Learning Objectives
PART. 01
Understand the daily study and life of British middle school students by watching videos. Based on your own daily study and life, compare the study and life in Chinese and British schools, and find out the similarities and differences between the two. Talk about your first impression of high school life, and have a preliminary perception of the study and life in the senior high school stage.
Learning Objectives
Analyze diverse texts to extract details about comedy. Watch a video to gather information on sports-related humour, practice extracting key ideas, and use this to role-play and discuss funny parts. Discuss humour styles , role-play dialogues, and debate cultural humour differences.
Explore cultural significance of comedy — e.g., Chaplin’s role in film history, British humour’s reflection of cultural values. Understand how comedy preserves and expresses cultural identities across time and regions.
Break down comedy into components, analyzing how Chaplin’s career or British humour reflects societal values. Use evidence to explain humour’s cultural and psychological impacts. In group work, design jokes, role-play humorous scenarios, and compare humour styles (Chinese vs. British).
Use “humour device identification” to refine understanding and “collaborative discussion” to deepen ideas. By independently researching humour examples, completing writing tasks, and reflecting on cultural humour differences, students take ownership of learning.

Group Work Do you find this video funny Do you think the man is humorous Talk about the funny parts of this video.
Suggested answer
I think the video is funny and the man is humorous. This funny part of this video is the unexpected choice of Mr Hill. The humorous effect is created by the contrast between the man’s less vigorous physical condition revealed in his conversation, and his choice for the sport that demands more energy. The man at the tourist information office doesn’t expect Mr Hill to enjoy extreme sports. The audience was led towards an easier sport before the ending, too.

Understatement 轻描淡写
Work in groups. Find an example of British humour from the Internet or books. What makes it funny
Pair Work What are the characteristics of Chinese humour Are there any similarities and differences between Chinese humour and British humour Discuss with your partner.
Chinese humour is based on puns and the British use irony, sarcasm, banter, understatement, self-deprecation, teasing or mockery.
British and Chinese humour uses irony and sarcasm, however, for different purposes. In China, the speaker and the listener are aware that the speaker is making fun of something and the speaker is trying to make the listener happy. Humour is usually used as a form of positive communication. The British can sound mean when they sense that the listener is not aware of the situation.
Another similarity is the use of irony, however, the British use more irony in their everyday language. The target of British irony and sarcasm is usually themselves.
Chinese humour avoids joking about someone’s personal life as it’s taboo. British humour has no limits.

Read the second funny story. Write a punchline that is both funny and logical.
A funny thing happened as we were driving to school yesterday. We stopped at a red traffic light and were waiting for it to change to green when a very small car drove up in the lane next to us. The driver put his foot on the brake to stop but as he did so the car started to roll. It rolled over very gently and very slowly right onto its side. The man in the car sat there looking mighty surprised. Fortunately there were some people waiting to cross at the traffic light, so they quickly ran over to the car and checked that the driver was fine, and then pushed the car back onto its wheels. _____________________________________________
____________________________________________________. We were still stopped at the traffic light when it changed back to red again-our mouths wide open in amazement!
