I was fourteen, sitting in the doctor’s office with my eyes closed. My heart was beating fast as I was waiting to get the result. I had nearsightedness. “Quite common and nothing to worry about,” said the doctor. But as my sight got worse, I couldn’t help but wonder what my life would be like from that moment on, especially at school.
For a girl who was bullied (欺辱) by older, more popular girls since Grade 1,I was afraid of any kind of change and the fact that I had to wear glasses was making me shake.
Even though the outside place was bad, being at home was a whole different story. I was in my own world where learning and imagination ruled. My glasses reminded me of everything I was curious, peaceful, and thirsty for knowledge a kid who had big plans for the future.
But then the morning would come and I would fear to go to school. There were countless times when I would forget my glasses on purpose because I was afraid that I’d be an easy target. Sometimes I’d hide them in my schoolbag, until one day when the doctor ordered me to wear them all the time.
But living in fear and hiding from the world wasn’t the answer. I knew I had to face my worries so I decided to make a change. I stopped wearing my hair down, and instead of wearing a hat, I started wearing ponytails (马尾辫). I put on my glasses and no longer cared about what others thought of me. And when I realized that the fear I was unwilling to face was just in my head, I was ready to embrace (欣然接受) the reality and move forward. My love of learning and being in school was much stronger than the fear I felt.
Today I’m confident to wear my glasses in front of others. Still, even though people view me differently when I wear glasses today. I don’t mind it. I don’t need to look smarter. I know who I am. This gives me confidence and courage when I don’t feel that I have what it takes to continue.

Airports are becoming more accessible for disabled people with wheelchair service. Now, one airline is going the extra mile to make airplanes more accessible too.
Delta recently showed a new seat prototype (雏形) at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany, which will allow passengers that are wheelchair users to stay in their own chairs during the flight. The design, shown by Delta Flight Products (DFP), will allow for in-flight comfort and make it easier for the wheelchair users to get on the plane.
“This design offers new possibilities for customers with disabilities to enjoy a travel experience they truly should have,” DFP president Rick Salanitri said.
The new design includes a seat that can change between the wheelchair mode and a traditional airplane seat. The built-in seat folds (折叠) up so that a wheelchair can be safely fixed in place. The passengers seated in the chair’s wheelchair mode are able to use the tray table that is designed to rise up to the suitable height when the seat is changed. The seats would be fixed into the present plane seat track systems, so no structural changes would have to be made to airplanes.
Having wheelchairs onboard will also solve the issue of wheelchairs getting lost or broken by airlines. According to the 2023 Air Travel Consumer Report, more than 11,000 wheelchairs and scooters (踏板车), 1.5%of the total, were mishandled by US airlines.
DFP has already started discussions with the US Federal Aviation Administration and the UK Civil Aviation Authority with the goal of getting this seat on every airplane ; not just the Delta ones.
While airplanes are still not going to be completely accessible — the restrooms are too small to use a wheelchair in — solutions may be just around the corner. The new accessible airplane seat could be just the beginning of the age of inclusive (包含一切的) travel.
8. What might be DFP’s purpose of developing the new seat
A. To attract more passengers to the airline.
B. To make airplane seats more comfortable.
C. To give passengers safer travel experience.
D. To improve wheelchair users’ flight experience.
9. What does the fourth paragraph mainly focus on
A. The expectations for the new seat.
B. How the new seat works.
C. The functions of the new seat.
D. Which airlines offer the new seat.
10. What does the underlined word “mishandled” mean in paragraph 5
A. Managed badly.
B. Examined carelessly.
C. Used too much.
D. Paid no attention to.
11. What does the author think of the new seat
A. It is well received.
B. It will drive more changes.
C. It needs to be tested further.
D. It contributes much to airlines.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. B

