Horses can not only synchronize (同步) their heartbeats to sense danger more effectively, but they can also synchronize with people, which can, in turn, help the human calm down. The Fox Moon Farm Project has been doing this equine therapy (马疗法) work with youths for years. After a career in the corporate world, Cindy Freishtat said she and her co-founder, Maria Flint, were both ready for a new chapter in their lives. “We reached a place where we wanted to be of service,” Freishtat said. “We wanted to give back.”
Freishtat, whose father suffered from Alzheimer’s (阿尔茨海默症), wanted to see equine therapy’s results for people dealing with the disease. The Lakewood retirement Community in western Henrico County was a perfect match. Executive Director Heather Crumbaugh said she had been looking for an equine therapy organization willing to work with Alzheimer’s patients but that no other local place had felt equipped for it. Crumbaugh said, “The Fox Moon Farm was willing to take this step with us.”
Interested in contributing to the worldwide development of Alzheimer’s treatment, the team at the Fox Moon brought psychology professor Maureen Matthews of Virginia Commonwealth University into the fold to conduct a scientific study on the program’s effects. Even in its early stages, the immediate results were significant.
The participants were Lakewood residents with advanced Alzheimer’s. Several could no longer speak, and all needed repeated introductions to their surroundings at first. Within a few sessions, residents were able to remember the farm and the horses when they arrived. “I saw a lady who wasn’t willing to speak leading the horse, and she came over next to me and started talking, pointing out things like birds and flowers,” Crumbaugh said.
Though the program took a break over the winter months, the study will resume this month. “I have no doubt in my mind that we are going to prove and show the effectiveness of working with horses in treating Alzheimer’s,” Freishtat said. “I want to help as many people with Alzheimer’s as I possibly can.”
4. Why did Cindy Freishtat and Maria Flint try the equine therapy on people with Alzheimer’s
A. They wanted to be helpful.
B. They needed to change their careers.
C. They used to benefit from it.
D. They were required by a professor.
5. How did Crumbaugh probably feel about The Fox Moon Farm Project
A. Regretful. B. Threatened.
C. Grateful. D. Annoyed.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The difficulty of choosing participants.
B. The steps of the equine therapy.
C. The simplicity of researchers’ work.
D. The effects of the program.
7. What does the underlined word “resume” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Suspend. B. Continue.
C. Quit. D. Start.

It might appear that an eighteen- week old baby isn’t doing much more than looking cute and smiling, but actually, those as young as four months are already linking the sounds they hear and the way the mouth needs to move to produce these sounds, according to a new study published in Developmental Science.
Eylem Altuntas, the study’s leader, and his team taught a group of infants (婴儿), between four and six months old, a series of nonsense words, such as “bivawo” or “dizalo”, which contained lip and tongue-tip sounds. They paired these words with cartoon images showing jellyfish and crabs.
Next, the babies were shown videos of people mouthing (without sound) these same nonsense words. In some videos, the face matched the cartoon image that they had been shown with that sound previously and in other videos it didn’t. Researchers measured how long babies spent looking at the videos. The results illustrated babies looked much longer at the videos where the face matched what they’d been shown previously. This demonstrated the babies’ minds were already making connections between the movements of mouths and the sounds they heard.
The findings surprised researchers. While it was previously believed that babies went through a complex learning process between six and twelve months old, babies began learning patterns at four months instead. This new study reveals your baby is listening to what you are saying and how you are saying it before he/she can respond back to you.
The research may be capable of assisting children who face speech difficulties and may make a big difference by helping them earlier on. The findings also provide opportunities for further research on what types of mouth movements young infants can tell apart. It also raises questions about how babies from bilingual (双语的) homes learn language.
Altuntas recommends having conversations with 4—7-month-old babies. “Talk to your baby slowly, clearly pronouncing each word, and then stop, waiting for the baby to answer. Teach your little one words by labeling objects around you. Infants are already connecting all the puzzle pieces, and by speaking and interacting with them frequently, parents can help them put it all together,” Altuntas said.
8. Why did the researchers measure babies’ viewing time in the videos
A. To determine the sound recognition. B. To assess their ability to concentrate.
C. To test how long they can remember things. D. To see if they can link what they see and hear.
9. What was the previous common belief about babies according to the text
A. They began learning patterns from 6 to 12 months.
B. Their study process was the same as the adults’.
C. They easily confused sounds with tones.
D. Their learning ability was more complex.
10. What does the research imply
A. Bilingual families should emphasize movements of speech.
B. Early intervention could help children with speech issues.
C. Cartoons are more effective for language learning.
D. Formal language classes are necessary for babies.
11. What does Altunta suggest parents do for their 4—7-month-olds
A. Play loud music. B. Avoid using cartoons.
C Speak in a slow tone. D. teach more languages.
D
You might have heard that penguins(企鹅)marry for life. The tiny birds, found in Australia and New Zealand, leave their partners if they’re not content with how many chickens they’re producing. Now, researchers have found that the number of break-ups affects the species’ reproductive success more than other factors.
Little blue penguins are the world’s smallest species of penguins, growing to an average of just 12 inches high. Phillip Island, southwest of Melbourne, is home to around 30,000 of these tiny birds. “It has the world’s most little penguins,” says Richard Reina, a biologist at Monash University and coauthor of the new study published in Ecology and Evolution.
After a day of looking for food at sea, the tiny birds return to their place on the hillside. Some of them live in special nesting boxes and are micro-chipped(微芯片), so scientists can easily gather information. During the breeding(繁殖)season—September to February— researchers record which birds are paired in nesting boxes or “married”, when they lay eggs and when the eggs hatch as well as the chickens’ growth and survival rates. They also note if any pairs separate or break up.
