It takes just a quick glance (一瞥),maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate (评估) you when you meet for the first time.In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about you.The following chart shows you how impressions are made.
Making Impressions People form a first impression in about four minutes. ● First, they notice your eye contact and body language as well as appearance and clothing. ● Then they notice how you speak—your tone (音调),how fast you talk, how loudly you speak, and how you pronounce your words. ● Finally, they listen to what you say.
When People Listen to YouWhat they learn comes from the words you use □What they learn comes from the sound of your voice ■What they learn comes from your body language and facial expressions
With every new meeting, you are evaluated and yet another person's impression of you is formed. These first impressions can be nearly impossible to change, and they often set the tone (基调) for the relationship that follows. So,it's important that you know how to create a great first impression. This article provides some useful tips to help you do this.
Plan ahead.First of all, planning ahead is a necessary thing to do.Whether you're talking in a private room or at a wide hall, the most important thing you can do is to make yourself heard, loud and clear. This can be not easy for an introvert (内向的人)—and for the rest of us.The key:preparation.Feeling prepared will make you relaxed and also improve your confidence.
Making preparations If you're interviewing for a job, take advantage of the Internet to know the information about the company. If you're going on a date, plan some talking points, even if they're just about some favorite TV shows or movies.
Make proper eye contacts with others while listening to others.Good eye contacts mean the other person is reacting to what you are doing or saying. If someone looks at you while you're talking, you probably think the person is smart.
Take a proper posture. Finally,a proper posture can also help in making a good impression.Openness can carry the meaning of confidence. To show self﹣confidence in a meeting, you can sit up straight and leave your arms widely spread at your sides. Holding the posture for just two minutes can lower stress and increase feelings of power.
(1)According to the first chart, what do people pay most of their attention to while listening to you?
(2)What is the reason for making a good first impression?
(3)Why is the text box "Making preparations" mentioned in the passage?
(4)Please complete "______" in the last chart.
(5)Please translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.
(6)After reading the passage, what do you think of your skills of making a good impression? Why do you think so?
7.Would you like to live a better life?If your answer is yes, then you need to make changes to your life right now, even just a small plan for the future.Let's take three students for example.
Jiang Hui,13,Zhejiang I will try my best to be smart in the new year.I didn't do my role well last year.I will also work on my Rubik's cube (魔方) skills.I can do it in two minutes.I will try to do it in less than one minute.
Zhu Yue,13,Shanghai I will work hard to stay healthy in the new year so that I can do well in the P.E.class.
Qi Junyi,13,Beijing I want to lose 10 kg this year!I've made plans:I'll run 5 km every morning, eat healthy food and keep off ice cream.
No matter how old you are,it's never too late to change your life for the better. But do you know how to make changes on both the inside and outside to feel happy?
No matter how much money you make, you can't enjoy your success when you have no interest in what you're doing. So get interested in what you're learning.
Change your schedule (时间表).Remember the time from when you have breakfast to when you go to work or school. If you're going to change your life, you will have to change the things you do every day.
Get out of your comfort zone (舒适圈).Some people would like to stay in the comfort zone.Being comfortable with the everyday life and familiar people and things around them, they won't like to move out.In fact, people need changes to be happy.

5. Each different part of China has its own special forms of traditional art. These usually try to show the things that are important in life, such as love, beauty and family. The most common things, from paper to clay to bamboo, are turned into objects of beauty.
According to Chinese history, sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming. He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble.Today, sky lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper. When the lanterns are lit, they slowly rise into the air like small hot﹣air balloons for all to see. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.
Paper cutting has been around for over 1,500 years.Paper cutting sounds very easy but it can be difficult to do.The paper, usually red,is folded before it is cut with scissors. The most common pictures are flowers, animals, and things about Chinese history.During the Spring Festival, they are put on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.
Chinese clay art is famous because the clay pieces are so small but they look very real. The pieces are usually cute children or lively characters from a Chinese fairy tale or historical story. The pieces are carefully shaped by hand from a very special kind of clay and then allowed to air﹣dry. After drying, they are fired at a very high heat. They are then polished and painted. It takes several weeks to complete everything. These small pieces of clay art show the love that all Chinese people have for life and beauty.

They mainly pay attention to our body language and facial expressions.
(2)What is the reason for making a good first impression?
We should make a good first impression because it influences the relationship that follows.
(3)Why is the text box "Making preparations" mentioned in the passage?
To show how we can plan ahead.
(4)Please complete "______" in the last chart.
Make proper eye contacts
(5)Please translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.
为了在会议中表现出自信,你可以坐直,双臂张开放在身体两侧。
(6)After reading the passage, what do you think of your skills of making a good impression? Why do you think so?
I think my skills are good because I always plan ahead and focus on eye contacts.
【答案】(1)They mainly pay attention to our body language and facial expressions.