At your next meeting, wait for a pause (暂停)in conversation and try to measure how long it lasts.
Among English speakers, chances are that it will be a second or two at most. But while this pattern may be universal, our awareness of silence differs dramatically across cultures.
What one culture considers a confusing or awkward pause may be seen by others as a valuable moment of reflection and sign of respect for what the last speaker has said. Research in Dutch and also in English found that when a silence in conversation stretches to four seconds, people start to feel uneasy. In contrast, a separate study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds — nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.
In Japan, it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t speak at all. It’s already a failure to understand each other by speaking because you’re repairing that failure by using words.
In the US, it may originate from the history of colonial (殖民地) America as a crossroads of many different races. When you have a complex of difference, it’s hard to establish common understanding unless you talk and there’s understandably a kind of anxiety unless people are verbally(口头上) engaged to establish a common life. This applies also to some extent to London.
In contrast, when there’s more homogeneity, perhaps it’s easier for some kinds of silence to appear. For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well familiar with.
12. Which of the following people might have the longest silence in conversation
A. The Dutch. B. Americans.
C. The English. D. The Japanese.
13. What might the Japanese agree with in a conversation
A. Speaking more gives the upper hand.
B. Speak out what you have in your mind.
C. Great minds think alike without words.
D. The shorter talking silence, the better.
14. What can we learn from the text
A. A four second silence in conversation is universal.
B. It’s hard for Japanese to reach a common agreement.
C. English speakers are more talkative than Japanese speakers.
D. The closer we and our family are, the easier the silence appears.
15. What does the underlined word “homogeneity” in the last paragraph mean
A. Similarity. B. Competition.
C Balance. D. Misunderstanding.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. A

“Wow, these trees are so tall!” William shouted excitedly, while walking with his classmates in a forest near his school. They were on a field trip to the forest as part of a science lesson.
Over there, they met the forester (护林人), Victor. When William learned Victor lived in a simple wooden house there for years, he laughed at him with his friends.
Then, they passed by an entrance to a cave. William wanted to explore inside the cave, but his teacher didn’t allow it. “I’ll come back here,” he thought. On the way back to school, he remembered the exact location of the cave.
The next day, William asked his four friends to the cave together. They told their parents they would go to the library and return home in the evening. None of the teenagers told their parents about their plan to visit the cave.
When the teenagers reached the cave, they left their school bags outside to reduce the burden. One by one, they entered the cave. Just when they took a few steps inside, some rocks from the cave wall fell and blocked the entrance.
“How are we going to get out now ” one of the teenagers Sarah shouted. William had an idea and said, “Maybe we can try digging through the fallen rocks with our hands to reach the entrance.” But realizing getting out of the cave only by their hands was impossible, they had great fear. The sun was about to go down. The teenagers started calling for help, but nobody could hear them. The teenagers were losing hope.
Victor happened to pass by the entrance to the cave, and five school bags caught his attention. He also heard some sounds coming from inside the cave. “Who’s in there ” Victor shouted.
“I’m William! We came here yesterday with our teacher!” William replied instantly.
“Help us, please! We are stuck! Sarah can’t breathe here because of fear.”

【答案】
Victor immediately called the first-aid center and rushed home. After a little while, Victor got back to the entrance with a shovel and a flashlight. “Hey! I’m back!” he shouted, assuring the kids that he would rescue them. Then, he began digging through the rocks at the entrance. It wasn’t easy for one man to dig through the rocks, but he was trying his best. Meanwhile, William and his friends tried to stay calm and told Sarah not to worry. A few minutes later, William and his friends could see the flashlight shine through the cave’s entrance, which made them excited.
Soon, the teenagers walked outside the cave and took a deep breath in the fresh air. Fortunately, Sarah felt better. Just then, medical workers arrived and examined the children carefully to make sure they were OK. William looked at Victor who was worn out and regretted making fun of him when they first met. He apologized to the great forester and thanked him for rescuing him and his friends. Later, the teenagers’ parents arrived and were grateful to Victor for his timely rescue. Also, the teenagers promised their parents they wouldn’t lie and take such a dangerous adventure again.白塔中学高2024级高一(下)第三次月考英语试卷

A. It is well received.
B. It will drive more changes.
C. It needs to be tested further.
D. It contributes much to airlines.
