Years ago, a woman noticed my three boys and asked if they were brothers. When I said yes, she asked, “Oh, they look so different. Are you in the same family ” I knew that she was just trying to make polite small talk, but her question made me uncomfortable.
So proper etiquette (礼仪) for small talk is important. But what are those etiquette rules Here are two examples.
Example 1 Example 2
Scene (场景) “I was born in South Korea and adopted (收养) by my white parents, so I was raised in the US,” says Leo. “But because I look Korean, when I say I’m from the US, people will reply, ‘No, where are you really from ’ It makes me feel like I’m an outsider.” “Talking about weight is almost never that right,” Temple says. In fact, many of the “polite” ways people use to talk about weight are impolite.
What you say “Where are you really from ” “You look great! Have you lost weight ”
What you mean I notice something different about you, and I’m curious (好奇的) about you. You look fantastic, and I am curious about what changed.
What they hear You look or sound different, so you must be an outsider. You have to lose weight to look good.
Solution You can say like this, “It’s so nice to meet you! Tell me a little bit more about yourself.” Say this instead, “You look so happy! What’s new in your life these days ” Just don’t bring up weight at all.
26 How does the writer start the text
A. By asking questions. B. By giving an example.
C. By listing numbers. D. By giving an old saying.
27. What does the underlined word “Solution” mean

C You look like an outsider. D. Could you tell a little more about yourself

A. In science fiction. B. In a storybook. C. In a magazine. D. In a novel.
B
This is interesting to me because I’ve noticed the change in Chinese products over time in Pakistan.
It’s true that during the 1990s, Chinese products were thought of as something of low quality (质量). They were bought by the poor and not expected to last long. I remember they were cheap toys, clothes, etc.
Last month, I was in the market to buy some sheep. While talking with the sheep keeper, I noticed something like a radio around his neck. I asked him what it was. He showed it to me and I was surprised to see that it was a cool music player. There was also a cell casing (电池外壳) on the back. I asked him where he got this and why. His reply was: “I get bored when I take my sheep out to the mountains for feeding. So I got this from the local shop that sells Chinese products. I can keep it charged (充电) using the sun only and have a few cheap cells to keep it going when needed. I can listen to the radio, some songs on the player. This helps me pass the time when I have to feed my sheep.”
But why this player Why not some others
“It’s made in China and cheap enough for me. Another reason is that I couldn’t find anything else that met my needs like this one.”
It’s clear that “made in China” really doesn’t mean what it used to.
31. Where was the writer last month

32. What did the writer want to buy last month
A. A music player. B. Some cells. C. Some sheep. D. A radio.

34. Why did the sheep keeper like the music player
A. Because it could keep more sheep. B. Because it helped make more money.
C. Because it helped feed the sheep. D. Because it helped spend time happily.
35. What does the writer want to tell us according to the passage
A. To tell a story of a Pakistani farmer. B. To introduce the life in Pakistan.
C. To let us know the change in Chinese products. D. To let us know the development of Pakistan.

The Torch (火把) Festival is a traditional festival celebrated among some ethnic minorities (少数民族) in southwestern China, such as the Yi, Bai, and Naxi. It usually falls on the 24th or 25th of the sixth Chinese lunar month, with three days of celebrations. People believe that fire can protect the growth of crops (庄稼). For some groups, it’s a tradition for the old to share farming experience with young people and teach them how to take care of crops.
During the Torch Festival, every family needs to light a torch and hold it to walk on the farm. Big torches are made to appear in all villages. Small torches are simply placed in front of the door of each house. When night falls, the torches are lit and the villages are as bright as in the daytime. It’s really fascinating. People walk around the farm and houses, holding small torches, and then place them in the farm corners. Inside the villages, young people are singing and dancing around the big torches. They don’t come back home until very late.

六、阅读表达

Nowadays online learning has become very popular. We also call it e-learning. For people who don’t have enough time or money to go to classes, it’s an excellent choice.
With e-learning, people have the chance to study in their own time and sometimes for free. They don’t need to sit in the traditional classroom, because they can take classes online. They can hand in their homework through the Internet. E-learning also allows students to learn something new even while they are having classes at school or doing their work.
However, some people think learning at a traditional school is more fun, because the teacher is “live”. Students can talk with their teachers and ask them questions. To take online courses, one also needs to have good IT skills. But not everyone has them, especially for some old people who can’t use computers. Next, in traditional learning, there is a timetable (课程表) students have to follow. This makes study easier for those who can’t plan their own time well. What’s more, students can also get together in study groups to help each other with their work in traditional learning. The discussions among students and between students and teachers are the one main advantage (优点) traditional learning has over online learning.
Which one is better It depends on you. You should know yourself well before choosing either traditional learning or e-learning. Some questions you may need to ask yourself are: Am I good at self-study Do I enjoy working online Do I have good IT skills Do I need a “live” teacher Making a right choice will help you succeed.

How I’ve Changed!
Hello, everyone! How time flies! Three years of junior high school life have brought me great changes.
I used to be short and weak, but now I’m tall and strong. I was once shy and quiet, yet now I’m outgoing and active, making many friends. In study, I used to struggle with English, but I’ve improved a lot by reading more and practicing speaking. For exercise, I didn’t like sports before, but now I often play basketball with classmates after school. These changes let me grow and become more confident.
These changes let me grow. Thanks for this journey!
