In December 2020, the “quiet carriage” service was first introduced on some trains of the high-speed railway. Up to June 2024, this service has expanded to more than 90 trains.
The “quiet carriages” feature silent videos and announcements made at a low volume (音量). Doors at both ends of the carriage are closed to reduce noise from outside. During the trip, passengers must wear earphones or turn off loudspeakers when using electronic devices. They also need to leave their seats to make or answer calls, and their phones should be set to silent or vibrate mode (振动模式). For those travelling with children, they must take care of them and keep them quiet.
Mr. Li, a Chengdu local, said, “I make at least one round trip a week between Chengdu and Chongqing for work. I sometimes need to focus on my work or get some rest during the hour-long trip. The ‘quiet carriage’ is a good choice for me.”

Many people travel to different places in the world by air. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plane. So airlines offer passengers food. 5
To deal with this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. 6 However, the food itself is not the main reason. According to a scientific research, part of the reason is that at high altitude (海拔) we cannot taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. 7 So our taste buds become senseless. The sad fact, however, is that our noses don’t know it. 8 They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless.
Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.
9 Because they can’t deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure. So making food taste good is still hard for them.
A.Though scientists try their best, things are not as easy as they thought.
B.They would like to do so because they don’t want to lose customers.
C.But it is common that the food taste is considered to be bad.
D.All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad.
E.As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure reduces one third of our taste buds.
Founded in 1971, a social service organization is trying to care for any person in need. It serves 15,000 poor people each year. In the beginning, when its members were unable to fully meet certain people’s needs at work, they often entered into discussions, finding how they could help on their own. When Executive Director Bill Sullivan saw what was happening, he had an idea. He organized a team with workers to show their care. And he called the team “the village”
The team wants to help someone achieve his or her goals (目标) and it wants to do so by having workers give away their own time, money, skills, and anything else they could offer. People who work at the organization are encouraged to care for others. “The cool thing about ‘the village’ is that we believe in our workers and the power (力量) of care that lies within them,” said Sullivan.
“The village” allows people to feel comfortable giving what they can, as all donations are unnamed. “Someone who gives away a car is no more important than the person who sits and listens to someone to let him or her feel loved and cared for,” said Sullivan.
The first person getting help from “the village” was a homeless man. Within just three weeks, “the village” provided him with a car, an apartment and other things. The man said that he had lost all hope before he came across “the village”. It gave him a chance to start over. He wanted to give back by volunteering to help others and make a difference in the community.
“The power of care is clear and has lasting influences — not just on the people who receive donations, but also on those giving away things. It can lead to an understanding of ourselves — who we are, and how important we actually are,” Sullivan said. The power of care is great because it provides a goal — something we all try to achieve within our lives. Many call this love.

In Britain, Australia, Canada and a few other English-speaking countries, people don’t stop celebrating when Christmas Day is over. They also celebrate the following day, known as Boxing Day. It is a popular day for giving additional (额外的) gifts. It has been celebrated for so long, but nobody exactly knows how it started.
Some people believe Boxing Day began in the Middle Ages. In those days, in some special places there were special collection boxes where people threw money for the poor. The days after Christmas the boxes were opened and the money was counted. Then the money was used for helping the poor in the area.
Others believe Boxing Day started about 300 years ago when some rich people had Christmas feasts. They offered lots of food to their guests. Because many servants (仆人) were needed to make and serve the food, they could not celebrate Christmas with their families. To thank them, the rich people would put food into boxes for their servants to take home.
Now Boxing Day has become a public holiday in some countries. Some people spend the day boxing up old or unwanted things and donating (捐赠) them to the poor. Many people are active in helping service organizations (组织) like the Red Cross.

In some places around the world, the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day. In Britain, Australia, Canada and other places, Boxing Day is a national holiday.
There are several thoughts on how the holiday became known as Boxing Day. The most widely held understanding of the origins (起源) of Boxing Day comes from a tradition among rich people. They would give a “Christmas Box” to their servants and other workers. The box would have money and gifts. The AP story says the start of Boxing Day may even date back to the times of the Romans. Roman invaders (入侵者) brought the practice to Britain. The tradition was then taken up by churches (教堂). Churches would put boxes outside their doors to collect money for the poor.
Boxing Day is still celebrated today in many countries around the world. However, the United States is not one of them. But the Christmas holiday, which takes place the day before, is often filled with boxes. Boxes are useful for storing (储存) all kinds of things—especially gifts! It is fun to shake a gift box and try to guess what is inside. But an empty box can be just as much fun. Just ask any child...or any cat, for that matter.
An empty box can lead to imaginative play. It can become anything! It can be a secret house in the forest or a boat on the open sea. That’s because children are masters at “thinking outside the box”. Someone who thinks outside the box is not controlled by rules or tradition. Instead, he or she always thinks about ideas and considers solutions that are creative and unusual.
These are something about Boxing Day. Though plenty of families and businesses still celebrate Boxing Day by helping the less lucky, Boxing Day is now also celebrated with friends and family.

91.What does “thinking outside the box” in Paragraph 4 mean according to the passage
A.A boat on the open sea.
B.A secret house in the forest.
C.Being controlled by rules or tradition.
D.Trying to find out creative solutions.
92.What can we know from the passage
A.Boxing Day is still celebrated in America.
B.Children aren’t interested in any empty box.
C.The origin of Boxing Day comes from poor people.
D.You can also celebrate Boxing Day with your friends and family.
93.Which of the following best shows the structure (结构) of the passage
A.①/②③④⑤
B.①②③④/⑤
C.①/②③④/⑤
D.①②/③/④⑤
94.What would be the best title for the passage
