Now students spend their summer vacation doing many kinds of things, but things were different twenty years ago.
In the past, students usually spent their summer vacation helping their parents do housework. There was more than one child in one family, so the older brothers or sisters usually had to take care of the younger brothers or sisters because their parents had to go to work and had no time to look after them. Usually, students had a little homework, so they didn’t have much stress (压力). Some students in the countryside often went to climb the mountains, swam or went fishing with their friends during their summer vacation, but they hardly ever went far away.

Xiamen is in the southeast of China, with over 5 million people living in the city. It has hot summers and short cool winters. Most people think it is enjoyable to live here. Xiamen has a long history and rich culture and its economy (经济) is growing quickly now.
There are many places of interest in Xiamen. One of them is Gulangyu. The island is separated (被分离) from Xiamen by the 600-meter-wide Lujiang River, like a garden on the water. In the small town of Lisse, the Netherlands (荷兰), there is a beautiful flower garden called Keukenhof and it’s the largest flower garden in the world.
The history of Keukenhof goes back to the 1400s. At first, it was part of the castle (城堡) of Countess Jacqueline. She used it to grow fruit and vegetables for use in her kitchen. That’s how Keukenhof got its name. It means “kitchen garden” in English. Then in 1949, a group of tulip (郁金香) lovers decided to have a tulip show in the garden. Then the Keuhenhof flower garden was born. It first opened in 1950. Since then, there has been a tulip show in the garden every spring.
Keukenhof is home to 800 kinds of tulips as well as other flowers. Gardeners grow more than 7,000,000 flowers by hand in autumn. It usually takes them over 3 months to finish the job.
Keukenhof is not open all year round. It is a spring garden, as flowers are only at their best from the middle of March to the middle of May. So if you want to take a trip to Keukenhof, remember to visit it during that time.

Yesterday was fantastic! We went on our end-of-year trip to the theme park. I had to get up so early because the bus picked us up from school at 8 a.m.
Can you believe that Dan nearly missed the bus He was running down the street shouting, and luckily, Mr Andrews, the teacher, saw him and stopped the bus.

Gregg Bleakney’s dream was to travel around America. He got the idea after he finished a long bike ride.
