯斯坦为敌。在他们的新婚床上杀死了他亲爱的新娘伊丽莎白。弗兰肯斯坦发誓要报仇,他一路追踪怪物到北极,直至死去了。而怪物最终自焚而死。
