During the holiday, some students are busy with travelling, camps and all kinds of courses. But a special group of Chinese middle school students decided to experience life outside school.
Twelve students sold vegetables at a local market in a big city together. Within 12 days, they made more than 1,500 yuan.
Among them, the oldest is 21 years old, while the youngest is just 10. They are all cousins in a big family and eight of them are from rural areas.
“Compared with travelling, such social practice makes us learn how tough our parents are,” said Dalin, 18, a senior high graduate (毕业生), to The City Morning Post. Dalin and her 12-year-old brother Xiaolin came up with the idea.
They worked hard to sell their vegetables. Every morning they had to wake up at 3 o’clock. Some of them went to the farmers’ market to buy vegetables. Some of them went to the local market to take up a temporary stall (临时摊位). To lower the cost, they learned to bargain (讲价) with the sellers.
At about 6:30 am, they began to sell vegetables. They peddled (吆喝) loudly to attract customers. After several days, they got some experience, too.
For example, it was better to put vegetables in order and bigger ones on top. If the vegetables were too heavy, they would give customers an extra plastic bag.
After they finally packed up and went home, they had a short meeting. Everyone took notes and shared their feelings.
“We are tired but happy,” said Dalin, “because we gain a lot.”

There’s one thing for certain—we’re all getting older. Our country has entered the aging society in the 21st century. So how to take good care of the old becomes a big social problem we are faced with.
The care homes in London come up with an amazing way to stop old people feeling lonely— giving them hens to look after. It’s also used to help patients with dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Workers in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use. The project is dreamed up by a charity (慈善机构) to reduce loneliness and improve happiness among the old.
Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said, “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. I’m enjoying the creative activity, and it feels great to have done something useful.”
Wendy Wilson, a care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to join the project, said, “People really welcome the idea of the project. We are looking forward to the advantages and fun the project can bring to people here.”
Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said, “We are happy to take part in the project. It will really help bring our people together through a shared interest and creative activities.”
There are now 700 old people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the northeast. And now the charity is working hard to raise money for the project across the country.

Kwanzaa (宽扎节) is a celebration of African American history and culture. It begins on December 26th and continues until New Year’s Day, January 1st.

Kyle, a third grader, wrote this about Kwanzaa, “When we celebrate Kwanzaa, we have many people at home, light the candles, and have a nice dinner. We learn the meaning of Kwanzaa and remember family members. We say something good about them. Last year, we remembered my grandmother.”

The population of the world continues to increase, but in some areas the population is falling. This is true in Europe and especially in Eastern Europe. In Russia, the population is going down by about 100 people EVERY HOUR! Russia’s population could fall by ONE THIRD by the year 2050! And in Poland (波兰) the population is also going down because people are leaving to work in other countries. One of the main reasons is a change of lifestyle. All over Europe people, especially educated women, have a different attitude (态度) to children than their parents. “I have one child and she is enough for me,” said Galina Tereschkova, a doctor from Moscow. “My husband and I both work full-time. We can’t imagine having more than one child.” Many women decide to have children later in life or not to have children at all. “I don’t want to have any children until I have worked for at least 10 years,” said 19-year-old student Hana Markova from Prague. Her opinion is typical of 18~24 year old women everywhere in Europe. In Poland, the population is going down for a different reason. A lot of people, usually aged between 20 and 30, are leaving the country to work abroad. Poland joined the European Union in 2005 and since then more than half a million people have moved to Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy. Even so, the population of those four countries and many other countries in West Europe is also going down. Many governments are now encouraging people to have larger families. In France, women now receive nearly $1,000 a month for a year if they have a third child. Austrian women receive $700 a month for three years when they have their first child.

Aprils Fool’s Day is a celebration that takes place in different countries around the world. It happens on April 1st every year and is a day when many people play all kinds of tricks and jokes on each other. It celebrates lies.

In our daily life, a typical lie for a man is “I did not drink that much” and for a woman is “Nothing is wrong, I’m fine.” It is found that nurses are the most honest people, while sales people and politicians (政客) are the biggest liars (说谎者). The 15th day of the 1st lunar month is the Chinese Lantern Festival, because the first lunar month is called yuan-month. The 15th day is the first night to see a full moon. So the day is also called Yuan Xiao Festival in China.
At this festival, people often watch lanterns, which are in any size and shape you can imagine, from animals to plants and flowers. Lanterns are usually put in trees, or along riverbanks on show. It is said that sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming to ask for help when he was in trouble.
Today, when the lanterns slowly rise into the air, people make wishes.
Another activity is guessing lantern riddles. Young people enjoy guessing the answers to lantern riddles, it gives them a chance to have more fun.
The most important thing is to eat sweet dumplings with different tastes. In northern China, they are called yuanxiao while in southern part they’re named tangyuan, because making sweet dumplings is like a game or an activity, they are usually done happily by a group of friends or family members.
The Lantern Festival also seemed romantic in the old times. Because some young girls in ancient China were not allowed to go out very often except during certain festivals, this festival was a time for unmarried men and women to meet. Watching lanterns at night was just an opportunity for young women to find a man who attracted them. Therefore, for thousands of years, there have been a large number of stories and poems written about these during the Lantern Festival. A line from Xin Qiji, a poet during the Song Dynasty, shows this: Hundreds and thousands of times I searched for her in the crowd. Suddenly I turned, and there she stood, in the dim light.

101.根据汉语提示,本题用 there be 句型表示“有”,全文时态为一般过去时,本句主语是 a supermarket,系动词用 was。 in town “在镇上”。后半句为定语从句,所以结尾不要句号。故填: There was a supermarket in town
102.(D)根据“I cooked some dishes that people often eat in China.” 故填:them;that。
103.根据第一段“However, toa certain degree, the American food was strange to me.” 和“ I really missed Chinese food such as the d umplings , rice and delicious dishes from home.” 可知文中评价食物的形容词是 strange 和 delicious。故填:strange; delicious。
