Known as the "father of distant wheat hybridization (杂交)", Li Zhensheng devoted (献身) himself to wheat research and made important contributions (贡献) to agricultural science and technology in China. Admitted to Shandong Agricultural College in 1948, he realized early on the importance of science and technology in increasing food production and dreamed of using wheat breeding (培育) to avoid hunger.
Over 23 years of hard work, Li Zhensheng faced many challenges and eventually succeeded in creating a new wheat breed (品种) called "Xiaoyan No. 6" by mixing grass with wheat. This breed has lasting disease resistance, greatly improving wheat production and quality. It became an important parent for other wheats in China.
Li Zhensheng did more than just solve the problem of wheat stripe rust (条锈病); he also proposed a management plan for low-yield fields (低产田) in the Huang-Huai-Hai area. He organized scientists to go into rural areas and helped increase grain production there. Even in his later years, he continued to focus on agricultural development.
Despite winning many awards throughout his life, Li Zhensheng remained humble (谦逊的). He encouraged older keepers to pass on their knowledge and pushed younger breeders to take up challenges. Through his actions, Academician (院士) Li showed that Chinese people can support themselves and inspired the next generation to keep trying. His story teaches us that with big dreams and hard work, great things can be achieved.
