When 100-year-old Colin Thorne crossed the 5.5k m finish line at the 2024 Rotorua Marathon, he deserved the acclaim of supporters cheering him on. “My main goal of entering races is not so much for myself, but to encourage people to get off their backsides and go for a run or a walk,” explains the spirited centenarian (百岁老人).
Over the past 12 months, Colin has become somewhat of a New Zealand icon (偶像). He gained recognition after he decided to celebrate his 100th birthday by starting a “grand tour” of Parkruns around New Zealand, as well as completing the race for the 60th anniversary (周年纪念日) of the Rotorua Marathon. “I’ve had an extremely good response,” he says. “People want to take photos and ask questions. Someone asked me, ‘Do I have my own teeth !’ I get a lot of fun out of entering the events.”
Colin was born in 1924 and raised through the Depression. He believes the physicality of working on farms for many decades formed the foundation of his longevity and fitness. After more than 30 years playing and coaching hockey until in his sixties, Colin decided to try running instead. “I guess it became a bit of an addiction,” he reflects.
Despite describing himself as a person who works slowly after running his first marathon in Whangarei at 65, Colin went on to finish a further 49 more. He held an impressive personal best time of three hours and 18 minutes for the New Plymouth 42.2 km Marathon—and ran his 50th and last marathon at 90 years old. Exercising six times a week, with three walks of up to 5 km around Whangarei, plus three sessions at his local gym, Colin is a phenomenon. He still lives independently, drives, cuts the grass in his garden and takes very little medicine.
Colin has no plans to slow down, with his future ambition to finish 200-plus Parkruns. He exclaims, “It has been an amazing journey and I’d like to do it all over again!”

A new study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health finds air pollution may negatively impact standardized test scores. Using data from the North Carolina Education Research Data Center, the researchers tracked 2.8 million public school students in North Carolina from 2001 to 2018 and measured their exposure to PM 2.5 found in polluted air. While previous research has shown negative effects on academic performance, it has relied on relatively small or less representative samples. “The biggest strength of this study is that we tracked every student in North Carolina in those years. For the whole time period that they were in the public schools,” said Emma Zang, coauthor of the study.
The study also finds that test scores of ethnic minorities and girls are disproportionately (不成比例地) impacted by PM 2.5 levels. “Females and ethnic minorities face sexism and racism,” said Zang. “If there were policies friendly to them currently, they would have the resources to lessen the negative influences.” More privileged populations, however, might have more resources that allow them to live in a better environment, such as in houses with air purifiers.
“The level of PM 2.5 pollution in the US is relatively low, but students living in areas below the current air quality standard of annual PM2.5cm concentration are still negatively impacted by air pollution when it comes to their test scores,” said Zang. “We should aim to strengthen the annual PM2.5 standard to better protect our children.”
Air pollution is known to contribute to disease and death, and it also negatively affects students’ academic performance even at low levels of pollution. The subsequent studies, the researchers said, would involve looking at whether the findings hold true in different areas, and also the reasons behind the ethnic and sexual differences.
28. What’s the greatest advantage of the study
A. Tracking each student for 18 years.
B. Collecting more comprehensive data.
C. Measuring students’ PM 2.5 exposure precisely.
D. Building links between air pollution and test scores.
29. According to Zang, ethnic minorities and girls _______.
A. have policies friendly to them currency
B. benefit from current policies on PM2.5 pollution
C. lack resources to reduce the impact of air pollution
D. have the lowest test scores due to their special identities
30. What’s Zang doing in paragraph 3
A. Giving a prediction. B. Raising a doubt.
C. Making a comparison. D. Offering a suggestion.
31. What might be the focus of the follow-up studies
A. Applicability of the findings to other regions.
B. Ways to address racial and sexual differences.
C. Long-term impacts of air pollution on children.
D. Establishment of PM 2.5 standard fit for children.
D
“WOW, THIS is not what I was expecting at all,” says Allison, a nurse, remembering the first romance novel she ever read. Having shared the general literary bias (偏见) towards romance novels, she is now crazy about this genre (体裁). Allison was browsing in The Ripped Bodice, a romance-novel shop that recently opened in Brooklyn. The day the shop opened, the queue to get in was more than an hour long. The shop, which is uniquely-decorated, is serious in its devotion to romance novels.
The popularity of The Ripped Bodice (the second chain store devoted to romance in the district) is part of a larger shift. During the pandemic, when many were stuck at home and looking for escapist reading, fictional romance blossomed. In the year to May, romance print sales were up by 52%, according to a market-research firm. List-price sales grew by 74%. Annual growth in sales went from 6% in 2020 to more than 50% last year.
Readers have changed too. Newer fans are mostly young adults and many are teenagers. They are keen on romance novels with a central love story and a happy ending.
“The industry has a lot of respect for what has been happening with romance,” says Kristen, the manager of the market-research firm. “Now modern authors want to seek something deeper. Love is a powerful feeling. I wish that the writers could all see their way past thinking that those emotions are somehow less valuable than emotions that are built out of pain and sorrow,” says Sarah, author of “Knockout”—a best-seller about romance in this season.
Librarians have noticed the shift too. Stephanie Anderson, of BookOps, which buys books for public libraries in New York and Brooklyn, notes that “the biggest challenge with romance at this point is finding the money and space to keep up with all the popular titles.”
32. What happened on the day when the Ripped Bodice opened
A. Some well-known writers appeared on the spot.
B. Readers gathered there out of passion for romance novels.
C. Readers showed little interest in this newly-opened book shop.
D. Allison’s bias towards romance novels has deepened.
33. Which of the following may contribute to the popularity of fictional romance
A. Shifts of writing styles. B. The marketing strategy.
C. The immobility during pandemic. D. People’s attempt to escape reading.
34. What can we learn from Sarah’s words in paragraph 4
A. Romance writers should dig into emotions built out of pain and sorrow.
B. Romance authors should pay more attention to people’s thoughts in the past.
C. Romance writers should get rid of the conventional plots completely.
D. Romance authors should realize the power and value of love.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. Romance novels have been gaining popularity since the pandemic.
B. Romance authors will seek something deeper in writing romance.
C. Allison fell in love with The Ripped Bodice.
D. Readers are crowding into bookstores and libraries.