Reina and his coworkers examined penguin break up rates over 13 breeding seasons. On average, around one in four pairs found new partners each year but the break up rate in one year could be as low as one in twenty or as high as one in three. “This high variability of break-up rates was fairly surprising,” says Reina. Years with a higher break-up rate were strongly correlated with lower breeding success. The break-up rate was also more reliable for predicting future breeding success than environmental or behavioral factors, like sea surface temperature or habits for seeking food.
Understanding the factors that influence breeding is essential for assessing penguins’ long- term survival and taking some protective measures. Experts could potentially predict how successful upcoming breeding seasons will be based on penguin break- up rates. This is particularly important as human activities continue to impact the ocean.
12. What does the new study focus on
A. The family structure of penguins.
B. Impacts of penguin break-ups.
C. The reason for penguin marriage.
D. Changes in penguin break-up rates.
13. What is the scientists’ purpose of attaching microchips to the penguins
A. To track food. B. To protect the eggs.
C. To collect data. D. To record the climate.
14. What did Reina think of the break-up rates of penguins
A. It was inspiring. B. It was frightening.
C. It was understandable. D. It was unexpected.
15. Why is the study important for conservation efforts
A. It helps predict penguins’ breeding success rate.
B. It measures the effect of human activities.
C. It leads to finding the best nesting boxes.
D. It shows penguins’ good adaptation.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In today’s world where artificial intelligence (AI) can copy our words, automate our decisions and even simulate emotions, understanding what sets us apart isn’t just philosophical. ____16____ Knowing what makes us unquestionably different from intelligent machines helps us protect and even expand our most valuable strengths— our creativity, emotional intelligence, life experiences and sense of purpose, so that we don’t just coexist with AI, but rise above it, shaping the future instead of being shaped by it. Here are three irreplaceable human attributes (属性).
We have real-life experiences while AI has data. Experience is one of the most powerful things that shape us from the moment on which we’re born. ____17____ While AI, on the other hand, can analyze massive data, it doesn’t learn from pain, joy, failure, or success the way humans do. Experience isn’t just about information— it’s about personal growth.
____18____ We create stories to make sense of the world, find purpose in struggle and connect our past to our future. However, AI doesn’t wonder about “the why” behind what it does. Instead, it just processes requests and generates responses, without caring about the outcome beyond the goals that it’s pre-programmed to achieve.
We have free will while AI has codes (代码). Humans can choose generosity over self- interest, forgiveness over hatred, and innovation over conformity. But AI only follows rules. No matter how advanced, it’s always bound by its programming. ____19____
AI may be extraordinarily useful and helpful, but it will likely never provide what makes us human—empathy (共情), true love, meaningful purpose and life experiences. ____20____ In this way, we can ensure that technology will serve humanity—not the other way around.
A. It’s gaining popularity.
B. Besides, it is deeply practical.
C. We are considerate while AI is creative.
D. We seek meaning while AI follows instructions.
E. It doesn’t have desires, beliefs or independent thoughts.
F. Every failure, success and challenge can influence our future decisions.
G. So value our and others’ emotional depth, life experiences and creative potential.

Today, I’m a 58-year-old certified (有证书的) fitness instructor, but actually, exercise wasn’t my idea of fun in the past.
Seven years ago, I was dealing with some stuff in my personal life, and I needed an outlet for my frustration (沮丧). I heard exercise could improve my mood, so I made phone calls to some local gyms. The owner, Adria, of one gym, was very personal as I could tell she’d be good at motivating me. It turned out that we became good friends.
I hoped being my friend meant she’d allow me not to attend a class if I just didn’t feel like it. On days when I said I couldn’t attend and gave one excuse after another, she pointed out the other time options that were available on the schedule. She wouldn’t let me out of the commitment I made no matter how many times I tried. Soon I was seeing changes in my body, emotions and attitude. I began to look forward to going to the gym.
One day, Adria mentioned she was tired and needed a day off. I sympathized with her but was shocked when the next thing out of her mouth was, “I wish you could get certified because you’re the only one I’d trust with the keys.” I laughed it off, knowing that was impossible. Me A trainer
For days following our conversation, every time the thought popped into my head, I heard the words — “No way” But for some reason, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So I decided to do some research to understand what it would take to be a Group Fitness instructor. I learned it’d take 3-6 months of reading texts, analyzing charts and watching videos, as well as online activities.
I finally signed up for the American Council on Exercise course. It was hard that I had to learn about certain muscles and workouts and memorize the decibel (分贝) level for the music used for each type of class. There were many times when I wanted to give up. But I chose to make a commitment to myself and follow through.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】
The test day finally came and it was no joke. My hands were sweating as I walked into the examination room. The written part was hard——things about muscles and workouts, and even safety instructions I’d memorized late into the night. But the practical exam was worse: demonstrating exercises flawlessly while explaining their benefits to a panel of evaluators. My voice shook at first, but then I remembered Adria’s faith in me. Her words — “You’re the only one I’d trust...”, echoed in my ears. Somewhere, I learned that I passed the test.
I went to Adria to share the good news. When I told Adria that I had passed the test, her face lit up with a huge smile. She hugged me tightly and said she knew I could make it. I couldn’t thank her enough at that moment. From then on, I started my new journey as a fitness instructor. Becoming a certified fitness instructor wasn’t just about a career change for me; it was about proving to myself that I could do anything I set my mind to, regardless of my age.
