Tyler Dison had just finished his night shift (夜班) when a call came across the radio. An apartment near the police station had caught fire and the dispatcher (调度员) reported a 3-year-old child trapped inside.
Though firefighters were on the way, Tyler knew he could get there sooner. And so, the 25-year-old police officer raced to the scene determined to help. “I must save this child at all costs,” he thought.
When Tyler Dison arrived at the apartment building, he saw fire flames shooting out of the windows. The police officer gave no thought to his own safety. Instead, he rushed into the flames.
Rushing into the apartment filled with flames and thick, black smoke. Tyler immediately began searching for the child. The heat was unbearable but the brave officer refused to give up until, at last, he located the child.
Officer Dison raced out with the 3-year-old boy in his arms, taking the child to his police car. The brave hero then drove to meet the ambulance (救护车) halfway so the boy could receive medical attention as quickly as possible.
“If I hadn’t done something, that baby would have died,” Officer Dison explained. “His breathing was very shallow, and he wasn’t really responding.”
Officer Dison got burned in his arm. However, it didn’t matter to Tyler Dison. All he cared about was saving the 3-year-old. And thanks to his courage, the little boy got the help he needed and is going to be just fine.
“I’m so happy that baby is doing OK,” Tyler said. “I grew up in this town, I want to protect it always.”

It was on a grey winter’s day in my parents’ house outside Glasgow that I first suggested Mont Blanc in summer.
After what had happened, I knew I should make more effort to spend time with my 74-year-old dad, but what I was proposing at his age was a risk. A ten-day hike around one of Europe’s highest mountains seemed a little extreme.
“Old age doesn’t come alone,” he replied, implying the aches and pains, arthritic (患关节炎的) hands, and memory loss from a recent life-threatening stroke (中风). He glanced at me with a fatherly look, suggesting he knew better. Now a grandfather, he had spent his best years in the Alps (阿尔卑斯山) — summer after summer, in fact — and to take him along this pathway in search of a route to his past, to stir memory in long-forgotten footprints, seemed like the right thing to do.
We booked a flight, and four months later, arrived in the shadow of Mont Blanc in Chamonix, France.
That first sunlit afternoon, it was instantly obvious that we had made the right decision. The pathway ahead was quiet. On the horizon, stone-faced peaks sat above the plateau (高原), skirted by pine forests and chequerboard fields. Quick-footed hikers walked past us, eyes focused on a ridge (山脊) that marched south to the Italian border. But there was no sign of worry etched on (流露出) my hiking partner’s brow. Only determination.
My dad’s accounts of his time in the mountains remain among the defining stories of my childhood. The first time it left its mark on me was when I flicked through a junk box full of projector slides (投影仪幻灯片) taken in the summer of 1970, when he and two of his friends completed a previously untried route up the notoriously dangerous North Face of the Eiger (艾格峰) in Switzerland.
That was now more than half his lifetime ago. And, yet, here we were, marching side by side around the Mont Blanc massif(山峦), tracing an invisible route with our fingers over the same harsh summits he had conquered long ago. What I had always seen as an obsession with the mountains revealed itself to be a bond that I never knew we had.
By the end of the week, I sensed we may have achieved what we both had thought impossible. We made our final push towards the Col du Brévent above the Chamonix valley. We climbed up into a narrow world of stone, meeting Mont Blanc face on. An ailing (体弱的) Scottish grandpa in good company with the grandfather of the Alps.
To capture the moment, I took a family portrait, but only then did it dawn on me that it was nearly the same composition as on a slide I had first seen in one of those junk boxes. There was that smile, those eyes fixed on the horizon, the beautiful Alpine ridges of Mont Blanc crowding out the background. For a split second, it looked as if nothing had changed.

A.He was a travel enthusiast. B.He was an ambitious hiker.

③the views along the way were beyond their expectations
④it was associated with the author’s childhood memories of his father

