Welcome to WSU Libraries! In this guide, we’ll unlock the mysteries of call numbers and location prefixes. Knowing these helps you quickly locate and access your desired books.
Call Numbers
Books and material are arranged on our shelves according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system. These call numbers uniquely identify and organize items near other material on the same or similar subjects. Consider the call number: LB2395 C65 1991.
LB defines the subject area. The call letters are typically arranged in alphabetical (字母的) order, starting from A and continuing through the alphabet. Knowing the letter(s) for your subject area gives you a place to start browsing the shelves. For example: A — General works; B — Philosophy, Psychology, Religion; D — world History; G — Geography; H— social sciences; J — Political science; K — Law; L— Education; M — Music; N — Arts; P— Language and Literature; Q — science. For more, click here.
2395 is the classification number, which further distinguishes the subject matter. Read as a whole number: 1, 2, 3, 45, 100, 2430.
C65 is the Cutter number and usually represents the author’s last name. Find C, then 65. Read the number as a decimal (小数).
1991 is the year of publication.
Location Prefixes
Some call numbers have a location prefix. Location prefixes mean that the book or material is shelved in a special place, and may have loan restrictions. WSU uses the following prefixes:
Prefix Collection Library Location Loan Period
[Blank] Circulation Collection 2nd floor, 3rd floor, and 4th floor 21-day loan
Ref Reference Collection 1st floor, Reference Area Library-use only
Res Reserve Collection 1st floor, Circulation Area Library-use only
Video Audiovisuals 2nd floor, Learning Resources center Special request
21.Which book maybe identified under the call number “NU238 C719 2013”
A.The ABC of Computer science. B.An Introduction to Modern Art.
C.The Recycling of waste oils. D.A short History of France.
22.What would be the Cutter number if you are looking for a book by Whitney Sherman
A.S53. B.C78. C.W67. D.L59.
23.Where can you find the book “RES AG243 G87 1992”

Virginia “Ginger” Hislop, 105, recently walked the stage at Stanford University to receive her master’s degree in education for the coursework she completed in 1941.
A smiling Hislop rose to an ovation (鼓掌) on June 16 as she received her degree and master’s hood at the university’s Graduate School of Education diploma ceremony while her family, including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cheered her on.
Hislop, a native of Palo Alto, California, earned her bachelor’s degree in education in 1940 from Stanford’s then-School of Education with the plan of earning a master’s degree so she could begin teaching. She was stimulated for an education career by her grandmother, who was a pre-Civil War educator in Kansas, and her aunt, who served as headmaster of a West Los Angeles school. However, her boyfriend at the time, George Hislop, was called to serve in World War II, so the two got married and Virginia Hislop left Stanford after completing her coursework but before handing in her thesis (论文).
Her decision to put obtaining her master’s degree on hold did not pause her commitment to education. Hislop has served on the Yakima School Board of Directors, is a founding board of directors member of Yakima Community College and served for 20 years on the board of Heritage University in Toppenish, Washington. “I think I did good things for our local school system and I helped broaden it out,” she told Stanford University. “For me, this degree is an appreciation of the many years I’ve put in working for the schools in the Yakima area and on different boards.”
“I felt that all the kids should have an opportunity to develop their potential as best they could, and that everybody should have a crack at higher education if they wanted,” Hislop said.

Every runner is unique, and a shoe that works for one might trip up another. Outside of trying on different designs, there’s no quick and easy way to know which shoe best suits a person’s particular running style. MIT engineers are hoping to change that with a new model which integrates a person’s height, weight, and other general dimensions, along with shoe properties such as hardness. With this input, the model then simulates(模拟)a person’s running gait(步法)in a particular shoe.
While the model can accurately simulate changes in a person’s running gait when comparing two very different shoe types, it is quite futile when comparing relatively similar designs, including most commercially available running shoes. For this reason, the researchers believe the current model could just be used as a tool for shoe designers looking to push the boundaries of shoe design.
The team is planning to improve the model, in hopes that consumers can one day use a similar version to pick shoes that fit their personal running style. “We’ ll allow for enough flexibility in the model so that it can be used to understand different individual behaviors,” says Sarah Fay, an MIT researcher. “Way down the road, we imagine that if you send us a video of yourself running, we could 3D print the shoe that's right for you. That would be the moonshot.”
Fay and co-workers drew inspiration from Thomas McMahon, who once used a very simple model to simulate a runner’s essential running dynamics. Using this model, he predicted how fast a person could run on various track surfaces. “McMahon’ s work showed that, even if we don’ t model every single muscle and component of the human body, we still can create valuable insights into how we design for athletic performance,” Fay says. Following McMahon’s lead, the team developed a similar, simplified model of a runner’s dynamics.
28. What do the MIT engineers aim to do
A. Identify the appropriate running style for people.
B. Predict a runner’s performance in running races.
C. Determine suitable running shoes for individuals.
D. Raise the appearance and quality of running shoes.
29. What does the underlined word “futile” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Ineffective. B. Innovative. C. Unnecessary. D. Conservative.
30. What will the team focus on while improving their model
A. Its customization capabilities.
B. Its efficiency in mass production.
C. Its enhancement of shoes’ appearance.
D. Its adaptability to different 3D printers.
31. What does Fay highlight through her words in paragraph 4
A. The significance of comprehensive data collection.
B. The value of simplicity in solving complex problems.
C. The impact of track surfaces on athletic performance.
D. The role of advanced computational models in sports.

