On Oct 6, during the men’s singles final at the 2024 World Table Tennis China Smash (大满贯) in Beijing, China’s 35-year-old Ma Long lost to his19-year old teammate Lin Shidong. Despite his defeat, Ma said after the match, “I don’t see this as a loss.”
Ma displayed strong resilience throughout the match, taking a 3-1 lead and pushing his younger opponent to the limit. The match was truly a battle between generations. Both players showed great skill and determination, noted Xinhua. Ma is known for his strong defense and quick counterattacks, showing great control and calm decision-making on the court. Ma’s career has been incredible (不可思议的). He joined the national team at15 and won his first world team championship at 18.His journey wasn’t easy between 2009 and 2013, he reached the World Table Tennis Championships (WTTC) semifinals three times but didn’t advance further.
Ma’s determination helped him find his way forward during tough times. He chose to keep fighting, training very hard every day, with his life mostly spent going between his dorm and the training hall.
In 2015, he won his first men’s singles title at the WTTC in Suzhou. In 2016, Ma achieved a Grand Slam after winning gold at the Rio Olympics. A Grand Slam is earned by a player who wins singles crowns (冠军) at the Olympic Games, WTTC, and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITF) World Cup. He won his sixth Olympic gold in 2024, becoming the first Chinese athlete to do so. The ITIF then declared (宣布) him the greatest table tennis player of all time.
At the 2024 WTT China Smash, Ma suggested this might be his last international competition. “I hope people remember not just my victories, but also my love for table tennis and my desire to win,” he said to China news.