A Touching Tale of Love and Second Chances
The Seven Trials of Xingxing is a deeply moving web novel that blends fantasy, emotion, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and child. The story follows Xingxing, a kind-hearted young woman whose life is cut short when she dies heroically while saving others. Struck by her selflessness, the King of the Underworld offers her an extraordinary opportunity — if she can pass seven trials, and if her grieving mother can recognize her in each one, she will be granted a second chance at life.
Xingxing’s mother is devastated by her daughter’s sudden death, clinging to memories of her laughter and warmth. Unbeknownst to her, Xingxing’s spirit is given seven different forms, each time returning to the mortal world to interact with her mother in a new way. The trials are designed to be difficult: Xingxing might appear as a wounded bird seeking shelter, a lost child asking for help, or even a fading voice in a dream. Each encounter is fleeting, and her mother must sense the truth beneath the disguise.
The first few trials are heartbreaking. Xingxing, desperate to be recognized, tries to leave subtle clues — humming a lullaby her mother used to sing, leaving a star-shaped mark (a nod to her name), or speaking in a familiar way. But grief clouds her mother’s perception, and she fails to see the truth. As the trials progress, Xingxing grows weaker, her spirit fading with each failed attempt.
Meanwhile, her mother begins experiencing strange moments of déjà vu — a feeling that Xingxing is still with her. She starts noticing small signs: a warmth in the air when a butterfly lands on her hand, a whisper in the wind that sounds like her daughter’s voice. Yet doubt holds her back.
By the seventh trial, Xingxing is nearly out of time. This time, she appears in a form closest to her true self — a reflection in a rain puddle, a fleeting shadow. Her mother, kneeling in sorrow, suddenly feels an overwhelming presence. She looks up, and in that moment, their eyes meet — not with physical sight, but with the heart.
“Xingxing ” she whispers, tears streaming down her face.
That single word breaks the spell. The King of the Underworld, witnessing this pure love, declares the trial complete. Xingxing is reborn, reunited with her mother in an emotional climax that underscores the novel’s central message: love transcends even death.
This novel is more than just a fantasy — it’s a meditation on grief, hope, and the invisible threads that bind families together. Readers are left with a powerful question: Would we recognize our loved ones if they returned to us in another form
With its blend of magical realism and deep emotional weight, The Seven Trials of Xingxing is a story that stays with you long after the last page. It reminds us that true love is not just seen — it is “felt”.
8.What was the main reason the King of the Underworld gave Xingxing a second chance
A.Because she had unfinished business in the human world.
B.Because he was impressed by her selfless act of saving others.
C.Because her mother begged him to revive her daughter.
D.Because all heroic souls automatically get this opportunity.
9.How did Xingxing try to communicate her identity to her mother during the trials
A.By directly telling her mother who she really was.
B.By using familiar songs and meaningful symbols.
C.By writing messages that only her mother could read.
D.By appearing exactly as she looked before death.
10.What prevented Xingxing’s mother from recognizing her immediately
A.The King of the Underworld actively blocked her perception.
B.The different forms Xingxing took were too extreme to recognize.
C.Her overwhelming grief made it hard to see the truth.
D.Xingxing wasn’t allowed to give any clues about her identity.
11.What is the central message conveyed by the story’s climax
A.That death is not the end of existence.
B.That true love can overcome even death.
C.That mothers have special spiritual powers.
D.That the afterlife operates on a system of trials.

When it had been more than two days since I’d heard from my young adult children — Zoe, 26, and Isaac, 23 — I sent a text to our family chat “Smoke signals, please.”
My request, which the kids have grown used to receiving, was met this time with a reassuring emoji of a puff of (一阵) smoke from my son and a picture of Taco Bell from my daughter.
I know full well that in 21st-century America, I am not the only parent tearing her hair out. Fortunately, my children understand that I need flares shot into the digital night that say “We’re all OK.”
When my husband and I first encountered empty-nest syndrome, all I could do was mope around. But after a while there was also a palpable excitement; we were able once again to live as we pleased, just as we did before we invited our children into our home as penniless strangers who could neither speak our language nor do anything for themselves.
For a while, both generations were busy enjoying unrestricted liberties, which we shared with each other during holidays and family vacations.
COVID-19, of course, changed all that. First Zoe came home from Washington D.C. and ended up working remotely from our living room couch for 14 months while her dad wrote magazine articles on his blue easy chair directly across the carpet. Isaac finished his junior year online behind the closed doors of his childhood bedroom.
I’m sure any New Yorker who stayed in the city remembers the sirens day and night, stores closed, nervous people carefully venturing out, masked and gloved, to find food and supplies.
But weirdly, for our fortunate family, there was some pleasure in our new form of house arrest. Yes, we were stuck together in a small space, Zoe and Isaac really missed their lives and growing independence, and we definitely drove one another crazy. But unlike when these grown-up kids were kid kids living at home, when we all had school and office commitments — I taught in a graduate program in the evenings — we now had family dinner every night. No longer were meals a catch-as-catch-can (逮着什么吃什么) of who was home at whatever time and a hodgepodge (大杂烩) of takeout, pastas and salads.
Now in this compulsory reiteration of our family, my daughter became an accomplished chef. Her dad and I were happy to hand over the reins. My son taught me the world history I’d skipped out on in high school, unwittingly helping me with the book I was attempting to write.
It was a rare privilege for us parents to have that kind of family time again when we’d thought it was completely over. I’d always worried about the hours I missed with my offspring (子女) because of my various jobs. Yes, we were scared about the present and the future, but at least we felt lucky to be with them again.
But now that my two are back out in the world — as they should be! I’m realizing that part of what I felt when they were home was maybe less pleasure than relief. For the first time since they were little, I felt I could keep them safe.
Believe me, I know in real life we can’t protect our kids forever and, in profound ways, we never really could. The reality of what empty-nester 2.0 is all about is a mixture of denial and endless hope. It’s called letting go. I’m trying to.
12.The author sent “Smoke signals, please” in her family chat because ________.
A.she wanted to see digital fireworks
B.she needed to know her children were safe
C.she wanted to know her children’s locations
D.she had important things to discuss with her children
13.The first time the author had empty-nest syndrome, she ________.
A.applied for a graduate program
B.settled into her new self-determined rhythms
C.was busy tracking her children through social platforms
D.suffered from frustration as a result of her lack of control over her children
14.The author said there was some pleasure during their home quarantine (居家隔离) mainly because ________.
A.her children were entirely in charge of housework
B.her desire to keep her children close had been satisfied
C.she got a chance to spend quality time with her grown-up children
D.the family had chances to eat better than before, especially than when her children were still young
15.What was the author’s intention in writing this article
A.To record the precious time with her family during quarantine.
B.To show the negative and positive effects of empty-nest syndrome.
C.To explain why parents need to let go of their worry over their children.
D.To share her own experience of learning to trust her children to take care of themselves.