The global shipping industry is alone responsible for three percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions(排放)humans produce. If left unaddressed, in a few decades, it will account for over 10 percent of the total man- made emissions.
A new study from MIT researchers reveals a practical solution to this problem. The study authors have developed an emission-free approach to produce hydrogen ( H ) fuel, which generates only water when burned, for commercial ships. They also claim they can make hydrogen fuel using easily accessible resources.
This isn’t the first study proposing the use of aluminum (a silver-gray metal that soda cans are made from) for producing hydrogen fuel. It’s already well known that when aluminum and water react, hydrogen is formed as one of the byproducts. Such chemical reactions, however, come with a sort of a dilemma: It only works when aluminum is used in its pure state. The moment aluminum meets with oxygen, such as in air, its surface immediately forms a protective layer that prevents further reactions.
During their study, the researchers turned recycled soda cans into small aluminum balls. They pretreated the aluminum balls with a rare-metal alloy(合金)that effectively purifies aluminum, making it into a pure form that can react with seawater to generate hydrogen. The salt ions(离子)in the seawater can in turn attract and recover the alloy, which can be reused to generate more hydrogen. The team found that this reaction successfully produced hydrogen gas, though slowly.
They experimented with different chemicals including the ones that are typically found in kitchens and realized that adding coffee made a difference. “A low concentration of caffeine is enough to produce the same amount of hydrogen in just five minutes, compared to two hours without it,” the study authors note. “The next part is to figure out how to use this for trucks, trains, and maybe airplanes,” Aly Kombargi, lead study author, said.
32. How can the MIT researchers contribute to the shipping industry
A. By providing a clean energy source.
B. By developing new fuel storage methods.
C. By improving fuel efficiency in existing ships.
D. By planning more convenient shipping routes
33. What is the challenge when making hydrogen from aluminum
A. Hydrogen is too expensive to make. B. The chemical reaction happens too slow.
C. Aluminum easily reacts with oxygen. D. The metal surface prevents further reactions.
34. What can be inferred about the MIT researchers’ hydrogen generation process
A. It requires large quantities of alloy.
B. It produces significant waste chemicals.
C. It creates hydrogen in a sustainable cycle.
D. It generates hydrogen with low purity.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Hydrogen Fuel: A Game Changer of Transportation
B. Cans+ Seawater+ Coffee: A Greener Shipping Future
C. Coffee: The Secret Substance for Clean Shipping Fuel
D. Aluminum: A Pioneering Material for Hydrogen Produce
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Every spring, hundreds of thousands of birds leave their winter habitat on Lake Poyang in China, and fly north to reach their breeding grounds (繁殖地) in Siberia. 36 Grass-eating birds, like geese, follow fresh, green grass that appears as the season unfolds and the geese move northwards. The period when the young, spring grass is at its most nutritious can last as short as three weeks.
37 Geese can only eat when they arrive in the right place at the right time, but climate change has disturbed when and how long this seasonal food source is available. If birds cannot refuel their energy stores during the long-distance journey, they’ ll risk their ability to breed successfully when they reach their destination.
Fortunately, researchers discovered other food sources on their journey. These birds stopped over in the Northeast China Plain before heading to Siberia. Vast wetlands were once common here, preparing them for the rest of their journey. Nowadays, the loss of wetlands has expanded and most have been used to grow rice, corn and soybeans. 38
In the Northeast China Plain, these birds eat seeds left over after harvesting. Farmland seeds will become more important as natural habitats decline. Mechanized (机械化的) harvests, which tend to leave more seeds in the field, could provide more food for birds. 39 Then the birds can take advantage of both wetland and farmland ecosystems, ensuring their survival.
If healthy wetlands accompany farmland, birds can eat wild plants when farmers sow their crops. 40 Seeing birds as part of the landscape and not as intruders (入侵者) on farmland, can help preserve this biodiversity on the wing.
A. Birds can still find enough food.
B. But the protection of wetlands remains crucial.
C. Some birds can stay over a month in this area.
D. This will reduce their impact on crop production.
E. Such a fine-tuned strategy can become a disadvantage.
F. This forced the birds to use agricultural land as a source of food.
G. These birds must make use of food that is only available seasonally.

