What do you know about World Earth Day

Jaws is a classic(经典的) 1975 thriller(惊悚片) by Steven Spielberg. Set in a U.S. seaside town(海滨小镇), it tells of a huge man-eating(食人(的)) great white shark attacking beachgoers(去海滩的人). A police chief(警察局长), a marine biologist(海洋生物学家), and a shark hunter(捕鲨人) join forces(联手;合力) to stop it. Tense(紧张的) and exciting, it’s famous for its suspense(悬念) and iconic(标志性的) shark scenes.
Make predictions according to the title.
What does the title Sharks: Dangerous or Endangered mean
On one hand, it notes the common view of sharks as "dangerous".
On the other hand, it notes that many shark species are "endangered" due to overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change.

Skim the passage and choose the best answer.
What type of text is this passage
A. Narration (记叙文).
B. Argumentation (议论文).
C. Exposition (说明文).
D. Prose (散文).
Objective purpose: Focuses on explaining facts, concepts, or processes.
Clear structure: Uses logical frameworks like time order, cause-effect, or classification, with transition words for coherence.
Precise language: Employs formal, accurate terms; avoids exaggeration. May use technical terms explained via examples or definitions.
Skim the passage and match each paragraph with its main idea.
Para.1 A. Finning kills millions of sharks a year.
Para.2 B. The opening scene from the 1975 film Jaws.
Para.3 C. More people want to protect sharks from extinction.
Para.4 D. Benchley came across an awful sight of dead sharks
and fought to protect sharks.
Para.5 E. Jaws made people more scared of sharks and people
killed as many sharks as they could.
Read the passage and find out how sharks are described in the film Jaws.
Sharks are described in the films as dangerous and bad animals that eat humans.
Read the passage and answer the questions.
1. Why is the film Jaws mentioned at the beginning of the passage
To attract readers with the impressive scene.
To illustrate how Jaws reinforced the idea of sharks as dangerous.
To show how it made people see great white sharks as dangerous, starting the story of human - shark relations change.
It sets up the context for discussing humans’ impact on sharks (like overfishing) later.
Read the passage and answer the questions.
2. Why does the author say “People have always been scared of sharks, but Jaws made things worse.” in para.2 Try to give some details.
Many people who saw the film started to believe that sharks were bad animals that ate humans.
Some people stopped swimming in the sea, afraid of the horrible creature from the film.
Other people started fishing for sharks, killing as many as they could.
Read the passage and answer the questions.
3. According to para.3, besides fear, what other factor led to the rapid drop in the number of large sharks after 1975
Finning is a type of fishing where sharks are caught, their fins cut off, and then the sharks are thrown back into the sea to die slowly and painfully.
Finning. Sharks were caught for their fins to make shark fin soup, which killed millions of sharks yearly.
Read the passage and answer the questions.
4. According to para.4, what made Peter Benchley realize his earlier view of sharks was wrong
5. What can we infer from the fact that only around six people are killed by sharks every year in para.4
Sharks don’t target humans on purpose. Experts prove they attack humans by mistake, so the idea of sharks as dangerous killers hunting humans is inaccurate.
Witnessing the cruel reality of finning and the large number of dead sharks, he understood humans, not sharks, were the real danger.
Read the passage and answer the questions.
6. According to para.4, how did people’s attitude towards sharks differ before and after learning more about them
7. How does the author feel about the future of the sharks
Before, many feared sharks (influenced by Jaws);
After learning more, more people want to protect sharks from extinction.
Optimistic.
Fortunately = Luckily / It is fortunate / lucky that…
1 To criticise Peter Benchley’s misleading description of sharks in his book and advocate the protection of sharks.
2 To explain people’s misunderstanding of sharks and raise awareness of shark protection.
3 To inform people about sharks and recommend the film and the book to them.
Choose the author’s purpose in writing the passage.
Complete the chart showing how attitudes towards sharks have changed with words and expressions from the passage.
as dangerous animals
sharks were bad animals that ate humans
swimming in the sea
fish for sharks
fear of sharks and finning
was wrong about sharks’ behaviour
to protect

Think & share
1. How do you think Peter Benchley felt after diving in 1980
2. What other films or books do you know that feature wild animals Do they “paint” a good or bad picture of these animals Say how the animals are described.
Peter Benchley might feel sad for the sharks being killed; he might feel regretful for depicting the great white shark as a dangerous animal in his book; he might also feel angry about finning.
