Talking online is no replacement for face-to-face contact.
Images really cannot replace a real-life smile or municating through a screen makes it more difficult for children concentrate or show kindness to others.
The Internet can make people self centred.
Instead of having proper conversations with their friends, some people are only concerned with their online popularity. A lot of the content posted on social media is shallow or trivial.
Online relationships may not be what they appear to be.
Friendships are built on the basis of trust, and with online communication you can never be 100 percent sure that the people you are chatting to are being honest about who they are.
Read the second blog post "The Internet Helps plete the information on the right side of the diagram.

Whenever someone needs help, friends from all over the world can immediately
provide useful suggestions or information. This makes friends feel loved and cared for.

Group Work Choose one position. Each member of the group presents one argument to support your position based on the notes taken.
Suggestion:
Position: The Internet helps friendships.
Member 1:
The Internet facilitates convenient communication. Friends can stay connected via instant messaging or video calls regardless of distance. For example, friends studying abroad can still share daily moments through video calls, keeping their bond strong.
Member 2:
It broadens social circles. Online interest communities and forums allow people to meet like-minded friends globally. A reading enthusiast, for instance, can join an online book club and connect with fellow book lovers worldwide.
Group Work Think and share.
1. Look at the sentence from paragraph 2 in the first blog post, "It is these skills that enable us to develop lifelong friendships". What does "these" refer to Do you agree with the statement Why or why not
"These" refers to important social skills developed through direct contact with other people, such as the ability to concentrate and show kindness to others.
Yes, I agree. Because direct face-to-face communication allows for the exchange of non-verbal cues like body language and facial expressions, which are crucial for developing empathy, understanding, and deep connections with others. These skills are fundamental for building and maintaining long-lasting friendships.
Group Work Think and share.
2. In the second blog post, what does Eileen Kennedy-Moore mean when she says that online friends "fill holes real-life friends can't" Give your reasons.
Eileen Kennedy-Moore means that online friends can fulfill certain needs or provide certain types of support that real-life friends may not be able to. For example, online friends can offer a different perspective, share specialized knowledge or interests, or be available for communication at times when real-life friends are busy.
In the text, it is mentioned that online communication can bring people closer together and that online friends can provide useful suggestions or information immediately when someone needs help. This shows that online friends can offer support and companionship in ways that may complement or differ from the support provided by real-life friends. For instance, an online friend who shares a specific hobby can engage in in-depth discussions and activities related to that hobby, which might not be possible with real-life friends who have different interests.
Are there any other advantages or disadvantages of online friendships If so, list them below.
Advantages Disadvantages
Diverse perspectives Lack of physical presence
Shared interests Uncertainty of identity

Group Work Debate. Does the Internet help or harm friendships Express your opinion by using examples or personal experiences.
I think the Internet helps friendships. For example, my best friend moved to another city last year. We keep in touch through video calls on the Internet every week. We can share our daily lives, talk about our joys and sorrows just like when we were together. The Internet makes the distance between us shorter and our friendship is still as strong as before.
I think the Internet harms friendships. I had a friend who was very close to me. But after he got obsessed with online games. We no longer hang out together.