I stared curiously at the brown notebook my brother David had handed me. “It was Dad’s,” he explained. Inside the notebook was some paper with Dad’s handwriting on it. Beneath the title—Things I would like to do in my lifetime—was a list of 60 goals.
My heart sank when I saw he’d only checked off five. Dad had died in a car crash 13 years earlier. He’d been hit by an absent-minded driver who’d run a red light. I was 25 then and had never fully processed his death. I missed his incredible sense of humor and curiosity.
The bucket list (遗愿清单) gave me some inspiration: I’m going to finish his list, I pleting his bucket list seemed like the perfect way to celebrate his life.
The first of Dad’s goals I tackled was to “run 16 km straight”. A few kilometers into the 16 km course, my legs were heavy and I was exhausted. Then a voice said: Your life, your choices. It felt like Dad was with me, reminding me it’d been my decision to do this. This pushed me to keep going.
As I continued to achieve Dad’s goals, some made me doubt myself, especially scary ones like skydiving. But it often felt like Dad was urging me on. Standing at the plane’s open door, I was terrified. “Let go,” the voice urged. As I leapt into the sky, I felt a sense of freedom even when I threw up mid-air! I was sure Dad would burst into laughter when seeing that happened! “I survived!” I cried afterwards, thrilled. I jumped from a plane, and ticked off another item on Dad’s bucket list.
The more of Dad’s goals I checked off, the more courageous and carefree I felt. My husband, Steven, noticed my confidence boost. Now for the most challenging of Dad’s goals—drive a race car.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I’d felt anxious behind the wheel ever since Dad’s death.

One possible vision:
Dear Tom,
Thank you for your concern about my participation in the English speech contest held at our school last month. I am glad to share my experience with you.
Out of everyone’s expectations, I won second prize in the competition. It was a rewarding experience, not only because of the award but also for the process of preparation, which greatly improved my public speaking skills. The most valuable part for me was the courage gained from stepping out of my comfort zone. It made me more confident in expressing myself in English.
In a word, I’ll never forget this valuable experience.
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible vision:
I'd felt anxious behind the wheel ever since Dad's death. But I knew I had to do this. I was shaking in panic as I got into the driver's seat, and then I realized Dad would have loved this, pressing the accelerator. I lowered my head, grabbed the wheel tightly and whispered, "Dad, let's go for a ride!" At first, so tense was I that my palms were sweating. But my emotions ran high as I sped up. With that feeling, I felt completely safe driving for the first time in these years. After that, I continued to achieve a series of Dad's goals.
The final item to check off was to "record five songs". Dad loved music, so I picked songs I had fond memories of him singing to me when I was little. I recorded the songs with my husband's help. "Good night, sleep tight," I sang. The instant I finished the last tune, tears of relief welled up in my eyes. After completing Dad's bucket list, I felt a great sense of peace. Dad always knew how to have fun and make the most of life. And now, thanks to him, I've learnt to do the same. Tears ran down my cheeks as I realized that in the process, I had not only honored Dad's memory but also discovered a part of myself that I never knew existed.

W: Welcome to Camber’s Park. I’ll tell you about some amazing things we offer. Camber’s Park offers more than other theme parks. Like them, we have various exciting rides for all ages, but Camber’s Park places especially strong emphasis on the educational experience for its visitors. Although it’s mainly an outdoor experience, we do have some indoor activities if the weather gets terrible.
The park was set up in 1997 by the Camber family but then taken over by the new owners in 2004. Camber’s Park has over forty different rides and exhibits. All but one of these are free once you have paid your entrance fee. We do charge a small fee for our newest ride.
Then, I’ll introduce you to three major rides. Our newest ride is the River Adventure. No amount of protective clothing would make any difference, so only go on this ride if you’re prepared to get wet! Children under eight can go on this ride, but all under sixteen must have an adult with them. Our Jungle Jim Rollercoaster is created for whole family enjoyment. Carriages have comfortable seating for up to eight people, with safety belts which must be worn at all times. Last, we have the Swoop Slide. There are no age or height restrictions. Be careful, though—you must put on long trousers so you won’t get any speed burns! Come and make a day of it at Camber’s Park!