It isn’t unusual that our life is always accompanied by joys, sorrows and other emotions.
36 Thankfully, there are a number of mental health techniques you can use and lifestyle changes you can make to control and overcome these negative feelings.
Breathe in deeply to calm yourself. When your emotions emerge, your breathing will often get out of control as well, fueling your feelings of stress and anxiety. Free yourself from these feelings by taking several deep breaths. 37
Relax your muscles to relieve physical and mental tension. Do a scan of your body and see where you’re holding your stress, then force yourself to relax that area. Stretch your arms, relax your shoulders, and let the tension out of your-legs. 38 Releasing physical tension can go a long way towards cooling yourself.
Place yourself in a calm, safe place. 39 Close your eyes and imagine it, creating as many details as you can, while breathing slowly and evenly. Let out the tension in your body and let the calmness of your safe place quiet your thoughts and emotions.
40 Containing or ignoring your emotions will not make them go away. They will resurface later, so it’s important that you let yourself feel your emotions.

However, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. He did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian knew what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into the backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane.
On the contest day, all the students lined up on the playground. Paul stepped forward first, holding his simple paper airplane. He threw it with all his strength, and it flew a short distance before falling to the ground. One by one, other students tried, but most of their airplanes didn’t go far. When Brian took his turn, he carefully folded his paper again and threw it gently. To everyone’s surprise, his airplane flew smoothly and landed much farther than Paul’s. The students watched in amazement as Brian’s design beat even the strongest throwers.
The whole school cheered as Brian went up to get his prize. Mr. Moose handed Brian a small trophy and said, “This contest isn’t just about throwing. It’s about creativity and learning.” Brian smiled and looked at Paul, who nodded slowly. “Maybe next time,” Paul thought, “I should spend more time folding than relying on my arms.” The other students realized that hard work and thinking could help them win, not just strength. From then on, the school’s art and science classes became more popular because everyone wanted to learn how to make something fly with clever ideas!