Having settled in Hotel Courtyard in Bangkok, we explored the city immediately. We went shopping for the whole day and finally we decided to return.
It was at that time that the trouble started. We forgot there are two courtyard hotels in the opposite directions. Absolutely unaware of this, we started searching for the way back. Google maps suggested us the shortest route which was just 20 minutes away by walk. 16
Bangkok felt different after sunset. Walking along the heavily-crowded roads with the dark-red sky felt beautiful. Lost in our talk, we didn’t realize that we passed onto the quieter part of the town.
17 It was closed for redecoration. Unfortunately, nobody around us then spoke English. Worse still, we stepped in a local tuk-tuk (三轮车), which took us to an unknown area for an enormous pay. We had no idea where we were, our mobile phones nearly out of charge.
18 He was a taxi driver. Recounting the day’s events proved to be a great conversation starter. We ended up talking through the way. He was so kind as to offer to drive us around for the rest of our stay. 19 For the next four days, from floating markets to the temples of Wat Pho, our trip wouldn’t have been so trouble-free without him.
Sometimes when everything doesn’t go as planned, I think about the stranger we met on the streets and how a tiny mistake on our part led to unexpected results. 20
A.That was when our hero arrived.
B.Our thankfulness knew no bounds.
C.We reached a completely different Hotel Courtyard.
D.We set off into the city with little research on transport.
E.We decided not to waste our money but our time instead.
F.The trip rings as a reminder that every cloud has a silver lining.
G.He then informed us that our hotel was just a few blocks away.

I spent almost three years in food service doing everything from washing dishes to working as a service director at a country club. Firstly, I waited tables, and it was actually one of my favorite jobs, mostly because of the people. One thing I learned is doing your job right and focusing on ensuring that your customers have the best dining experience.
During college, I worked at a place called O’Malleys. It’s not open anymore so I don’t have to worry about getting anybody in trouble, and besides, this isn’t that kind of story. Every Sunday, these two ladies and a little girl would come in, and nobody wanted to wait on them because they were super cheap and never tipped (给小费), so I volunteered, and they became my regulars. I quickly learned that it was a mom, her young daughter, and her mother. They always ordered the same thing. They’d each get water. The two women would split an entrée (主菜), and the young girl would get something off the child’s menu. And they’d leave no tip. I didn’t really care because Sunday lunch was always busy with the crowd, and their check was so small that even a 20% tip would have been just a few dollars. Besides, they were super nice, and I understood that this was their special time out. Going out just wasn’t something they could do. I did my best to treat them just like everybody else, which they appreciated.
This went on for over a year. Every Sunday, they would come in their pretty dresses, sit in my section, order the same thing they always did, and not leave me a tip… until one day, they did
That day, they came in and ordered iced tea and a soda for the girl, I knew something was up. The two ladies each got their own entree. The little girl got a full order of chicken strips. I’m not sure why I remember exactly what she ordered.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
